The number who say they are evangelical has fluctuated between a low of 33 percent in 1987 and a high of 47 percent in 1998. But, as Wheaton reports (&lt;a href="http://www.wheaton.edu/isae/defining_evangelicalism.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;http://www.wheaton.edu/isae/defining_evangelica...&lt;/a&gt;) that is probably too high. More accurate estimates are that some 25-30 percent of the population, 70-80 million, are evangelical, and even that estimate doesn't account for the African Americans who are evangelical...
