in Why Passive-Aggressive Twitter Following Is Spam on Social Media Rockstar
Agreed. Abusing the system is abusing, but Twitter has put in place the caps that they think are reasonable. If they don't want me to hit the API 20,000/hour, then they will take away my priviliages to it :)

More on this, Twitter limits your API calls to 100/hour for standard accounts. I've had mine whitelisted to 20,000/hour, which Twitter approved. Hitting the service with 100 API hits/hour does nothing to harm stuff.

I love it. You articulated many of my thoughts better than I could.
One thing however, is that Twitter is a (reasonably) well build system with a strong RESTful API. Scripting doesn't really harm the service too much. No more than using a Twitter client likely does.

These are some really interesting questions, which I've been trying to tackle myself. I'm attempting to organize a panel at the next large Podcamp I attend- hoping to get some group consensus on the questions in a public forum.
Interestingly enough, meeting someone, facebooking them, following them on twitter, and commenting on their blog is probably the perfect example of confusing behavior that puzzles both of us. ;)

Additionally, some people only get large numbers of followers, because people assume that they will be followed back. Let's break this once and for all.

I still don't see how it's a bad thing. Why would CNN or Ashton want to follow back a million people? I don't care if it takes 3 years. If each of those people update 3x/day, and it takes 1 second to read each update, he'd spent the rest of his life reading them and never be able to see it all.
People need to break their ideas that all follows need to be reciprocal. Don't kid yourself into thinking that Ms Spears reads your tweets because she auto-followed everyone back.
The spammers and "entrepreneurs" are the worst thing to happen to Twitter, with the mega celebrities being second in line. What are the authentically contributing to the eco-system? How are they listening?
Hate to be the one to say it, but Twitter was better in 2007. I felt much closer connections then with my 100 followers at the time, than I feel with the 2000 I have now.

in Never be late on rent again in 3 easy steps on Thrive: Good to Grow
My landlord is nice enough (err, watching out for himself enough?) to require that they directly debit the checking account. Works out ok actually for me. With prior landlords I had been always just a few days late paying (never later than the 10th), but I do like the regularity of this. Getting a physical check in the mail is such a pain in the ass compared to this.

I wouldn't have thought listening that I'd learn that much more about photography, as I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, but you got me stumped on several things. I had no idea what the actual ISO standard numbers were, and had no idea how to calculate it.
Rob, what's the gated sounding buzz that I'm hearing on both of the mics (really soft)? Compressor kicking in a bit hard? Otherwise its sounding pretty great.

At first I was like, "AWESOME" then I put in a few titles. $11.00 for Metal Gear Solid 4? Gamestop the other day told me $14.00 for it I think (which I thought was a rip). I'm not sure at those prices how well people will be with this.

in College Tuition - No Sucker Left Behind on Thrive: Good to Grow
As another person with a 100k+ education that I don't feel was worth it, I really want to check out this book. I was always told when I was younger that private universities/colleges offered a LOT more in financial aid, so I didn't worry too much when applying. Yet when I arrived at school, I found it to be anything but the case. My family's deteriorating financial state didn't matter to them. The answer was "MORE LOANS!"
People are bitching about how easy it is to 'accidentally' buy a house and sign up for too much debt. Try being 18 and looking at colleges. Getting those loans is SUPER easy, and everyone at the college will give you super-high estimates of how much money you will make upon graduation. Good numbers are hard to come by. You can sell the house, you can't sell your education.

I think it's great for recent grads to read. If only to understand what happened to them!
But, I was sitting with the book in my hand today, thinking about who I wanted to hand it off to next, and I decided I was going to have to buy a copy for each of the highschools in my hometown. (There's only 3 so it isn't a giant investment).
Basically, I am glad I read it now but I wish someone had given it to me seven years ago. And to my parents too, who generously ransacked they're savings to give me the best.
Ohhh... sooo much guilt!
Glad you're looking into the book! There's a few others out there now worth looking at too. I haven't read them but I think it's great that this topic is getting some momentum!

in AP alleges copyright infringement of Obama image ... - Waiting for the Moon on Oblast
I can't see how they can claim its derivative even. There have probably been a million photos taken over Obama in the past two years (I got 609,875 results on Flickr for 'obama'). It doesn't take ANY value away from the original photo, and only adds value. The original photo is, pretty unoriginal honestly.

in Proof That Twitter Is For Marketing on Jesse Newhart
Good call, but I have to wonder... who are they marketing to, and is it effective?
If such a huge percentage of people on twitter are in marketing/advertising/pr/communications/sales/etc... then are we just really marketing to ourselves?
Notice the relatively few number of billboards on 5th avenue near the advertising firms, but the huge number at Times Square. Marketing to Marketers does little in the end.
I still question the longterm ROI, but would be more than happy to find that its positive, but perhaps not scalable in the short term.

We've seen Dell use Twitter to Market effectively and non-profits as well. As for scalability I'm not so sure social media is built to scale. I see social media's primary advantage going to individuals, who through the use of social media, have a greater opportunity to make their talents known.

in Win $500 Wal-Mart Gift Card! | Frugalous! on Frugalous.com
Tip: Store cards are never a good idea. While some might advertise no-interest, no-payments, its' generally a poor idea to use them. The penalties for forgetting to make that initial payment by even a day result in upwards of 32.99% interest being applied retroactively plus massive fees. These guys love reporting instantly to your credit record too, but only in a negative way.
Comes back to the idea of not spending money that you don't have. Just don't do it, and you'll save a ton for the Holidays.

They really are doing a great job at connecting brand with people, something that 99% of social/web 2.0 tools miss by a few miles (myspace, facebook, etc). I was impressed when I saw this, as I have been with the rest of their advertising recently.

in Geezers rule - why IT never trusts anyone under 30 on mrontemp
I'm honestly not sure what's wrong with Open Source software, or web mashups for use at work. It seems that Accenture has a serious proprietary software/closed IP slant.
Any company or manager that tried to get me to use IE6 as my browser, I'd instantly assume was a moron.
I work in a pretty open workplace however that trust me to 'not be stupid'. I can visit any website I please, download whatever software I like, install games on work computers (its actually pretty much required to play one MMO here) and its all ok. I'm not about to trash my system, expose data, etc. I know what I'm doing, but maybe I'm smarter than most computer users in their 20's.

It really is too bad that it doesn't work like that. Let's face it, there's almost nothing out there to help the consumer, but the government is doing everything in their power to bail out poor decisions by the mega rich.

in Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish + Fail Early, Fail Often on Gauravonomics Diary
I was just trying to explain to a friend the other night that failure wasn't a bad thing at all, and was quite nessacary for a successful person to fail a lot. She responded that she never failed in life except for one thing (which was depressing her), to which I told her that she needed to fail more... as that meant taking more risks and challenges. I sent her along this blog post in hopes that your words are able to articulate it better than I was.

It was great to see you at #pcpgb3! Come to Boston sometime!

I'm not a software engineer, so correct me if I'm wrong... but Twitter goes 'over capacity' and crashes from time to time.
The API calls themselves might not be a strain... but the lookup to send those tweets out to the right 50,000 people+ definitely seems to put a strain on the system. Same as when people constantly friend and unfriend people thousands of times a day to milk the system.
I would arge that if people only followed people they were interested in.... and did less systematic "game following"... Twitter's limited competing resources would be more stable and less prone to overload.
