You're probably right that more people shooting would have created a more hysterical situation. However, we must also consider whether or not this would have happened at all had the gunman known there were many people around him with guns as well.

Think about it...burglars are probably less likely to break into a home if they see a big dog dish on the porch with the name "Maneater" printed on the side. Whether the dog exists or not, they perceive that their chance of success is decreased and are more likely to move along to another house.

It seems like Dr. Paul went into this debate with a definite strategy to hammer home his position on the war and foreign policy. The only problem is that this strategy was probably based on the assumption that he was going to be attacked for his stance (by Guiliani or others) as he was in the second debate and he would be able to create a highlight reel and get some mileage from it.If that was the strategy, it had one flaw--it dependended on the other candidates to go after him. Unfortunately they didn't do that. Whether it was because they realized they had nothing to gain by engaging a second tier candidate or because they were afraid of the public spanking they would get we'll never know, but it's pretty easy to draw the conclusion that the latter would be very damaging.And isn't it odd that they would ask an ordained misister about moral questions but fail to ask a physician about healthcare?Interesting.

I think he can, and I think he will. I think he was trying to bait the other candidates into that discussion because he's so much stronger on foreign policy than they are--stick to your strengths. None of them fell for it.

I was a little worried when I read this post--did some reading up...

This post at The Liberty Papers explains it pretty well.

Basically, it is his job to represent his district, so he forwards requests to committees, then votes against the bills these committees recommend if they include wasteful spending. That way, if the bill passes his district has a chance to get their share of tax money (that they paid) back.

I don't have a problem with this. I think what was written in the WSJ doesn't really tell the whole story. I don't care if he submits idiotic earmarks to committees on behalf of his constituents as long as he argues and votes against them in the subsequent bills.

Until the earmark system is changed, it really isn't possible for him to do his job any other way.

Don't forget the other contributers to the ridiculous licensing rackets--the members of the professions themselves who lobby for legislation requiring licensing to artificially keep the supply low. I have a close relative who is extremely proud of being a licensed barber. It doesn't matter that he does a terrible job, he's licensed. No thanks, I'd rather let the missus cut my hair in the yard.

To me, the greatest benefit of the First Amendment is that it guarantees idiots the ability to make themselves heard. It's easier to sort them out that way. In this case, the dems seem to be paying the price politically. Time will tell.

Excellent article. As you stated, a "one size fits all" approach doesn't fit reading instruction or any other type of instruction. In fact, "one size fits all" is notorious for being an ineffective approach to just about everything.

Ah, labels. I don't think I've ever come across an education blog that deals with education exclusively. They always seem to veer off in one direction or another every now and then.

I talk about education on my personal blog now and then, but I wouldn't call it part of the edublogosphere. Maybe the unedublogsphere?

I guess the "edublogosphere" exists you believe it does, and you're a part of it if you believe you're a part of it.

Seriously, I have a huge problem with sociologists (or anyone else) that thinks they have all the answers for the "best way" to raise a kid--especially when they use phrases like "spirit of the age". Every kid is different.

If nothing else, an attention getter every now and them is a good reminder that sometimes you have to pretend to be good, even if you really aren't.

There are plenty of adults who could use a good ol' fashion whoopin' too.

@Matt basically because it says he doesn't have much more than that to put on his resume. It screams "inexperienced".

I'm not saying that organizing communities isn't a great thing to do. I'm saying that when you list that among your qualifications to President, you'd better be ready for someone to come along and call you inexperienced.

Example--If I had to resort to listing my experience waiting tables to fill up white space on my resume for a professional position in the restaurant industry, I'd better be applying for something entry level, not the CEO of the organization.

Two major factors will hold MySpace back...

1) It's not seen as a tool, but a time-waster by employers. The smart ones are already blocking it.

2) MySpace is played out. It has the image of a place where "I" can go and read about "me"--over and over again. Digg is a legitimate tool.
