It can get about 99% percent cured you'll always have a little bit of anxiety, but it's only a little after getting it fixed the most you can. I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder I have gotten a lot of treatment and it's almost completely gone but i still get a little be of anxiety around certain things.

Hi random hiccuppers! I am one as well. My colleague who sits adjacent to me consistently blesses me when I "hiccup" or as I lovingly refer to them "convulsions." Then, I sneeze, and I get no "bless you." Anyhow, I am a MALE, and I have these too!

It can be an embarassing situation as I am a trainer for major oil and gas companies, and I get very odd looks when I do this in front of a client. I hope we get some REAL answers soon! Does anyone even know what type of doctor MAY have the answers?

That's the saddest story I ever read, you cannot possibly have ever known Christ, as I know He would not let you go that easily. I will take you up on only one point of you story. Think about this: If fundamentalist Christians altered Josephus's work then they must have found every copy in the world and changed them, as there is not one older copy of his book in existence that does not mention Jesus. To be so easily shot down by satan I believe, lies in the fact that you have never been convicted of your sins. Sins separate all men from God, hence, the call to "repent and be baptised". Try one last prayer, plead with the Lord 'to reveal the sinful state of your heart’ because until you have been convicted of your sins, repent and turn away from those sins - regardless of the cost, you can never get to know the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ died for you sins; hence, only truly repentant sinners can come into fellowship with Him. Please do not die in your current spiritual state - eternity is a long time to spend in hell.

I read your story, wow I can't amagine what you have gone through. I am a christian and although I agree with what some of the christians said, I don't think what you need or want is for someone to argue you back in the kingdom. But I am confused why christians would try to argue with you instead of first apologizing on behalf of christians for the way you were treated in the church. I am sorry that people decided to destroy you instead of building you up.
I hope someday that you realize that christians are not always the best representatives of Jesus.
I am glad that you are exploring different religions and I encourage you in gain more knowledge, which is never wrong.
I hope someday you restore your relationship with Jesus and you experiences will help you to be the follower of God that you wish you witnessed when you were younger. I'll be praying for you.

Wow, lots of opinions here. I have to say that I find a little agreement with all of the statements made. The one that really had me thinking though is from Emily. I guess I never thought about children being more comfortable with women. Now does that apply to boys as well as girls? I do not have the answer, but I think it may be different for each. As a small boy, I do not remember being any more comfortable with any particular gender of stranger. But that is me and my fading memory.

While Emily's comment has me thinking, I do not fully agree that we should or need to get into the comfort of the passenger too much, whether child or not. Where does it stop? Can I say that I do not want to be seated next to an overweight person because I do not feel comfortable? We've already delved into the racial implications...

Maybe it has to do with the parents raising children correctly and not to fear men. I think that is one of the major points in this whole issue. Making generalizations is very EASY (and lazy) but extremely dangerous. It may be more difficult to teach a child to trust most people and be cautious of others based on certain criteria (what criteria is another debate entirely), but it should be done. Singling out ~50% of the population is a weak and uninformed method with far reaching implications on the future development of the children in the world.

Well, word on the street used to be Brazil being the favorite. But if you go by their mediocre performances throughout the tournament, except for flashes of brilliance during the Japan match, I don't see how you can seriously view them as favorites. You're right, though, they ain't gonna win the Cup.

I wouldn't be too sure of Germany winning against Argentina. The Albicelestes are on a role as well and their bench is incredible and more than a little daunting, especially when they're putting in goal magnets like Tevez and Messi into the game during the second half. And Germany has, so far, not played anyone well matched to them.

Should be a great match on Friday, but it's going to be Argentina all the way.

I believe the problem is the congregational model. Most churches won't grow past a few hundred, but any church with more than a few dozen people find themselves working very hard to put on a show every week. This is not necessarily unbiblical, but it is certainly not prescribed in the Bible. We spend a LOT of resources to build big buildings and put on large productions, when those are NOT required to fulfill our calling.

The NT church consisted of home-based meetings, with *occasional* city-wide meetings. Both were primarily for believers. Our calling is not to be hip or do things that unbelievers can necessarily be impressed by, but to simply disciple believers and live life according to The Way. This points people to Jesus, not to megachurches with superstar bands and pastors.

The basic question you're asking is assuming that a church has the resources with which to address musical style to begin with. Size (or a lack of it) is an important part of the question.

In terms of musical style, I absolutely believe that the choice of musical style is very much like the choice of language. I've talked about that on my blog quite a bit, actually. Choosing to do a particular musical style just because the believers in your midst prefer it that way would be like speaking in a foreign language.

The problem is, choosing between Spanish and English is quite unlike choosing between a guy with an acoustic guitar and a rock band with a sound system and light show that would rival any popular act in the middle of their tour. There's a huge balancing act do deal with there. It takes a lot of work to find the right balance.

The issues surrounding trying to be relevant to unbelievers is quite simply a by-product of the congregational model, whether large or small, where the objective is to create an effective presentation. My point is, what if we aren't even supposed to be worried about it?

I really like what Jeff said. I've seen some of the exact same issues.

Given the presentational style of worship we're all used to, we have to "pick" a style for the entire body of believers, and people either have to like it or tolerate it. Kind of like preaching - you either like the style of preaching, you tolerate it, or you find another church.

A church gathering should be an atmosphere where all are encouraged to participate (in an orderly fashion). If you have musicians in your midst, they should have the opportunity to be involved. That way, your church remains "relevant" as young musicians get involved and bring in new expressions of worship.

In a presentational style of worship, this is simply not possible.

That's why lately I've been questioning the basic assumptions of a presentational approach to ministry and worship.

When we put so much emphasis on programs, large gatherings, and high-quality productions, it will add "to the already overwhelming pace of people's lives," especially when those people are volunteers. One inevitably leads to the other.

One of the reasons why I'm enjoying my transition from presentational worship into house church is that is simply removes all of that. When I lead worship for house church, I do spend some time preparing. But it's an entirely different level of preparation. I'm not coordinating multiple musicians, sound and video engineers, setting my equipment up, getting the stage cleaned up, etc.

The main difference is that instead of hoping to utilize a high quality production to impress and attract people to the gospel, you rely on the gospel itself, manifested through the love we show to one another as well as our compassion on unbelievers. So the pressure to perform is completely removed.

I've heard Andy speak a few times (the past several years at Catalyst, as well as a time or two at NP) and read a couple of his books. I wouldn't expect him to hold back on the challenging parts of the gospel. Still, the description of the gospel as "easy and accessible" just doesn't sit right with me.

In response:

1) I'm not suggesting what we should make it hard to be a follower of Christ, I'm suggesting that it is a huge challenge, and to describe it as "easy" is misleading. It certainly has it's rewards and benefits, but not without a world of personal sacrifice. I wouldn't describe that as easy.

2) This isn't a question of behavior. It's a question of how are we going to attract people to the gospel? To tell someone that it's "easy" to follow Christ is, as I said, misleading.

3) I'd respond by saying that he also called everyone to take up their cross daily, and follow him. He said that we had to forsake our friends and family in order to follow him. He told a rich guy to sell all he had, give it to the poor, and then he could follow him. That kind of stuff is pretty darn tough. It's easy to quote one verse and talk about how "easy" the gospel is, but in order to do so, we have to ignore a dozen others.

4) I don't think the ideas of being "born again" and "becoming like little children" are easy. I think those are pretty tough challenges, actually. Would you say it's easy to take on the mind of a little child in your approach to the father?

I think the bigger issue is this - what does the church do that makes it unintentionally more difficult? You mentioned this as well, which is good. I think on the whole, we tend to get in the way of people coming to Christ, even when we try to do strategic (sorry) things in order to attract people to the gospel. It's not rocket science to follow the gospel - it's pretty straightforward, but that doesn't make it easy. It's extremely challenging.

We don't need more slick marketing campaigns, better buildings, lighting, bands, or better speakers to attract people to Christ. We simply need less of us, and more of Him. When we lower ourselves, so that it is His glory that is being revealed and not our own, then people will be attracted to the gospel. But the more we try to use our methods, the more we show off our own glory instead of simply trying to reveal His.

Choosing to follow the Christ is one of the most difficult and important decisions someone can make. We shouldn't trivialize it by describing it as "easy and accessible."

But overall, if you believe that the church is supposed to be more of an organism (something created by God) that it is an organization (something created by man), then hearing someone consistently talking about "systems" regarding the church is just plain weird.

Organizational systems are designed by man for control. Organic systems are designed by God for life. Organizational systems *always* resist the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit works organically, not organizationally.

Rick, man cannot design, create, and control organic systems. Organic systems are created by God. If you look at the language Andy Stanley used (and often uses at leadership seminars), it's primarily about organizational systems. He even uses the term "your organization" when referring to leadership issues.

The reality is, the modern church is about 90% organization and about 10% organism. It should be the other way around.

Overall, church attendance is on the decline in this country. Why is that? While we're celebrating the relative success of some churches, we're losing a country. If we're not willing to analyze our every assumption about the way we approach ministry, then we just might lose it all. You can point to churches that have grown into the thousands or even tens of thousands. We can also look into other countries, where they adopt a more organic approach, and find churches that have grown into the hundreds of thousands and even into the millions.

I'm as impressed as anybody about the impact North Point has had. Still, I think our very foundational ideas about church limit what God is able to do through us. I think organization vs. organism is one of those foundational issues.

It's not a challenge when your church *is* a "home church/group experience". I've grown more in the last six months having participated exclusively in a house church, than I have in the last six years leading worship at a conventional church.

The only frustrating thing for me, personally, is that I love playing in a band, and I miss doing that every week. But that's hardly a reason to make that my primary means of spiritual development.

Have you read Barna's "Revolution"? It describes is great detail his research that supports the statement you quoted. Fantastic book.

Chris, in what way do you think Barna takes it too far? While he definitely supports, on a personal level, what he talks about in Revolution, he's more describing something that's already taking place than he is laying out a specific idea for everyone to try. It just struck me as odd that you said "his 'vision'" when all he's really doing is describing a significant trend, and agreeing with it.

Wow. If that's your mental model of a house church, then you need to meet some people who attend one.

Granted, some house churches are formed out of pure bitterness and isolation, and house churches are just as prone to sitting on their thumbs as any conventional church is.

But the reality is this - if Jesus had intended for us to launch groups of thousands, with a single "pastor" at the top - he would have started the first one himself.

Yes, he preached to thousands, on occasion, at least. Yet the gospels speak of how he would do his best to escape those crowds. How he chose twelve specific people to pour his heart into them, and then told them (via the great commission) to do the same.

If the very Son of God chose "quality" over "quantity," who am I to second guess him?

If Jesus had millions of dollars, he wouldn't be building church buildings (large or small). If Jesus had thousands of followers, he'd be picking twelve of them and concentrating on those. If Jesus had to choose how to spend his time, he'd be spending it with people instead of preparing all week long for a large weekly event. At least, that's what I'm finding in the Bible I've been reading.

I'm certainly not going to say that transformation can't happen in a conventional church, of any size. But when it comes to discipleship, you simply can't argue that larger is better. I'd argue that true discipleship doesn't even occur on a level of 12-20 (a typical small group or house church size) but more on a level of 2-3.

I agree with Anne, that God will use a variety of formats, structures, and methods to bring people into the one saving truth of Christ.

However, the truth is, that all successful churches utilize the small group format to one degree or another, whether it is a conventional church with small groups, cell churches, or house churches. Conventional churches struggle with how to get people plugged into a small group program. Cell churches do a better job, but they will still have people who won't commit to the cell group. But in house church, the small group is the church, so it's not a struggle.

When I invite someone to my church, I am inviting people to a meeting that is designed, at it's core, to provide "relational connection" as "the key ingredient" (Tony's words), and not "just inviting people to show up for an event at the church" (again, Tony's words).

The issue of relational connection is one of the main issues that led us to join a house church rather than to seek out another conventional church. It is the exact issue I've been struggling with for years - how do we design a weekly meeting that has a relational element to it? The answer, for me, was to drop the presentational stuff (which was hard for me to do) and focus on relationships as a regular course of being the church. It is much easier to tack "events" on to a weekly relational meeting than it is to tack on "small groups" to a weekly event.

Finally, and this is important, there are a number of people I've come into contact with in the past six months who have had extremely bad experiences with churches in the past - experiences that border on cult issues - and therefore they have a hard time trusting ANY church at all. Yet these people feel very comfortable to the idea of a church that meets in someone's home, where one person is not in charge directing every aspect of the meeting. Perry, if your concern is that house churches can't reach everybody, you should understand that conventional churches can't, either, and there are definitely people in this world who would never find Christ in a large conventional church, but they will find it in the loving relationships in a house church.

Um, I'd love to see some kind of Bible reference that indicates that Christians are supposed to be "independent" and "feed themselves." Because I'm pretty sure there aren't any.

We're supposed to be interdependent. Jesus used phrases like "feed my sheep" and "love one another." The last shall be first. He taught them that service to each other was the most important thing. We're not talking about reaching the lost here, we're talking about within the community of believers.

Yes, that does mean that people need to step up and help out. But the biggest thing is that they need to participate in real relationships with each other, something more than just small groups or even a weekly house church meeting.

When we use words like "independent" we make it sound like we're on our own. We were never meant to grow spiritually while isolated from everyone else. We were meant to edify each other, confess our sins to each other, pray for each other, love each other, teach each other, and depend on each other. Perhaps the biggest reason I left the conventional church setting is because it's nearly impossible to accomplish those key elements of church in a non-participatory setting.

If we can get that figured out, whether in a conventional or house church setting, then "helping the church introduce more people to Christ" will happen as a result of the love they see in us.

That verse immediately sprang into my mind when reading this.

It's not about the greatest message, the greatest communicators, or the greatest venues.

It's not about communicating louder, or clearer, or more relevantly, or more intellectually, or with more pizazz.

People will only stop to listen to the message - and will only be able to truly understand the message - when they see it in the context of love. Our love for each other. And our willingness to love them.

But what does it mean when our churches look nothing like the churches described in the NT? What does it mean when we do not allow the Spirit to guide our gatherings?

It's one thing to say someone is wrong. It's another thing to point out that modern churches don't look like what is described in the NT.

One of the awesome things about the Word of God being accessible to everyone, as opposed to the thousands of years when the Catholic church restricted it to clergy alone (by not allowing it to be translated into common languages), is that anyone can read what is described in the NT and compare it to the church as it stands in their time. This is what Luther and others did during the reformation, noticing a huge gap between the church's theology and what is described in the NT. This is what others are doing today, looking more at structure and practice (which was not significantly altered during the reformation!). I would encourage anyone to read specifically what the NT says about church meetings and practice and compare. Ask the question why we're not more like that. You'll find that few people want to engage in that discussion.

The biggest differences to me are that we have maintained a huge emphasis on clergy vs. laity, and we continue to restrict participation in church gatherings to the "professionals." Paul clearly describes a different approach, where the purpose of the church gathering is mutual edification, where believers are led by the Spirit to participate.

There's more to it than just that, of course, but I think that's one of the more visible differences, and probably one of the central issues. I've been writing a lot about this stuff, on my blog, that you can scrutinize. (And I actually encourage it - I could use the scrutiny!)

Like I said earlier, there's a difference between people criticizing churches because it differs from their experience (e.g "God hates rock music!") and comparing modern church to the scripture (e.g. by pointing out that the clergy/laity division undermines the priesthood of all believers). The former are just complaining. God corrected Israel through the prophets, who were rarely listened to. Today, we've banished prophets and apostles, by claiming they no longer exist (though there is no scriptural support for this).

I guess I'm saying that if God is going to reign the modern church in, He's going to do it through prophets and apostles, and you can be sure that they will not fit the mold of what the modern-day church expects them to look like. And you can be sure that most people will not be willing to listen.

Whatever you think of how they criticize the modern church (this is not new to either of them, and I'd be surprised if you expected anything different), both of these statements are absolutely true.

When we look at how similar "churched" Christians are to the rest of culture - by and large, as materialistic and self-centered as the "unchurched" - we need to be looking in more detail at our practices and methodology. The fact that many of our practices have pagan roots SHOULD trouble us. There's a reason why every religion in the world relies on some form of clergy/priests presenting truth in a ritualistic, presentational format. It is a method of control. There is also a good reason why this methodology was absent from the New Testament church.

Sometimes God establishes things a particular way for a reason. If it's criticism to suggest that we should work back towards the way the church was established, then I'm certainly a critic.

The best point I've read on this topic for years is by Wolfgang Simson, in "Houses that Change the World," where he says this:

"If it was possible for the very essence of the gospel - salvation by faith, justification by grace - to be buried under the sand of history, what about the rest? If we can gravely err in the very key and core issues, could we also have erred in other, lesser issues? The fact that the Bible was again given into the hands of common people started what I call the history of rediscovery: it was the turning point where the church started to climb again out of darkness, escape its own structural prison and rediscover, step by step, long-forgotten truth and long-forgotten practices, including the house church as an organic form of church."

Lest you get the wrong idea, Simson is as much a critic as Viola. But this is one of the statements that convinced me that house church proponents had a huge point.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to this book (been on order for a few months now).

I used to have it in my head that a stepping stone would be appropriate. But every house church (or cell church) expert I've ever read has said specifically that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible to make the transition. Some shifts are too large to cut into smaller chunks.

I've heard of groups that do that kind of thing and guess who criticizes them the most? "Traditional" Christians.

Nevertheless, we *should* look at Acts 4:32-35. And it is primarily focused on *sharing*. Which happens little amongst members of a traditional American church. We're too busy being good little credit-driven consumers and keeping up with the Jones'! I don't think a direct reading of that passage requires us to sell everything and live in communes. It just requires us to be more anti-consumeristic, focused more on others' needs than our own desires, and having a commitment to live well underneath our means. But I think that committing millions of dollars to building projects runs directly against all of that.

Actually, there's a huge chunk of that history that we SHOULD throw away. Worship of Mary (431)? The "pontifex maximus" (big bridgebuilder) (607)? Worship of images and relics (786)? Holy water (850)? Celibacy (1079)? Indulgences (1190)? Transubstantiation (1215)? Bible forbidden to laymen (1229)? Purgatory (1439)? Then the culmination of the clergy-dominated system - declaring beliefs like this to have equal authority with Scripture (1545).

That just a small, partial list. Guess what it all started with? The banning of house churches in 380. That's 1200 years of history we SHOULD just throw away. Including the basilica/cathedral style worship, which was developed not using New Testament theology, but by co-opting what was common in every other religion in the world (including Jewish and pagan systems).

In another book, Viola says "the Reformation recovered the truth of the priesthood of all believers. But it failed to restore the necessary practices that embody this teaching." Practices described in the New Testament. Practices that the house church movement are restoring, and that the traditional church is resisting because its practices are, for the most part, incompatible with those described in the New Testament.

Luther, Calvin, etc. got a bad reaction from the traditional church because they took a look at scripture and noticed that the theology of the church looked nothing like the theology in scripture. The house church movement gets a bad reaction because they're looking at scripture and noticing that the principles, practices, and methods of the church looks nothing like those in scripture.

This cracks me up. The passive spectator mentality is a byproduct of the presentational style of worship/teaching, and then you say house church can't work? One of the reasons I've been drawn to house church is because of it works against people's tendencies to be docile. We've had people leave our house church because they just wanted to sit in a pew and "be fed." That's exactly the kind of damage Viola speaks of.

The Bible gives an example of what Jesus' hand-picked followers started, being led by the Holy Spirit. These were the guys who developed our very theology. Who were performing miracles. I think we should take their suggestions regarding the methods and practices of the church a little more seriously.

If we claim that their methods and practices were culture-specific, it is only a small step to say that their theological implementation was culture-specific as well. This is the step that many Christians take today with a liberal theology. Claiming that there is no such thing as hell, for instance. We can't claim that the theology is immovable while also claiming that the methods and practices are entirely relative.

Anyone can move multitudes. The question is, what are they being saved into? Does what they are being saved into look anything like the relational church described in the New Testament, where all believers contributed to the gatherings, lived simply, shared with each other, and were led by the Holy Spirit in an organic, functional way as the body of Christ, not as members of an organization?

This is what the house movement is about. It's a lot more than just the location. Even comparisons to the New Testament church don't matter to you, then I can understand why Barna and Viola sound nuts. But I've begun to take the New Testament a lot more seriously, so they make a heck of a lot of sense to me.

Nick, I've never said "identical" and none of the house church proponents I've ever read or talked would say "identical." That's not the point.

The point is that the implementation is always part of the message. If I'm telling people that part of their job is to take care of widows and orphans (which in our culture would also reflect other global poverty issues), yet I'm spending most of my personal money on all the latest fads and condoning the church spending money on elaborate buildings, presentation systems and programs to server the church members, doesn't that completely undermine my message?

When Paul talks about each person having an opportunity to speak in a church gathering, and our worship services are limited to two or three people ever having an opportunity to share, shouldn't that make us question our current methods?

When the Bible never speaks about utilizing a church "building," and we have churches all across America spending tens of millions of dollars each (or more) on buildings, shouldn't that make us question our current methods?

When churches are building these buildings instead of using resources to help those in need, shouldn't that make us question our current methods?

When the Bible speaks very strongly against a clergy/laity division, never mentions a professional approach to ministry, and never condones the payment of church leaders, shouldn't that make us question our current methods? (1 Timothy 5:17 refers to *honor*, not payment. How a translation translates this verse is now one of my tests of a good translation.)

When the Bible speaks of the church confessing sins to each other, praying for each other, taking care of each other, and most Christians in most churches barely even know each others' names, shouldn't that make us question our current methods?

Our gatherings, relationships, leadership style, location, and use of resources are as far away from NT descriptions as you can image. Anyone giving a good objective look at the NT church, and then looking at modern church organizations, can see that. Especially unbelievers.

I'm not sure how much freedom Christ gives us in the implementation of His church. I think we have some freedom within the descriptions that the NT has given us, but the current modern church is very far outside of those descriptions.

And in reality, I have experienced more freedom outside of the modern church than I ever experienced inside of it. It is the fullness of Christ that I am seeking, and I believe that this is based much more on my obedience to Scripture than my ability to be strategic and innovative. I wish it were based more on the latter - I'm better at it! But strategy and innovation only make sense when you're staying true to Scripture - not just in theology, but in practice also.

Yep, Dothan. Been there a million times. Part of the trek of anyone going from the Atlanta area to Panama City Beach. Every time we make that trip, we see probably 50% of the license plates being from the metro Atlanta area.

They just need a bigger sign above that mess saying "TO PANAMA CITY" when you're heading south and another that says "TO ATLANTA" when you're heading north. Though if you want to eat at Cracker Barrel, you have to take one of the other "North" options to get there. Sometimes it pays off to try an alternate.

This is a bad idea. Riding a bike across your lawn three or four times every week would totally ruin it. A gas mower doesn't have 180 lbs sitting on top of it, and the weight of it is more evenly distributed because there are four wheels. And a reel mower doesn't weigh much at all compared to either.

As far as the question goes.... I watched this game from my phone and although i didnt have the privy of seeing Gardy's throw, Sabathia getting that hot hitter in Hill to ground to A-Rod at the end of that inning was undoubtedly the play of the game IMO...

I dreaded refreshing the page to see what happened in that situation and knew the game hung in the balance right there... even a bloop single puts a bat in the hands of an even hotter Rolen and things couldve got ugly not only for CC, but for Girardi for leaving him in. Not to mention comin back home 2 games under...

Of course who knows if Matsui sees that weak slider at knees the next frame or who even pitches that inning.... Great, GREAT job by CC. My nod goes to him.

Ya know, I have reason to think that the still upstanding old stadium may be affecting the winds in the new stadium.

When you drive by on the Deegan, the old stadium stands out in front of the new one, so wind gets pushed from the front side of the new stadium and then creeps over the wall of the new one, further pushed over and into right field because of the new slope of the concourses... Im no physicist... but it sortof makes sense considering the winds that fly over the river from the heights and down towards that area of the Bronx.

Maybe it will calm down once that building gets demo'd. Its possible...

And Id even throw in Joba as an omsbudsman of sorts for the younger players to have someone to reach out to without fear of being shouted down.

There may be better candidates than Joba for that, but if youre gonna appoint anyone, might as well be the ONLY young guy you KNOW isnt going anywhere.

I have a strong conviction that Joba and A.J.'s innings will be the two most interesting office pools of '09. Thinking of setting one up for both.. My guesses? 140 for Joba, 160 for AJ, and Alfredo Aceves will log in over 125 due to assorted injuries as a wild card.

As for the Torre controversy, since I havent had a chance to weigh in... I think its just smart book selling... the more we delve into the actual words that were said, third person or not, none of the things he said have been news.. and I dont see it as having that much of a negative impact on his relationship with the team, its players or the possibility of him ever coming back for an old timers day or something to that effect.

If he didnt bad mouth Randy Levine, then you know he doesnt want to completely burn his bridge with the Yankees, cause if he did have a vendetta, thatd be the first place he should have and would have gone.

Classic case of striking while the iron is hot. Swisher has put up good numbers in his career, except last season. To deal him only for Marquez is a steal. I still think they can go after Tex here.

Oddly enough, I like the Jets, never had a problem with them, even though weve had some really historic games both on the winning and losing end against gang green. But Buffalo and New England boil my blood far more than the Jets ever could.

Thats it! Im callin Michael Kay tomorrow and asking why they arent playing Molina more often and why cant Matsui be brought up to 5th, I think A-Rod n Giambi being split up will help the both of them greatly. Lets see if I can stir some insight.

Molina has been getting Luis Sojo-type hits with guys on base this year. He's prob been the anti-A-Rod this year, and ONLY hits in big spots. Whats the worst that can happen, he can ask joe about it, or use it as in-game insight, either would be great.

Wells coming off the DL has looked more like the Vernon Wells we know, and the words "bases-clearing double" usually pops in my head when I think of the hurt hes put on us over the years.

Matt Stairs I kinda like, guy just wont leave, hes a solid 240 lbs of bacon egg n cheese and he has incredible pop. He can bat anywhere in a lineup too, remarkably, and I wouldnt be surprised to see a 2 run shot hit the restaurant sometime this weekend.

Im not sold that the Rays can run away with the east either, after the mets last year anythings possible in september, but the most anticipating thing is going to be that final 3 game set vs. boston to finish off the season. Unfortunately Bostons only out of division opponents in september is cleveland, and they fare very well against the jays and O's, something we havent done this year.

So if were gonna build on getting some of these games back, theyre gonna have to be done before the calendar flips. Its gonna be a longgggg september.

That double play last night ruined everything for me. John Sterling repeated the fact that the ONLY way the yankees couldnt score Cano from third after sexson walked and pudge popped out was if melky bounced into a dp, he said it THREE times before melky saw the first pitch. He didnt even finish saying it the third time when Melky swung at the first pitch to a tailor made DP and he laughed in dismay as soon as the ball was hit, speedily saying 'onto second onto first double play'.

Although Torii Hunter has really gone nuts since the death of his grandmother two weeks ago(we didnt see him much cause of the funeral), Anderson continues to crack gap shot doubles right when we really dont need him to.

Anderson also makes me hate that Bernie Williams isnt still playing baseball, since he keeps jutting out there and putting up numbers despite everyone saying hes finished year after year.

Called the Michael Kay show today to welcome him back(I try to get in once a week, fun to do while im drivin the van for work) and talk about Aceves, since I knew Rasner starting today would prompt starting pitching trade talks.

I told him he was a 25 yr old gem we snatched from the Mexican League and he's mowed down the opposition on all levels in the minors thus far and is currently being stretched out so he can finish the year strong, and suggested at first folley from Razz he should be called up, as opposed to a trade.

Kay agreed that Cash was very high on him and is doing everything in his power to solve our problems from within, and thanked me for introducing the idea to the public since no one knows the guys name yet and then talked about who he was n where he came from.

So according to Peter Abraham, Cash was at the Scranton game watching Aceves. I think were all on the same page now. Thanks again for the minor league coverage, it makes convos like these easy to have, feel better.

Perhaps they should do the opposite... DH him in this series and let him get his rest in pittsburgh, maybe playing him once in the final game in Left, to give his knee ample time. Not sure having him rest now then play 2 games in left field would be proactive to his health. But im no doctor, haha.

Oh he definately was, he hadnt pitched in 4 days, and he ran out of excuses why NOT to use him in that spot without saying its not his anymore, so you know he was going to... Youre right. Frightening. But as Michael Kay always says, you cant determine those same pitches would be thrown or the approach would be the same, but I have a feeling he woulda hung that one for the youngster no matter what.

I agree with these gentlemen on their sentiment, that Hank is wrong for dissing the pitchers batting. And I do think there is a place for the pitcher to be batting in some minor leagues, even though it may increase injury risk to developing talent, not training these players on all aspects of the game(as we've seen here) can prove disasterous as well.

I obviously dont agree with the DH being an "abomination", but do see that since the meth/roid era has drawn to a close the DHs of the world today are broken old men who hold the DH as their last thread of hope. Except with the Yankees, and other well forged squads who simply just have the nice problem of too much talented personnel.

There has to be a happy medium somewhere...

The real test here is how to get our three hottest hitters: Damon, Matsui, and Giambi, all of their atbats in all of these national league parks...

I wouldnt mind sitting Melky and throwing Damon in center, but if anything goes over Johnnys head in Minute Maid that runner is good as home... Matsui plays some choppy D in left too but his mantra of "quick release and accuracy is just as good as a cannon" on his throws seems to still work pretty well. Lets hope Joe makes the right calls..

Its a slap in the face to use Chris Britton in the 9th instead of coming in before Veras or Hawkins did.

Should have been Giese for another inning (the guy was starting all year, he had plenty gas left and was pitching well) then Ramirez, then Britton, then the scrubadub duo of Verawkinsif necessary in the 9th.... Best place to park now (I used to park at macombs where the new park is now..) is actually right on the exit ramp for the deegan.

If youre traveling south on 87, hop off the macombs dam bridge exit.

Make a left at that awful light that lasts three seconds... then instead of going straight to the stadium, stay right and jump on the ramp as if if you were heading back north on the Deegan.

That ramp that spirals down back toward the highway used to be off-limits, but now its my favorite spot to park, just throw it right in there on the grass and throw the dude 5 bucks whos standing there. Its a short walk from there and you can stop off at the cheap hotdog man(seriously, they're great too) right in front of the main lot across the street from the bat. This spot also makes a quick getaway even easier.

*note* I assume NO responsiblity for any tickets you may/may not get, I've been parking there three years now(when I don't have time to hop on the LIRR to take the train, which is obviously the smart thing to do, but it takes a couple hours some days) with no problems but ya never know :-) and don't park next to any of the limousines sitting under there either... theyll ding you up on the way out in a heartbeat.

Well... no offense greg.. but its ARod. The guy is a solid athlete, even at 60% he can look like hes playing 100% by comparison.

Say what you want about his production, but the guy's drive for the game is certainly unparalleled, he wants to play all the time, he probably wishes games went 10 innings each.

Sure they couldve been a little more firm, but I can see why he's a hard person to turn down when he wants in...

Yeah Santana's slated for friday now. I personally wouldve prefered Raz to go up against him, Its a lot of pressure to pitch against the guy many thought you shouldve been traded for, especially when:

A) He's now on the Mets.

and C) You just got back from a minor league stint.

Well the lineup you have in your post had melky in center and damon in left, so did yahoo sports' lineup.

I love Gonzalez too, but he already has been playing everyday in Scranton, Morgan needs to pound on these lefties... but man, to see gonzalez damon and melky in a row with abreu and jeter and his team leading RISP avg. wouldve been great.

Plus Detroit is 0-5 on Sundays this year.

But our Dynasty was upheld by Bob Watson... After Gene Michael left, Bull did a great job plugging holes(Brosius, Knobster), and before Cashman he was an anchor advocate for fortifying our minor league system before we got all that cash and threw it at everyone.

But one thing he's done right was the Francona Rule, making sure every manager wears either a team jersey or jacket in the dugout... Terry got real pissed when he sent that spy to see if he was actually wearing his or not haha.

Well only because I know a lot about the mets and their fans and their analysts and they all think Jose's attitude and personality will further inhibit his production.

Gardner obviously is more of a grinder than Reyes, and thought we dont know much about him, he cant be much more of a goofball than Jose is... But no, I still think Reyes is better, I just believe that Gardner will consistently always be a pest throughout any series of 9 innings.

As a rabid Yankee fan, and also as a huge Dolphin fan, I know the trials and tribulations of once having dominant perennial success, only to finally decide to take a backseat to watch the action unfold elsewhere in your division.

That being said, in the true spirit of solely developing Hughes and Kennedy and Joba into three quality starting pitchers, I say go for it, lets take a mental sabbatical on Mission 27 this year and keep our hopes up for this dump of salary woes (Giambi, Pavano, Mussina, the like) and focus on that brand new season in that brand new stadium with a few brand new arms and a couple brand new acquisitions(Teixiera and/or Sabathia) and we can all flourish in 2009.

But the comparisons of Dolphin practices and Yankee lore end there... for I really cant imagine what Lil Stein will do if we get left without an october invite. Plus the whole pride factor comes into play as well. This season can still turn into something magical, and history shows we have every element to turn magic into reality this year, not next year.

But in order to do that. Something must be done with Jason Giambi.. Shelley Duncan has to strap on the proverbial number 25 this year while he still has a chance... and guys like Scott Patterson and Brett Gardner need to show their faces well beyond the rosters expand in September.

All in all, its much better than our rally killing woes of last season... All of our lefties couldnt buy a hit in april, and how was our lineup situated?

Damon - struggle
Jeter - hitting
Abreu - struggle
Arod - Godlike
Matsui - stumbling
Posada - Uncanny
Giambi - benched
Cano - started slow as per usual
Melky - also slow to start.

That was every lefty in the order Torre strategically placed to throw off pitching, similar to this years lineup structure. Unfortunately, those leftys also strategically killed every rally we had potential of having.

This year Damon has turned it on a little earlier than usual, Cano will be Cano in April. But Hideki and Abreu have provided great sparks. Melky and our platoon of amazing backup catchers have also done their part as well. So that leaves our holes in 3 lefties (Damon, Giambi, and Cano) and Posada, whom we all knew wasnt going to repeat that .338 madness of last year.

Things are still on the up as far as out lineup is concerned. Tho Arod and Cano have to ease up on the first pitch popups.

Speaking of eyes, did you hear that pregame update Suzyn did on Wilson Betemit?

Turns out its not just pink eye, he has ulcerations on both eyes, and hasnt been able to see at times since early march.

He still is a punk, but that explains why he hasnt hit a lick from the left side at all. He's takin drops to repair the tear on both corneas, lets hope he can come back full force and be a good stick off the bench with that pop we saw last year.

That first photo is odd, I loved my season ticket package that put me in the upper tier section 4 right behind the plate in 2006(aka the year of Felix Herrendous), those boxes were still right on top of the plate, at least 30 more degrees down from where they will be in the new House.

This raises an interesting point...

They say if you shuffle a deck seven times you get the most random order of cards from the point in which you started.. sometimes referred to as a "Perfect Shuffle."

With that said, do you think, that with free agency, and the national attention of actually building good farm systems, talent development, revenue sharing and luxury taxes... weve reached a "perfect shuffle" in baseball?

Looks like all the last place teams have carried great springs into good starts this season, and with the contenders struggling so far, albeit two weeks in, perhaps weve seen a more level playing field take place.

Well, I would've listened closely instead of rolling my eyes, yes, but based on the facts and what kinda dirt canseco had on him, (setting aside Ortiz' sudden explosion from mediocrity in Minneapolis to dominance in Boston, hehe. Listen, Yes, I agree that Canseco and A-Rod were close at one point, Yes, I believe he coveted his wife, and Yes, I do believe he introduced him to his steroid dealer, Ill even go as far as to say that A-Rod called the guy, worked out with him, asked him about juice, got the info, got a quote, almost wrote a check, and chickened out last minute. That's what I envision. That sounds like textbook young A-Rod to me...

But regardless of the truth of the matter, commenting positively or negatively is going to draw any or all attention away from his playing the game of baseball on a level that he's grown used to. Therefore, I think he is doing the right thing by just ignoring the SOB. Since there is no way Canseco can prove the deed was done. It causes too much unnecessary print, posting and ranting. Case in point, look at all the comments in this thread. Imagine all the frenzy if he said Canseco is a liar and Canseco produced phone numbers and other crap.

Then it becomes, why did he call him, did he do it, why didnt he do it, what changed his mind, why did he cheat, how much did he ask about...

Not to mention the world wide manhunt for this "Max" fella.

In Better-Meat's defense, and not saying this is a great excuse... but after finding about his contract extended every press line-up noted that his spot on the bench along with Molina's was gauranteed. So he may have a mental sabbatical as far as competing for a roster spot.

If things were made clear that Betemit was competing for a roster spot, he may have busted it a little harder.

Now like I said, Molina was also gauranteed, and he busted his hide all spring, so there is no excuse for Betemit being lax if that was indeed his intention. But I see where he's coming from if he thought that way.

Woodward is a wanderer, he auditioned for a spot he was almost doomed not to get. Itll hurt, but he's a little used to it by now.

I truly can not believe what I’m reading. I grew up a Paul O’Neill fan through and through… I wore 21 in every sport i played because of Paul. I watched Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan play basketball SPECIFICALLY because they wore 21. I hate the giants but i have a tiki barber jersey… why? 21. I even like Deion Sanders cause he wore 21. LaDainian… 21. When i saw 21 on all the helmets this year in the NFL, it reminded me more of Paul O’Neill than it did Sean Taylor. Roberto Clemente, the best right fielder of all time, wore 21. There were talks of globally retiring 21 for his sake much like 42, and I wouldnt mind it, at least no one else would have it anymore.

The part that really irks me is that we as fans of “The Warrior” have been kept on this leash for 7 years now without that number being given out. I made a pact with my father the day Paul walked off the field as they chanted his name in 2001 that when they retired his number, 21, we would go to that game and sit closer than we ever did.

Paul was a model athlete, meant everything to his team and his team meant everything to him. He exemplified an entire generation of the hard work the yankees put forth in the mid-nineties… Ive checked every schedule as it came out every December hoping to see Paul O’Neill Day on there since 2005. Now after 7 years of respect we can just throw this all away?

What about the other fans just like me? What about the thousands of 21 jerseys i always see scattered around the stadium sitting up in the tier and looking down and smiling seeing all the 21s in the stands…

What about George? George LOVED Paul, Im sure it was Georges decision not to give out Paul’s number, does Hank not have the same soft spot? Is this his doing?

Do NOT give this number to Morgan Ensberg, if you wouldnt give it to Roger, or Cano, dont just dump it on Ensberg… there are far too many fans who pride that number.

για να σου εξηγήσω,

υπάρχει μια συγκεκριμένη σειρά ερωτήσεων -σαν αυτές που περιγράφεις- οι οποίες ανήκουν στην κατηγορία των λεγόμενων "κατευθυνόμενων ή τυφλών ερωτήσεων"

και είναι ερωτήσεις είτε "αυτονόητες" όπως πχ, "θα θέλατε όλες οι αγορές σας να είχαν μηδενικό ΦΠΑ?"

είτε ερωτήσεις με έντονους επιθετικούς προσδιορισμούς ή "βαριά" ρήματα όπως καλή ώρα αυτό που έγραψες, "πιστεύετε ότι έχουν γίνει βήματα ώστε να μην καεί όλη η Ελλάδα αυτό το καλοκαίρι;"

και βασικά το σκεπτικό είναι πάρα πολύ απλό,

αν θες να έχεις μια (σχετικά) αντικειμενική εικόνα της κοινής γνώμης δεν μπορείς να εκβιάζεις τις απαντήσεις της αρεσκείας σου με επιθετικούς προσδιορισμούς ή ερωτήσεις που "δεν χωράνε δεύτερη απάντηση"!!!

παρ'όλ'αυτά μην απελπίζεσαι, ίσως τώρα με την μετακόμιση ο Γιωργάκης να αποφασίσει να κάνει τα γραφεία της Τρικούπη εταιρία δημοσκοπήσεων... να έχει και με κάτι να ασχολείται ο καημένος ο Λαλιώτης με τον Κουλούρη... κρίμα είναι να κάθονται!!!

ίσα ίσα που το "κατώφλι" επιβάλει σε όλους όσους βρίσκονται πριν από αυτό να κάνουν έναν αρκετά σοβαρό μίνιμουμ όγκο δουλειάς προκειμένου να το διασχίσουν

η δικιά μου η ένσταση σε ό,τι αφορά την ενισχυμένη αναλογική είναι στο κομμάτι της "ενίσχυσης" του πρώτου κόμματος

γι'αυτό και πρόσφατα ακούσαμε αρκετούς έμπειρους βουλευτές (Σουφλιάς Βενιζέλος κ.α.) να κανουν κουβέντα για το Γερμανικό βουλευτικό εκλογικό σύστημα

μόνο ψηφοδέλτιο επικρατείας (ένα με όλους τους συνδυασμούς) στο οποίο πρώτα σταυρώνεις το κόμμα της επιλογής σου και μετά μεμονωμένους βουλευτές από άλλα κόμματα (κόβοντας σταυρούς από το τέλος προς τα πάνω από το κόμμα επιλογής σου)

εξαιρετικά απλό και δίκαιο σύστημα που δυνητικά θα μπορούσε να δημιουργήσει πρόσφορο έδαφος για την αποκέντρωση, τους "μητροπολιτικούς δήμους" και την αύξηση των αρμοδιοτήτων της αυτοδιοίκησης

το ζουμί της ενισχυμένης αναλογικής δεν είναι στο "κατώφλι" αλλά στο πριμ των εδρών που παίρνει το πρώτο κόμμα

σήμερα (και αύριο και όσο θα υπάρχει αυτό το έκτρωμα) έχουμε ένα κόμμα να έχει την πλειοψηφία των εδρών χωρίς όμως να έχει την πλειοψηφία των ψήφων και άρα την στήριξη του λαού

αυτό δημιουργεί αυταρχισμό (στον πρωθυπουργό πρωτίστως και στο κυβερνών κόμμα δευτερευόντως) και καταργεί "στην πράξη" (όπως θα έλεγε και ο Αλαβάνος) και τον παραγωγικό διαλόγο, και την συνεργασία, και τον έλεγχο πράγματα τα οποία θα έπρεπε να είναι στο "job description" των βουλευτών αλλά σήμερα απλά γελοιοποιούνται

Hi, I love that you wrote a very in depth article about Michael Mann's work, but there's also a couple of errors, mostly just technical. For example, you mention deep focus or high depth of field as being shorter. This is incorrect. Short/shallow depth of field refers to more selective focus, as opposed to Mann's use of very deep focus so almost everything from the foreground to background is in focus.

Digital cameras themselves aren't more light sensitive than fastest film stocks. Many have the light sensitivity of a high speed film stock, but there are film stocks that heavily exceed this as well. This is probably a misconception based on the words of Michael Mann and his cinematographers. When they speak of the ability of digital to see into the night, they are referring to the inherently high depth of field of smaller than 35mm sized sensors such as on the 2/3" CCD cameras like the Thomsom Viper or the Sony F23, not necessarily that digital cameras are more light sensitive.

In order to increase depth of field, you must stop down (or close up) the iris, but this happens at the expense of how much light reaches the sensor or film. Thus you generally need a lot of light to have high depth of field. However, depth of field is higher on smaller gauges like 8mm or 16mm in film and 2/3" and 1/3" sensors on digital cameras, so they do not need to stop down as much. Digital itself does not high depth of field, but the Mann intentionally cameras that do, although he does do this at the expense of overall visual quality, not unlike using 16mm instead of 35mm for higher depth of field.

Also, you mention the use of digital in a club scene. This is incorrect, as in Collateral all the interiors and day scenes were shot with celluloid. This was intentional, since lighting is much more easier to control indoors. Increasing the amount of light for the skyline of LA on the other hand is quite impossible.
