Remember when you were going through my .htaccess file and found all of those IP addresses? That's what I was trying to do -- I would go through the server logs and find the IPs of "dropped" referrers, and then ban them. It doesn't work all the time, but it did cut down on the amount of repeat offenders. I noticed a significant drop after I added certain IPs to the banned IP list.

Oh my GOD. I remember hearing one of those stations when I was a kid. I had a little pocket AM radio, and back then you could pick up stations as far away as Canada if weather conditions were ideal. I remember coming across one where a woman's voice read off numbers and nothing else -- it gave me the creeps, and I was convinced it had something to do with communists...or bad things. (Hey, I SAID I was a kid. I couldn't have been any older than 5 or so.)

How funny -- they're still in operation.

Okay. Now I can actually put some thought into this instead of posting randomly.

For what it's worth, I don't think Aaron's a bad person -- just a careless writer. The two are not intertwined to the point of no return, and careless writing has no reflection on one's moral character -- at least not to me.

After the election, I made a few posts that were...careless, and Aaron pointed that out -- in fact, I think that's how we "met". Anyway, after thinking about what he said -- I realised he was right. There's no sense in spouting off just for the sake of spouting off, which is what I felt Aaron did with his MLK post. But it certainly doesn't change how I view Aaron as a person. Free speech is free speech, period.

For me, it's definitely the content. I don't expect everyone who has a blog to also be web-savvy or particularly adept at creating the graphics. Blogs are a way for each of us to have our own corner of the internet, so to speak -- a way to interact with the world, whether it's the world at large, or your own little world of family and friends.

Yes, we could go on and on about standards and aesthetics...but why? Unless it's a corporate blog, are any of us all that worried about who drops by? I know I'm not. My blog is my "open house" -- a never-ending verbal cocktail party where people can come and go as they please. If they come back again and again, great. If they choose never to come back, that's okay too.

I spend so much of my time on what my *clients* want/need...my blog MY space. I can write as often as I like, about anything I like.

I'm not touching this one today. But I do think companies need to get a grip when it comes to holidays -- Veterans Day is an important day, and should be considered a "real" holiday -- and not just a day to sell mattresses.

I will say this about MLK Day -- it's not as widely "celebrated" as you might think. Some states don't count it as a holiday at all, and life goes on as usual.

Interesting take on Vietnam. However, if you talk to people like my parents -- people old enough to remember living through it all -- you'd find that there was indeed quite a lot of footage on the TV news, most of it quite disturbing. Not quite as live as the CNN coverage of the Gulf War -- but disturbing nonetheless.

You should also make sure to buy ALL of the bread, milk, and toilet paper in the supermarket like the lady I saw last Friday. Never mind that the bread will be moldy within three days, just buy it anyway. Ten loaves of the cheapest white bread is apparently the correct amount of bread to last through a one-day "storm".

And be sure to be as rude as possible to other shoppers in the supermarket -- remember, it's all about SURVIVAL.

The person you really need to go after is Baltimore's state's attorney Pat Jessamy. Talk about ineffective...I literally see red when I think about some of the terrible mistakes she's made while "serving" the city. She's a poor leader, and certainly not fit to help the citizens of Baltimore reduce the crime rate.

When Police Officer Thomas Newman was murdered (execution-style, no less) she refused to seek the death penalty. I couldn't believe it -- and I've disliked her ever since.

This is a tough one. I have a friend (and I'm sending her a link to this entry, so maybe she'll chime in with her two cents, too) -- she left her job to take another one (state government level) only to have her position eliminated soon thereafter. What should have been a good move for her actually turned out to be a nightmare, in so many ways.

It's been my experience that the devil you know is (sometimes) better than the one you don't.

If you stick it out in your current position, it may open new possibilities (promotions) that you may not have considered yet.

As Jody says, the web is a great equalizer. If you're looking to have a large readership, you'll get it if you offer what people want.

Think of it this way -- there are maybe five major newspapers in the US, and then the smaller papers -- the New York Times probably isn't concerning itself with the Juniata (PA) Sentinal, but the Sentinal probably isn't asking the NYT for help.

If it was me, I would want to die with as much dignity and grace as possible...not writhing and drooling on national TV.

This, to me, is why having a living will is so important -- make *sure* your family knows what you expect. Have it in writing so there's no room for interpretation.

Worst case scenario, I hope my daughter just trips over the cord and pulls the plug, so to speak, by accident...if nobody's willing to do the deed on purpose. Honestly. I don't want to go out like this poor woman.

I was looking at one of the Related Entries -- the one about a guest blogger. You specify that the person has to be a US citizen -- why? It's interesting sometimes to get the views of non-citizens, especially on our politics here in the US. Just a thought...
