It is absolutely mind boggling that anyone who is smart believes that raising tax rates will raise tax revenue. Thats been proven SO many times its infuriating that anyone thinks this will do anything.

Raise tax rates and the rich, who for some reason the democrats think are dumb, will fund other ways to avoid those additional taxes. How many times in history has this has to be proven before the democrats get it?

The top 10% of wage earners pay 71% of all tax revenue. Thats not a fiar share?

Capital Gains taxes affect the rich, but they affect MORE the garbage men, the grandmothers, the young couple saving for a house. Hey young couple, you saved for a house and earned $5,000 in gains. Woah - nope sorry - you are rich so I will double tax you and take an additional 15% of your gains.

"Change" is all that will be left in anyones pocket once Obama is elected.

And... "everyone" doesn't hate republicans. If they did, then Mr. Obama would have a landslide on his hands. If he does manage a win, it will be a squeaker. Why? Because there are a lot of smart people that don't yell as loud as the liberals who know what is right, and will vote common sense...

The Tribune would do well to remind its readers of general respect as well as libel law and how the criminal system works. Someone is not guilty until convicted of a crime. While the law governing Internet forums is still up for interpretation and there is not clear precedent for how forums will be seen as opposed to tradiional editorial content, some law experts do believe that if a newspaper is informed of libelous content on their Web site, they do become responsible for it. Again, the Tribune would be well-served by informing posters that they should refrain from malicious statements, and commenting about someone as if they are guilty before they have been convicted.
Perhaps this article from a newspaper owned by the Tribune's parent company may be illmunating to some of you. Unfortunately it seems the Tribune does not share the integrity of its sister paper:

TAHLEQUAH DAILY PRESS —
Online readers of the Tahlequah Daily Press may have noticed we’ve added several new features, which we’ve told you about. We’ve also revived a couple of old ones that had fallen by the wayside.
Before CNHI bundled all its Web sites under one system, newspapers in the company were using a variety of Internet service providers. The one the Press was using allowed readers to comment on individual stories. Under the new system, while readers can still discuss stories, the postings are lumped under a discussion forum. This is more difficult to manage than individual postings, which could be screened by employees of the “target” newspaper, as well as through a program from the Web site administrator. Although the Press initially participated in this forum, we suspended it last year because so many people were complaining about the behavior of one or two posters. Although we asked these folks to refrain from inappropriate comments, they wouldn’t, and eventually, most participants dropped out. Several told us they did so because of one individual.
Now, the system is a bit more refined, and we can track posters and eliminate inappropriate comments, though there may be “lag time” before we’re able to do it. We look forward to the day when we can block those who would damage the integrity of the forum with malicious gossip, name-calling and outright lies. At any rate, we’ve decided to try it again, in the hope that we can offer readers an open forum for intelligent, thoughtful conversation about local current events. Anyone who’s interested in getting involved can sign up on our Web site (www.tahlequahdailypress.com). We invite everyone who shares our goal of informing, discussing, entertaining and persuading – even if that means heated but fair argument – to jump on the bandwagon. The forum has been open for nearly three weeks now, and a few people have already ventured onto it.
For anyone tempted to start trouble, perhaps a quick civics lesson is in order. You are not entitled to “freedom of the press” simply because you can log onto a computer. The “freedom” belongs to those who “own” or at least work at the press in question, not to those who send in letters or participate in forums. There are still laws governing libel, character defamation and privacy invasion, and while we don’t expect readers to understand all the legal particulars, we do expect them to understand that if we can’t “prove” someone is guilty of a crime, immoral acts or other unsavory behavior, we shouldn’t print it. And although the general public has more latitude for online forums, we are nevertheless obliged to try, to every degree possible, to prevent readers from using our media to print those kinds of allegations, either.
For example, a poster shouldn’t write “Joe Blow committed an illegal act,” unless Joe Blow has been convicted of doing so. The contributor might instead say, “I disagree with what Joe Blow did” – but of course, in explaining what it was that Blow did, the poster should be able to back that up as well. Newspapers have “qualified privilege” to use a police log or court documents to report someone has been “arrested” on the “allegation” that he burglarized a home, or that he has been “charged” with the burglary, but we can’t say he “committed” the burglary until a court says he has. And further, if he is acquitted of said crime, we’re obliged to report that, too, and we shouldn’t bring up the fact that he was accused in future reference.
So, in our quest to maintain a legitimate “news” forum, we ask posters to remain civil, and to refrain from accusing anyone of wrongdoing they can’t prove, although they’re welcome to discuss criminal charges filed against individuals. Those who do not can expect their comments to be deleted. We remind these folks they can find a niche designed more for such discussion at www.tahlequahtattler.com. And if posters won’t cooperate, we may have to suspend the forum again...
More than ever, we want readers to become involved in the production of our newspaper. But we don’t want a few bad apples to spoil it for everyone else. Please respect the opinions of others; refrain from malicious attacks; stick to the issues at hand; and avoid gossip that can’t be proved. There’s a place for that, perhaps, but it’s not at a newspaper."

People like Rosie bring shame to the name of the many of us of Irish descent who are not hateful racists. I just want to say that many of us Anglos who live in Lawrence are not racist and enjoy the wonderful diversity of the Immirgant City. Bravo to the Hispanic Week festivities, I've always enjoyed attending the activities and celebrating the diversity of this city, my home. I love this city and it makes me ashamed to read the racist comments here. Not all of us feel this way, and it's disgusting that the Tribune has let the comment function degenerate into this. Many other newspapers have moderators that would, for example, weed out racial slurs, like the "N" word and "spic" which I've seen people use freely on these forums. I've always known that there were still racists in the Merrimack Valley but here people can comment anonymously like the cowards that they are. I'd love to see you use your real names or say these things publicly in person to someone of Latin descent. I'm sorry, Yadira, that you have to read these sorts of comments attached to your lovely article. I must say I have always enjoyed your writing and you do a good job covering many aspects of life in Lawrence that the Tribune would otherwise ignore. Too bad the Tribune doesn't have more Latinos on staff, then again, the newspaper doesn't really care about practicing sound community journalism.
Many people commenting here are sick individuals and should not be given a public forum to spew their hatred. I don't want to stoop so low as to respond to her postings but I must say one thing....next time you, Rosie, LOL about the arson epidemic you sick sick woman you should really watch what you say. It's wasn't a laughing matter to the firefighters, many who are Latino, who worked so hard during those years. And yes I lived here during the 90s, you didn't, and it's not funny to say you hope Lawrence burns down. People were hurt then, people died. And just for the record, Roland Turcotte was not Latino...if you know so much about Lawrence history you should know that he was responsible for many many of those fires in Lawrence.

Hitchhiking still works in Ireland. I have been doing it all summer. For instance, I hitchhiked from Dublin to Limerick today. It took me less than 4 hours. Scoble, I liked your blog for long time. Your blog was very objective (together with your Channel 9 videos) for someone working for Microsoft.

You do ask provocative questions from time to time, but smart people could sense self-censorship was always present. Anyway... all that was better than reading PRs or marketing collateral....

But your reaction to story about Vista code rewriting, which for sure is not true, shows where your heart is really about.. And what kind truth you are defending. Your company lied about much bigger stuff, much bigger. For years...from top management to the whole world. Shame on you. You deserve this..

I know MS is happy to have Vista finally working without crashing when running something simple for couple of hours. Wow...this is 2006, Microsoft is biggest SW maker in world, Vista is more than 5 years in development and whole world should be happy because you guys finally did beta which does not crash? Get real...

You are not on the mission to go to the Moon for the first time, so whole country (or world) is living your mission accomplishments, and every milestone is big event for all of us...
We have alternative already on the market, it does not do not crash, and have everything Vista will have (maybe), once it is released...

Get your stuff together...finish that product on date as you have promised, and we will then judge what MS can produce in 5+ years. Did you rewrite 60% of code in 9 months or in two weeks, or you did not rewrite anything - who cares. Get us working product ASAP.

So please...try to stay "objective" as you did before, and your blog and Channel 9 will be on my day-to-day reading list...

btw. I read on IE blog about some disturbing features of brand new IE. For example someone asked "will IE have feature "Open links in Tabs", IE dev team answered something like this "No, but this is cool feature, we like your feedback". Com'n guys, this can be added in 1 day. Didn't you see this features in Firefox a year ago? Or in Safari? Do you have single developer who can do something without asking Bill first? I hope Bill will schedule this feature for IE 8 :)

That kind of attitude toward users shows perfectly clear that you still think users are stupid and will believe yours feature set is the best they can get?

The article calls TS3 a "sequel" - in my opinion it is not actually a sequel, really. The cost-saving benefits that DreamWorks gets from re-hashing the same characters 50,000 times over (a la Shrek #12) and the benefit of holding onto the brand of Shrek is an argument you can make against Cars 2, if you must. But TS3 will be a very strong movie, than can easily stand on it's own without the previous 2. There are no technical benefits to re-using characters created in the mid-90's, and it's obvious that Pixar has a special place in it's heart for TS3 - ergo the killing of the Disney version asap after the buyout.

I would not even think about TS3 as a sequel. Sure it "uses the same characters" but this will be FAR from a hacked together piece just for toy sales. It is going to be amazing. And with Michael Arndt writing it, I think it's going to be really funny too.

Anyone know if I can still have my full keyboard in portrait mode? I cannot use SureType and the small individual keys on the Curve work just fine for me - so I'd like to choose that it uses a full keyboard always - regardless of orientation.

The irony is that men seem to bitch and criticise more about men doing good fashion looks yet they aren't man enough to talk about fashion. Try to get a grip on that.

The above examples are just a minuscule presentation of menswear or everyday working guys with jobs/studies wearing what they feel comfortable in. Why suddenly everything has to be pigeon-holed into a notion of high fashion?

The worst thing of all is the fact that Refinery29 used to be a good, alternative website for seeking fashion that was spontaneous yet relevant. Now all I can see is rubbish about celebs, trends, overloaded with mediocre commentary or to a blogging standard. It's a big shame.

Hey Paglia is sometimes interesting and thought provoking. Give her credit. But she is also obviously nutters, and the two things don't exclude each other.

What is pernicious about this comment, and it does mean that I lose all respect for her, is the way in which she uses the "legitimate questions" argument. Well duh. OF COURSE there are legitimate questions, that's not the problem. The question is whether there have been legitimate or reasonable responses to those questions, and if she isn't aware that there have been, it's clear that she's not just playing dumb, she's playing vicious.

As for racism... again, duh. "Democrat" explains opposition to Clinton. To get to the level of vitriol and wing nuttery Obama gets, you have to have another explanation, and there is only one, and if you say you don't know and you are not sure and that's not the whole story and blah blah blah, then look inside your heart because you are lying to yourself and to everyone else.

Everything that goes beyond Clinton hatred (and there is plenty) is about the racism. Some Americans just can't accept a Black man as President. The election sent them into crazy zone.

Those folks are I believe a dying breed. Their time will pass.

This is a dumb comment. It went platinum 11 times and was the biggest selling HH album ever. Seems like more than a few hipsters liked it.

Agree, Louis. I follow about 20 topics regularly on AllTop. It will be nice to not have to visit the topic page every time I want to revisit one. I'm in PR/Media/Social media relations, and I find it to be one of the most valuable sites to find the best content on the web, and a great way to discover blogs that may otherwise stay buried in a Google search.

Wouldn't mind RSS feeds for each topic ;-)
