EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED :)

Change Your Page I'm not one for internet bullying, so consider this a critique. I wanted to see what this was about, so found one link randomly (yours) and clicked it. I read three things, and realized you appear to be a total douche. "Blogging, reading blogs, entrepreneurship." Why not include pole-smoking and being a brown nosing sycophant who thinks too highly of himself? I was going to leave it at that, but I'm so intrigued by you I'm going to read the rest, and try to take you off your high horse so you can do something about it. Not that everything on there is bad, the Ronald Reagan quotes, for instance, are great, but for your betterment as a person, and so when you 'friend' people on facebook they don't accept it, laugh you behind your back, and secretly hate you, which anyone who reads your facebook will. It takes a stranger to say this.
1. I'm not going to insult looks, and you're not necessarily bad looking. But that pictures is, well, the first douchy thing people see. Let's see a picture of you smiling, not shrugging in a "I don't know how I got so awesome" way.
2. You say 'spritual' for religion (total douchy thing to do), and mention what seems to be a judeo-christian God. Claim Christianity or pick a religion, don't say 'spirituality' like you're some guru. If you don't actually practice a religion, but would like to make it known you don't think there's more to life than what we know, say something witty like 'It's complicated." But not 'spirituality.'
3. You do more than read and write blogs. I don't actual think your a douche, you do something else, so say it. Do you work out? Do you read? Do you play an instrument? And twittering is not an activity.
4. Your interests are mostly fine. Reading is more an activity, I would say. I like that roller coasters is on there. See? It's fun, not phony, and unique, which I think is your ultimate goal. I find it interesting you say "helping people," but we'll return to that shortly.
5. I dig the variety of music. Douches only listen to one type: Bad. So nicely done.
6. TV Shows are good. But the Mole? Oh well.
7. Movies: I wouldn't agree, since i don't like those movies, but they're fine EXCEPT FOR The Secret. If you really like it, fine, but consider this: Do you really think they know the secret to your happiness? Is that a universal truth that can be sold in a book and on a movie? Or are they asshats that spurt generic platitudes that people buy into because they sound pretty.
8. How about some books not about Economics and being successful? You know what most successful people who are in those book never did? Took advice from books on 'how to be successful.' And you're interests, as stated by 'Roller Coasters,' are more interesting than success and business. You have no favorite literary classics? A Tale of Two Cities? Les Miserables? Contemporary novels, mystery novels, historical nonfiction, anything besides business books? The way you present them here are "Hey, I read a lot about business! I'm sooooo interesting, see?" It doesn't make you interesting, it makes you less interesting. And, once again, a total douche.
Maybe quote SOMEONE else than Ronald Reagan.
9. Okay here's the meat of it, the About Me section...
-Flaky People... Sure, keep it. It's weird, but alright.
-Users don't deserve my time... Excuse me, what the fuck did you just say? As someone who is spiritual, and who claims their interest is 'helping people,' maybe you shouldn't sound like such a heartless asshole (which, later on down the list, you don't have room for). They are people too, often people in trouble who could use help. But if they're not worth your precious, holier-than-thou minutes, maybe you can use them time raising that ivory tower a few more inches.
-I'm going to skip the rest of the hypocrisy and get to the point. You're a 24 year old who works at Macy's. You're not fucking Buddha here. The wisdom you spurt in the 'about me' section is generic, one lined cliches that you're trying to use to get people to think you're a thoughtful or insightful person, but once again, it's a douchey thing to do. And besides, they can all be summarized in two words that actually DO make you look like a kind, caring, even wise person: "Be good." If you only left "Don't forget to have fun," it would be great. We already know you're hardworking, you've beaten it into our skull at this point.
-Looking for fellow entrepreneurs on facebook... good luck, i guess.
-You claim to want to help others again. Except, you know, drug addicts.
-You say you want to meet people who want to meet interesting people, implying of course you're an interesting person. Don't make that claim because A. it's arrogant, even if it's true. B. I'm not convinced it's true. C. If it is true, and you acknowledge it, you're immediately less interesting, because douchebags aren't that interesting.
-You'll retort back to me that I'm a negative person, but I'm really not. I'm a thriving optimist. That's why I don't believe you're an actual douchebag, just that you don't quite see the appearance you're giving with your facebook.
-Motivational tapes... Like books about how to be successful, successful people never used them. Now if you need them for other reasons (like to kick an addiction, or to remain strong in faith) that's different, but if they're motivating you to be successful, well... I just think that sort of stuff comes from within.

I'm adding you to my bookmarks. I'll be interested to see if you ignore this as an internet asshole or if you'll change it for the better. But I think you should, and maybe there'll be more on your wall than, y'know, you. I think you're a good person that means well, but is a little clueless on how to present it.

I also write this as someone who once had, and maybe even still has, some of the same arrogance that plagues your page. You seem like a good guy who wants people to know he's a good guy. Don't force it, let it happen. I'll be watching. Like a stalker.

Creepy.

I love how you started off this post. Right to the point and you painted a picture. Just like you said. Knowing your customers and or audience is probably one of the most important things to always keep in mind as you continually produce content and engage your audience. Great stuff!

Awesome video!

I really like how you talk about how it takes a bad economy to make people really think. It makes me want to ask, "Why aren't entrepreneurs and business owners thinking like this all the time?"

The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur did a similar video today on why now is the best time to grow and make positive changes in a business.

Interesting Mindset! I like how you put it!

In a sense...Go for the low hanging fruit...and once you dominate that niche the big shows will naturally pay attention to you...just look at Tim Ferris. A poster boy for this way of marketing!

Why change something that isn't broken?

I think they needed to change it to open up more ad space for their advertisers...so they can stay afloat.

I just don't like how it flows though. BLAH.

Jack,

I really like how you talked about transparency on the web, and how you "classified" the fakers.

Dan,

Keep up the good work. Your passion for personal branding shines through in your voice/and through your blog. Keep it up!

I couldn't agree more with this post.

The more impersonal the relationship you have with your networks, the more impersonal of a relationship they will have with you...You get back what you send out.

In the fragmented social media space...I see this as more reason to pick the sites that you want to focus your energy on, and leave the rest to go their separate ways. The more focus and attention you put towards something the more benefit you will get out of it!

You don't need to be on every social networking site imaginable to be effective!
Charlie Profit No you don't need to be on every social networking site to be effective. But if you have friends on several networks and want to update them all, it's easier to use Ping. Of course we could all go back to using email. But the point is that different people like different services. And instead of locking out some people because you are focused on one or two services that they aren't on, you can actually develop more relationships by being where they are.

But the great thing about the Internet is if you don't like it, you don't have to read it or use it! So, ignore those Twitter posts via Ping. Or Pownce updates via Ping. You will be the one missing out. I guarantee there are more people paying attention to a Ping post than not!
devnet You missed all of the comments before you made yours. You CAN keep all of your crap together if you set it up right.

in Noise Reduction on Chris Brogan
Interesting post Chris.

Like you, I think it is important to have your own unique personality and voice that stays consistent over time as you look to be "above the noise."

Adding to this, I also think it is important that as a business or personal brand that you know who you intend to speak to...or in other terms your target market...and stay consistent in the communication to them over time.

I think where people make the mistake is that they think they need to be all things to all people...and by trying to do that they miss the mark completely and just join all of the other people making the noise you are talking about.

in Primary Monetization Model for Social Media: Advertising on Social Times
I think one thing that would be fair to do would be to integrate some form of monetization strategy from day 1 so the users are used to the advertising from day 1...

You don't have to charge an arm and a leg for it...but let your advertisers know that you can give them a deal because you are just starting the site.

But then the question that web 2.0 companies ask themselves is...Does any form of advertising on a site starting off push away users from joining a site initially? I think that would be an interesting study to do on this blog...to see what people would say.

Because if the core user base was used to it from day 1...and were understanding that these sites HAVE to make money to stay in business...then wouldn't it make users more receptive to looking and clicking the ads?

Just my two sense...thoughts?
