As a Firefox advocate I solved the problem by installing Cool Iris "Previews" which permits browser in browser viewing. When I hover the link a small blue icon appears and if I hover the icon a new and smaller window opens. As soon as you hover away from the new window you're left where you started. It's made browsing so much more efficient. There are features like being able to stack the previews, which minimizes the screen and anchors it to the right side of the browser. You can actually pop out of a preview into a full fledged window. Highly recommended.

in Friendfeed.. How do you like it? « My Thoughts On Social Media on Social Media Marketing Strategies
That is too funny, thanks Mike. I like this type of analysis about the community, as I know these ideas will get refined as more observations are made and the social dynamics of FriendFeed become more clear. Great Post!

Adding to my FF response... Steve Rubel, Jeremiah Owyang, Chris Brogan... all interesting writers with diversity...Rubel is always posting interesting links and messages on FF, Owyang always covers interesting research/trends, Brogan has a very loyal community...in another category I'd put Eric Schonfeld, Mike Arrington, Mathew Ingram

When you say "another category", is that a positive or negative connotation?

Interesting start to your experiment. People are earning 80+ points a day to make the leaderboard.. I guess that's possible for someone who has the time or is it easy to digg a lot of stories, read your daily blogs and hit 80 points before you know it? to do that on a consistent basis seems challenging...
I look forward to reading the other conclusions you're drawing from this experiment.

This is an interesting experiment you're running Louis. I think Scoble forgets that his observations about his own content are completely unrelated to the average blogger who is significantly less popular. Also, why is he concerned with the quantity over quality.. ?
I like how conversations are spread throughout the web because that mirrors real life interaction - we're not always going to know about or be able to keep up with conversations.

I am just wondering how rooms currently work, but the ability to set up a temporary room would be cool. Maybe when you create the room one of the criteria could be the lifespan of the room - 1hr, 24hrs, 1yr, undetermined - and it would automatically disappear

I was trying to delete a room, but I haven't figured out how to do so. Other than that, good idea.

What happens to rooms on FriendFeed if/when you're done with them? Do they exist with no administrator or disappear altogether?
I can see why an internal messaging system makes sense, especially if users are going to migrate from Twitter. I'm sure the feature could be added in an unobtrusive manner, however, I don't want to see FF adopt feature after feature and begin to lose the simplicity an openness that creates the unique experience we all enjoy so much.

In my idea above the room would be destroyed when you end the conversation - totally ad-hoc. Or were you asking in general terms?

in Which dies first - Twitter or Fail Whale? on Broadcasting Brain
Didn't you write a post about our expectations of free services? I feel like this post goes against some of the arguments you were making before. Have your opinions changed - do you demand more of a free service?
Mark Dykeman
D'OH... I certainly did write that post about free services. The thing is, though, that I was led to believe that Twitter had actually been doing work to improve things, but I haven't seen a huge amount of improvement. In that case, my complaint would be more about expectation setting, which would kind of overrule the expectations of a free service. If the vendor gives you an indication of improvement that's forthcoming, regardless of whether or not it's a free service, then they are resetting the expectations.

in To Comment or Not to Comment on introspective snapshots
Disqus increases my chances of commenting but is not the ruling factor. Mark Dykeman of Broadcasting-Brain doesn't use Disqus but I enjoy joining the conversations he starts and thus doesn't prevent me from doing so. As more people learn of Disqus and understand the convenience factor, it should be harder and harder not to install it.
As far as commenting on FF versus the blog, I'll generally go for the blog first to pay the utmost respect for the writer taking time to share their thoughts. I comment on FF if someone shares something, writes a message or a particular blog entry demands a response that wouldn't fit into the conversation on the blog (less likely circumstance). This is how I've been participating anyway, much could change as I'm in the early stages of understanding my own user patterns and habits.

in Online social networking, time for an intervention? « My Thoughts On Social Media on Social Media Marketing Strategies
I'm not addicted, although I enjoy using the Internet daily. For instance, last Wednesday I decided not to use FriendFeed for an entire week. So far, it's been a great experience and I've discovered unknowns about my usage habits. I think a balance is essential to maintain performance in other areas of life. I've had times where I'm not sure if I was addicted or had nothing else to do, either way, I'm always refining my usage because I want to integrate my Internet use with my day to day away from the desktop (mobile) and as strongly as possible.

in Why There Are No Good Ideas for Twitter Replacements on CodingExperiments.Com
I think you're right in general. One method of adding particular new features would be to completely hide the feature unless the user went to settings and enabled it. That would allow users who want more functionality to gain it and users who like the simple interface to not be bothered at all.

But isn't a part of Twitter about limits? At first, the 140 character limit seems very strict and forces you to write short, punchy sentences. If upping the limit were an option, new users might do so, and then ruin part of the point in Twitter.
There's also the issue of such a simple application with a complex settings dialog.
Of course, a putting it in a settings dialog can be applicable to many things, such as Blogger-like customization of the Twitter page, where you're allowed to move boxes around and so forth.
