So, I am at least going to make some kind of response here.

First, you are right, I am no fan of overbilling. And I think that value billing has the potential to lead one there very quickly. To be sure, I am not opposed to per project fee; however, I am opposed to sliding fees based on how much "value." however that might be measured, that I bring to a project. For instance, how can you know what value you brought until after the project is over? You really can't. However, if you bill hourly, then bill hourly, if you bill time plus materials, then do that. If you bill per project, and the client agrees on the fee ahead of time, then, by all means, go that way. In the end, I think our disagreement is probably more semantics than reality. I believe in utmost straightforward dealings with clients and fair billing. Or, as you point out, what David Maister said, which was to ask for what anyone with your level of experience would ask. In other words, the going rate.

Now, on the topic of integrated marketing and PR programs, I also have an opinion, and that is my marketing in the mix theory. Meaning that all of this stuff shouldn't be done in a vacuum. I also outlined this in my anatomy of a key messaging post where I advocate constructing key messages on the fly based upon key values of the company or brand. This keeps everyone on "the same page" while allowing flexibility in messaging.

Re: What question would you research?

Don't measure or study the tools, but more broadly look at open and closed communication systems in employee communication. What effects do each have and what is the most effective way to reach employees? Through one-way communication tools or a more interactive model. For instance, the great book "Leading Change" talks about incorporating change messages into everyday activities, like employee meetings with supervisors, to get out a change message. The author supposes this works better than,or at least should be used in concert with, "official" channels like newsletters, speeches, etc.

Re: Second Life meetup highlights traditional PR issue – alcoholism

Nice Lee; By the way, the little tic my avatar developed was brought on by the fake Tecate beer I picked up in the American Apparel store. It is now fixed. My suggestion, if you visit the American Apparel (AA) store in Second Life, don't pick up the beer. Just think AA=Acoholics Anonyous and don't do it.

Which brings me to my second point, can avatars pick up virusus or tics, programmed by Second Life citizens, that render them useless? It seems like yet another security issue to worry about. I have been hanging out in your cafe a good bit. In a sense I have made it my home base in SL. Nice place by the way.

In the few times I have visited, I have started to see some of the charm of the place, but it also seems to be a pretty nefareous place as well. It's mostly shopping, gambling and "adult" entertainment."

However, I did visit the University and some of the business spots like American Apparel (where someone left beer at the counter for visitors), Electric Sheep (which builds most of the businesses in SL it seems) and Ceasar's Palace, which I don't think was sanctioned by its namesake. Still, I saw a fabulous fireworks display there.

But for the life of me I couldn't find Text 100s office.

Anyway, at least now if there is a conference there I can actually show up.

Re: Putting an extinguisher to bridges still burning

And I am feeling pretty generous tonight too. It does my heart good to see so many young professionals that "get it." One thing I would add is think strategically. Great PR campaigns don't just happen. There is a tendancy, because the job is so busy and crisis-oriented, to proceed without a plan and rely on instincts. Don't do it. Always take evn an hour or two to think it through. Do some research, give some thought to what you want to accomplish and how you will measure success. Then come up with a tactical plan and implement it.

Re: The False Choice of New Media OR Old Media

I am so with you on this one. I think that the "X is dead" memes are self-serving at best and totally nonconstructive. I do believe that the mediums will change and evolve to fill a need. I think that the need to classify comes from the idea that there is a stark difference between the paid and unpaid "media." However, I find that even this line is starting to blur, as you have outlined above. The key is answering the question, "who is the gatekeeper." The answer is much more complicated than it used to be. (BTW, it is liberating to be out of 140 characters here)

Re: Old Media, Empower Employees To Be Brand Champions!

I think that the key here is that it is now POSSIBLE to have that one-on-one connection to the audience. I think that is the real paradigm shift that has been such a struggle for some media organizations. And can you blame them? Everything has been based on reach in the past, but today it is more about depth. I think media companies will adapt, I don't believe in the "mainstream media is dead" myth/meme.

Re: Amanda Congon, Katie Couric and The Diminishing Value of Celebrity in Media

I think people want their celebs to be approachable, to be more like them. Still, starpower is still a factor. The most searched for terms online are often celebrity names.

Re: Era of Conversation – New Media Marketing Day Recap

Thanks for sharing. I hate writing about myself, so I always dread the bio, but I am going to revisit mine based on this advice. It's no different than adding results-oriented bullets to the resume.
