Great post! I was thinking about posting something similar to this because I just had a few experiences that made me angry. I think now I will take that test too.

It is not a fraternity, but is a house full of young men, some (or all?) of whom attend UW. The son of the owner lives there w/ his friends.

Oh, I haven't been reading too many blogs lately, but if everyone is still doing the group post, mine is ready.

There were morels growing along the fence next door until they started spraying Chemlawn on their yard. Never picked any as they weren't technically mine, but I regret that now :-( It was a nice mossy, partially shaded slope.

I also like Leigh's idea about writing about traveling as I assume most of us since we live abroad have some experience traveling.



Plus, I Like Cincinnati Chile's idea about what our chilenos think ofour blogs, but some bloggers don't have a Chilean signifigant other, so you could say like Chilean friends or something.

What about biggest culture shock upon first arriving to Chile/Latin America?

Shannon, I wouldn't say you are failing. Your Chilean is just really young. It's pretty typical. Cutting the umbilical cord takes much more time that you think it should.

I don't think you'll come in last place. But, I think you could be right about there being lots of foreigners and Chilean men because i see the same woman running everday and we sort of nod at each other in silent support.

Oh, and I agree with Rootless about Germany. I've been there about 5 times and I've never visited a concentration camp because I don't think I could handle it.


Berlin is probably my favorite city in the world. I also like Potsdam where you are an easy walk or bus ride to about three castles. I enjoyed Heidelberg as well. If you go there you can take a boat trip on the Rhein and see where they grow the grapes and see tons of old castles.



Also, no trip to Germany is complete without a trip to Bayern (Bavaria). München is also worth the trip.

Have you thought about Puerto Rico? I loved it. Beautiful beaches and good night life in San Juan. Where do you want to go in the Czech Republic? I went to Prague and thought the architecture was stunning, but the people were crabby and it was gray and dreary.

I didn't know you studied here in high school. I enjoyed your post.

As for the Russian person, I had a friend in Concepción who married a lady from Poland who he met in the States and then brought her and their baby to Chile.



Other than that, I know that you can still find russian brides online to buy and have sent anywhere in the world. The spam box in my email is mysteriously full of offers.

Sounds like a great time! Is it weird that I've never been in love with Chile like so many of the other gringas? When I left the first time I thought " That was fun..." and I had no intention of returning, but in some way it became home, more than Minnesota or the US. It's a very weird relationship I have with this country.

I should clarify what i meant for it to be a "good" thing. One time one of my friends saw an old beater truck driver up Providencia with the word FLAITE painted on top. They were obviously proud to be "flaite". Then, most of my students would call themselves "cuico" without problem and I could tell they enjoyed doing so.


The one no one really wanted to be called was pelo lais.

They are difficult to define sometimes and it sort of depends of the way someone says it because it can be a good thing to be one or the other and then it can also be a very bad thing.
