in Why I like netbooks (Scripting News) on Scripting News
Interesting. Remarks like this make me wonder if I should give the 10-inch netbooks another look.

I have a 901 and I love it. I take it everywhere. The netbooks with the 10-inch screen just look so much bigger. I think it would be more like carrying around a laptop.

Foomandoonian This is my big reservation. For the £350ish I could spend on a 1000 model, I could get a full laptop (albeit not one I desire). I think I'm going to go for it though - the 1000's are still plenty small enough to fit in my bag.

in Kaki King at Turning Point Cafe on Random Musings
You saw Kaki King live? Eric is envious.

#ifdef GUITAR_GEEK

And slightly annoyed at the blurriness in the picture of her tuning. I'm curious what kind of guitar that was. The other one is an Ovation, which is what I have usually seen her with. The blurry one looks like it might be a Taylor.

hadar I don't know if it's easy to find out what guitar she used to record her first CD. If so, then you'll have your answer. :-)

She mentioned that it was extremely rare for an audience to see her playing a guitar that she used in a recording studio, because _most of her guitars get stolen_!!! Wow.

So, this one's been with her for quite a while. She played at least 5 numbers on it, but the vast majority were played on the Ovation.

in Microsoft Madness on Random Musings
To be fair, I should admit that I'm just a Mac user, not a Mac disciple. I hardly ever go to the meetings and I refuse to wear the funny hat. I did go out with the group once to stand at busy intersections proselytizing, but that was just too weird.

:-)

Seriously, I'm still a Unix guy at heart. I use a Mac because it's a pretty good Unix machine with an awesome UI wrapped around it. But vmware fusion was critical. If I had to punt Windows completely, I couldn't do it. I still spend a lot of time doing C# programming in Visual Studio inside a Windows vm.

But one of my current projects is being developed in C, so I also spend a lot of time in Mac OS using emacs and a bash shell. Maybe this is just a phase I'm going through and when I get finished re-living 1991 I'll go back to Windows.

We'll see.

hadar Hmmm, I'm betting they told you to say you weren't a disciple, just to have more influence over me. No, I'm not paranoid! ;-)

Seriously, keep me up on your thoughts over time, as my decision isn't really imminent.

Thanks Eric!

FWIW: I switched to the Mac a couple of months ago and have been very happy with the change. I've got the MacBook Pro 15". I run vmware fusion so I can still use Windows stuff, but most of the time I just use Mac OS X.

hadar Oh no, say it ain't so Eric! While I didn't publicly trumpet you as one of the people I thought would never switch, I secretly thought of you as a brethren in the trenches given you're love of C#, etc.

I guess that all of the Eclipse and Java stuff got you twisted along the way. ;-)

Sigh, one less reason to "avoid" the Mac, though, for the moment, with reasons dwindling, I'm still avoiding... :-)

in Phil Keaggy CD Arrives on Random Musings
My favorite Keaggy CD is
"Acoustic Sketches", but before
you rush out and buy it, let me
say a bit more.

I'm not too surprised at your
reactions to the Keaggy CD you
got. I won't say I agree or
disagree. I just haven't really
thought about Keaggy from your
particular point of view.

But now that I think about it, I
would have to admit that my fan
status with Keaggy is based
almost entirely on his skill,
not so much on his writing or
song selection or even
showmanship.

And I daresay I should have
mentioned that a classical
guitar player Keaggy is not.
:-)

I'm an acoustic guitar player
myself (and you may be as well),
so I tend to listen to most
guitarists through that
perspective. I compare my
guitar playing to Keaggy. I
compare my golf game to Tiger
Woods. Perhaps I should stop
making things so difficult for
myself. ;-)

I once had the opportunity to
hear Phil Keaggy in person at a
very small venue. It was, quite
simply, awe inspiring. The
man's skill is just startling.
And did I mention that he has
only four fingers on his right
hand?

It's also somewhat peculiar to
me that even though Keaggy
identifies himself as a
Christian musician and even
though I appreciate some other
artists in that genre, I don't
think of him that way. To me
he's just a guy who does amazing
things with a guitar.

Bottom line: Like I said,
Acoustic Sketches is my favorite
album from Phil Keaggy, but the
remarks above might help you
decide if you want any more of
his music or if you've already
got more than enough. :-)

Now, dare I mention another
artist or two?

I don't remember seeing you blog
about Michael Hedges.

Or if you're quite daring, have
you listened to any of Kaki
King's stuff?

"Bill Cooley is possibly the greatest acoustic guitarist I have ever heard!"

Wow. That's a very strong statement. It makes me want to hear this guy play.

Still, I'm skeptical about whether I would be able to make the same remark. I've been to see some remarkable acoustic guitar players. Tops on my list would probably be Phil Keaggy, and during the evening I saw him in concert, he set a very high standard indeed. :-)

in Why does most technology feel “random” so often? on Random Musings
I feel your pain. I am simply amazed at how difficult the spam problem has become. I get dozens of spams per day, and those are just the ones that slip through a spam filter that is being regularly updated by SourceGear's syadmin. On my personal server, the situation is basically hopeless.
