as someone who skipped the police in NSW gene (my father and grandfather served (generations before they served in the UK) and my grandfather was shot dead in the line of duty for the NSW police, and as a kid I attended the opening of the NSW police memorial in Goulburn...89..90, I don't remember) it is good to see them embracing social media.

But at the same time they need to be showing what they are doing through similar channels to avoid the mistakes of the past. It's one thing to use social media channels to help, it's another to use those same channels to be transparent.

My aunt also served, and before it hit TV I heard the stories.... lets hope the NSW police use social media to be the most transparent, honest cops in the land. As much as I don't believe them to be anywhere near their Vic counterparts today, trust should be built from the ground up. Police, as a whole do a great job in our community, social media should help spread the good word.

I didn't think the article read well, and the divergence into other online rumors seemed to be padding. That aside though, I'm betting Asher has a source at Fairfax and that he couldn't say a lot about it.

I think the youngest of those links is nearly 12 months old now, which is why I'm surprised to see it come up again today. I don't think I've so much as written about Techmeme, let alone read it since then, and although naturally Gabe and I will likely never eye to eye, I've well and truly moved on. We can't always change others, and I can only influence what I do myself in my actions. Despite his bitterness, I do wish Gabe all the best.

sorry I'm late to the thread. We've publicly offered proof previously on the Apple story, and the Radio story quoted here is a matter for the public record. See my other comment on the thread for more. I'm not sure how much more honest and open I can be on what I'm accused of. I am far from perfect, and we don't always get it right, but we've never made stuff up, period.

I find it fascinating at Gabe Rivera continues to slander me despite having presented evidence previously backing the two things he claims I made up.

For the record, the radio interview he refers to was on the ABC (our BBC/ CBC) and when I wrote the post the transcript wasn't available. It was however available the following day (which I note is standard for the ABC, although sometimes they're quicker) and can still be found on this link:

The transcription is word for word perfect with what I wrote on The Inquisitr I should note.

As for the $800 laptop, I received a tip that proved to be inaccurate. I have offered in the past, and will happily offer again proof of the tip, and access to my email logs to prove that it was an incoming tip (only on the basis that the source is not disclosed.... I give my word that I'd not disclose the name, and I'll stick to it.)

I'm not sure how much more transparent or honest one can be before the likes of Gabe Rivera will ever be satisfied. I've never made up a story in my life, but sure we've gotten some things wrong, as I would suggest most sites do at some time or another. That getting something wrong is a ground for exclusion is interesting given that a number of sites currently featured on Techmeme have made reporting mistakes far greater than we ever have.

I welcome your sentiment Steven, but don't let it worry you. We've moved on and grown.

I don't believe anyone goes to Fry's for the service either. If it were possible, I'd go in and out of the store, not talking to anyone. But their maze and bad stocking choices make talking to folks a practical necessity. On leaving the store, I do what I can to "draft" on someone else, so when they get checked, I just leave. Haven't been stopped once.

I don't think anyone goes to Fry's for the service, just the price and the sheer quantity of what's available. Here you on the having bags checked on the way out business though: that's absurd given they do it when you've already been through the checkout area anyway and purchased stuff.

My WordTwit plugin stopped updating at the same time: API related. It's not just app developers affected, its any site that offers site updates on Twitter and use a plugin that relies on the API to do that.

Possibly. However they do also regularly change the headlines in each item as well, if you follow their RSS feed you'll see the same story pop up multiple times as the headline is changed; perhaps it's a carry over from that?

Duncan - It actually looks like - we're just checking this, but this is the most likely candidate - that the publication occurred as a result of it being saved as draft via the WordPress for BlackBerry app. Either a pre-set on the app we weren't aware of, or a bug, set the post to publish last night. Like I said we're still checking, but we're pretty sure this is going to turn out to be the source of why this post went live without us realising until it was too late. So, cock-up, not conspiracy. Yes, I know some will now argue that this is just "convenient" but as I've said all along, this was not an intentional publication, and we're simply trying to make amends.

One small little hitch, or should that be gaping hole in the story: the post was indexed in Google Blog Search. Not the RSS feed, THE POST. Google Blog search doesn't index RSS feeds, it spiders the site itself (as does Google News, although it's quicker.) There's no technical hitch here, only human error (someone hit PUBLISH.) They should just all own up to the mistake and move along.
