I wrote a thread about a company called CCMOM that uses AI to generate images of clothes that don't exist. The twist here is that they then do actually ship clothes to customers, but the clothes are flattened versions of the ornate images the AI generated. Ethereum's switch didn't happen until September of 2022, long after the crypto/NFT crash. I'm glad they finally switched, but that doesn't change the vast majority of all NFTs have been minted using an incredibly wasteful process. In one single day last year, 470,000 NFTs were minted using PoW Eth. That single day in 2022 is almost equal to how many NFTs have been minted so far this year on PoS. An average of 350,000 NFTs were minted per day (May-June 2022), and the average mint per day now is around 3,000 and dropping.

Since people stopped minting NFTs after the switch, why even bring it up? The vast majority of NFTs were printed using an extremely wasteful process.

I hope Bitcoin will follow Eth's progress and stop relying on PoW, but we both know that's not likely to happen soon. Don't spread the myth that bitcoin is mostly powered by "clean energy" or that the massive amount of energy that bitcoin uses will somehow result in a net good for the world. Bitcoin is largely powered by fossil fuels, especially here in the US, where Bitcoin farms help keep coal and natural gas plants running to meet the increased demand of energy.

That's only true if the singular way you value art is as a financial investment. A beautiful print can always provide aesthetic value to your home, but a receipt on a blockchain provides function beyond gambling in a speculative market.

These are rad! It's cool to see them and it's pleasant to see a story about "rare photos in auction" that doesn't involve NFTs in any way. It would be cool to see these go to a museum of some sort, though.

It's incredibly hard to find "Pop!" in the app store, even when adding "photo" or "filter" to the name. Maybe they'll work their way up the search rankings, but it's too bad they didn't think of a more unique name.

Of course it failed. It was another one of those "the blockchain will protect artists" ideas that looks good from a distance but fails when you start to ask even the simplest questions... And I mean simple as in "How?". In what specific way would that tech do the very basic thing it claimed it could do? Hopefully all the rest of the blockchain scams will go away soon. Especially ones like this that try to scare artists into believing the blockchain has some magical properties.

They announced this in such a weird way. They've been hyping something up for the past wee and then finally said today was launch day, but they didn't say anything about what they were launching... like, at all. It was just a link to Hipstamatic.app which just has another link to the ios app store. I already have the app and the site didn't say anything, so it's kind of crazy that I didn't know anything about their new social network until I saw it described on PetaPixal.

Come on Hipstamatic, y'all really dropped the ball on this launch.

"Any images which have been used for training either should have had suitable licensing in place or they are already violating copyright and the AI should be shut down and fines applied."

It really does come down to this simple idea: "Don't download other people's content and use it to power your software unless they gave you permission." My work is CC0, they can use it how they want, but that doesn't mean they can download anyone's photos/writing/music/etc and use it commercially.

It was a lame announcement and Raspberry Pi only made it worse for themselves with their lame responses to users. In a Buzzfeed article, RP's head of marketing tried make the claim that this was an organized campaign by a gang of vegans who were actually upset that RP posted a photo of some sausages earlier that day. Completely out of touch with reality and explains how this whole thing was handled so poorly.

Funny to look back at this one year later, after the NFT fad has died off. Photoshop never released a "prepare as NFT" button after all, but they are still working on their Content Credentials program which is still trying to profit off of the NFT scam. It claims to prove who created a piece of art, but it does not fix any of the problems that artists are facing. NFTs have caused a massive rise in plagiarism for most artists, the best thing Adobe could do would be to denounce the technology, rather than trying to add some extra layers on top of it.

One more thing that I couldn't fit into the post, but Reddit's ToS also states:
"If you own a Collectible Avatar, then, subject to your continued compliance with these Previews Terms, Reddit grants you a worldwide, perpetual, non-exclusive, sublicensable license to use, copy, and display the Avatar Art associated with your Collectible Avatar for your own personal, non-commercial use."
The usage of the word "non-exclusive" implies that Reddit can make as many copies of each NFT as they want. So if you buy one at a premium price on the secondary market, thinking it's extremely rare, Reddit might decided to sell more of that same Collectible Avatar in the future. At least, that's how it sounds to me.
