I just saw that "credit card holder" bill of eights for the first time. Thanks for that.
Amen. These credit card companies are so slimy, andf that bill removes a lot of the slime. I have been victim to a lot of it because I didn't always read the fine print. There are a lot of important parts there. I like the one where after 2010 the HIGHEST rate gets deducted first. That just makes plain sense. Other wise I had been trapped where I had a promotional balance, but couldn't pay the higher balance down... very shady stuff...

"My first day at school, a black student who’d attended since kindergarten pulled me aside and asked if I knew what an Oreo was. 'Yeah,' I answered. 'It’s a cream-filled chocolate wafer manufactured by the Nabisco Corporation since 1952, and it’s mad tasty.'
I'll let others discuss the far more substantive parts of this post... but that was funny!

nice breakdow.
Okay, there is absolutely no question that the media -- ALL media -- railroaded Dean with his "I Have a Scream" speech. I wanted Dean to win at the time, also liked Edwards... , and didn't care for Kerry 9who really did?). HOWEVER, it is very hard to believe that Dean had any shot at winning in the general. Wrong climate. Obama himself would likely have gotten crushed in 2004. Bush wasn't hated across the board yet. I say all that to say that yes, Dean got railroaded, but I understand why.
In any case, his 50 state strategy was the smartest short-term and longterm plan the Dems have done in years, and while i can'r answer the question about why he was offered no position, I sort of like him in the very spot that he is in right now. Perhaps Obama is thinking the same thing

Chilling and frightening indeed. Thank you for getting this out. This needs to be spread.
Jill, I had the great pleasure to meet you briefly at NetRoots Nation, at which time I also saw a Katrina documentary where a clip exists of Navy officers telling black Katrina Survivors to go away at gun point instead of provide shelter and food. Not vigilantes, not local racist police, but federal military. Perhaps you and others have seen the clip, but i will try to find it.
In any case, will spread word to all I know. This needs a full investigation at the very least, and so much more beyond that.

rikyrah, I think that that this line said it all:
"When White folks claim bi-racial Pookey that just robbed the liquor store and shot 3 people, then I’ll know it’s not just about trying to divorce Obama from the Black community."

in Sup with Tavis Smiley’s Contest for Black Bloggers? on Jack and Jill Politics
Nobody is trippin'...
That is exactly it. JJP blogs for free out of civic passion, has been an invaluable media watchdog, and should be addressed as equals. Also, to reduce your work or another blogger's work to an essay contest is bad, but that whole "imagine yourself hanging out for the weekend" paragraph is pretty damn insulting... There is really no way around the insult.
In Tavis' defense, I'm pretty sure that he didn't write those words...
But what Tavis' and his team should do is their homework and extend an invite and a chair on the SOBU stage to JJP or another political blogger representative if not. To not have black bloggers represented on the stage for all that has been done in the run up to this election (not to mention a whole host of other issues) is to miss the boat entirely.

Major co-sign on this thought!!
"They" should know as much about "bloggers" as they do the"IMPORTANT PEOPLE" that are to be on the panel! What type/category of person are they looking for? All "stripes" of people blog here at JJP!
I read the "Contest Rules". On December 5th we will post the top 5 blogger entrants. The 5 bloggers are encouraged to have their readers vote on their behalf at www.tavistalks.com/SOBU2009. YOU know you’re great, but we want to hear from your readers too! (We’re very impressed by Web journalists with a vast, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable readership. So let all of your readers know! It can only help your cause.)
IT'S A POPULARITY CONTEST! Almost like a PAGEANT!! :>) Where's the DEPTH in making the CHOICE??? [BY "THEM??"]
TOO SHALLOW -to me- for all the "entrant requirements".
So, it's NOT worth the energy needed to enter, IMHO.
P.S. I just re-read this.:>) :>) I wasn't meaning that I thought that I was qualified to apply! LOL! :>) :>)

Welcome and cosign that post Ali! Like you I became a proud white American this week and can't think of the last time that I felt that way about our country
There is simply no understating or understanding the incredible pioneering significance of Obama for African-Americans. But like you, I'm also claiming some serious white pride on this victory over the "southern strategy"... even if that victory is only the beginning of a long and backlashy fight ahead...
And since we're claiming victories, it was also a victory for intellectualism as a desirable trait in our leaders, a victory for decency and honor in our political campaigning, and a victory for the community organizers over the hatred of community organizers... (the irony is delicious!)..
welcome again...

Totally in agreement on the win for intellectualism. For too long in our country, it's been "cool" to frankly, be dumb. It's a big problem in our culture, and something I think we need to address head on.

okay, a little off topic, but at the Netroots Nation conference, Van Jones perfectly summed up my feelings to those critics who worry just how much Obama will or will not be able to accomplish as president. he said:
"I don't need a President to fix everything -- I need a president to stop breaking everything."

in White Privilege…IS THE PROBLEM on Jack and Jill Politics
White privilege is definitely the problem and it is so insidious that even some of the most reasonable people I talk to can't see past its protective bubble.
Even if the double standards in this campaign with reagards to race weren't so appalling, simply the assault on reason and logic alone is unfathomable. Racial bias sure does have a way of making smart people instantly stupid.

Contrats JJP. I don't comment to much, but read it every day, and often link.
IMO, this is the best political blog on the web -- period. No "black" qualifier needed.
And especially of late JJP has been on fire. please keep it up and take a one week vacation starting November 5th.

in Sports Bloggers Can Be Hypocritical, and Lazy on Larry Brown Sports
I just read Henry Abbott's post and he makes some good points. Abbott is an example, IMO, of one of ESPN's GOOD reporters. Perhaps we should weigh the merits of articles themselves no matter where the source of the post.

in Sports Bloggers Can Be Hypocritical, and Lazy on Larry Brown Sports
Larry, good post, good question, and I understand your overall point. Although new to the blog game, I am both an ESPN basher (see link for ESPN's RAP SHEET: Pacman as Black Man") and an ESPN linker. I guess that i will take your hit on being a hypocrite. The reason I will continue to criticize ESPN, Sports Illustrated and other big names is not just because it is easy, but because of wanting to contribute, perhaps naively, to changing their future content. Isn't that one of the goals for all of us?
A reason to link to ESPN is to make a point on a bad article OR sometimes to praise a good article to show readers what ESPN can become.
Having stated that, I will give your argument some more thought. The problem is that I have just as many problems with the AP as I do ESPN.
