I agree - there are other problems which should be tackled first.

However, being taken to a camp and made to horse ride? Put me down for some of that. It used to cost about $500 to go to a horse riding camp when I was that age!

Wow, long replies there, Danny.

The bottom line is though, there's only so many of these social networking sites that one blogger can support. Right now I feel like I have too many on my own plate, which is why I'm not sure I can even look at another one and I'm seriously considering cutting back and trying to pick one and going with it.

I think a lot of bloggers feel the same - that there's too much choice out there, too many people offering this social networking type of thing and realistically if I signed up for every one of them I would never have any time for blogging etc.

Everyone wants to be the next big thing, which is why so many of these are being launched and people aren't supporting the ones that already exist as much as they could be.

It's one thing to have a lot of choices but there comes a point where there's only so much people can take - I'd like to read all the blogs on the planet but there's not enough hours in the day.

Derami - I recommend you check out Google Reader, which I have found much more reliable than Technorati. ;) Especially as Technorati seem to be having some serious issues lately, like losing my favourites all the time.

I am really hopeful with the change in management at Technorati that things might improve soon, because I too have been very frustrated with Technorati recently.

In fact they seemed to keep losing my favourites, I have more than 200 there, and from time to time I visit and it tells me I have no favourites. Considering the amount of time I took visiting all my favourite blogs and making them into favourites, I found this hugely insulting. :(

This is a better message at least, it's reassuring to know they aren't lost but it should have been done ages ago - it would have saved me a few panic moments at least. But as I type this I do have favourites there, so I'm not sure why this seems to be an intermittent thing.

My favourites may come and go as far as Technorati is concerned, but they are still my favourites in my heart, I guess!

Andy,

This post truly makes me see red. I've been seeing red about Google for a little while now. I think what Google are doing is simply illegal.

If you feel the need to take legal action over this I'd just like you to know I'd be willing to donate some $$$ towards the costs. It won't be a huge amount because I'm not rich, but I do believe someone needs to take a stand. I'm probably not the only one who would be willing to donate.

I cannot believe that Google can be so hypocritical. Are they penalizing people using Adsense for paid links? Of course not.

They want the entire pie, and they're not willing to share.

I think it is time we bloggers got serious about not relying on them. We simply can't trust them to act in a fair manner. They can do what they like when they like, and there seems to be nobody sticking up for the bloggers.

A big thumbs down, Google. A huge one. If you annoy enough people, we're going to take our power back one of these days. We'll start using other search engines. We'll stop using your services. Think about what you are doing to people - think about the anger and resentment you are creating by being hypocrites. We the users created you - we can just as easily break you.

Well I just discovered that I have been penalized also - down to a 3 from a 4 at www.snoskred.org so let's party! ;) I'm having a competition to celebrate.

I have to agree with Michael, I'm done with Google. I no longer care what they do to me. I will survive without them if I have to. I'm going to run my blog my way, and I'm not going to let what they might do to me change that.

I really am tired of having their big foot hanging over my head. I have to try and create a blog which won't be affected if they decide to squish me with their foot. That's the challenge now.

I don't think they even care how much anger and resentment they are creating. Again, I say we have to take our power back. We gave the power to them. We can remove it.

Andy, what are the chances of holding a No-Google day - or perhaps a no google week, from December 24 ending at Midnight on December the 31st? I've heard people whispering about it for a while, let's do it and show them we're unhappy. Maybe then they'll realise they don't have the power they think they do.

Yep, I'm now a 0. A fellow blogger emailed me this morning to let me know - they knew I had vowed to stop checking PR.

I'm no longer a Google user. I use Dogpile for searches, Bloglines for blog reading, my own email server for email..

What Google are doing is potentially illegal here in Australia. It certainly breaches the trade practices act in my opinion. I am not a lawyer myself but it seems fairly obvious. The ACCC already has one case against them regarding sponsored link results. I may be the first blogger to contact the ACCC regarding this apparent breach of the law, but I do not believe I will be the last. I would suggest that any Australian blogger who has been affected should call the ACCC on 1300 302 502 (Australian callers) or + 612 6243 1305 (overseas callers) to discuss the situation.

In the meantime I can only suggest that we all stop using Google as much as possible. Vote with your mouse.

Surely you can't be serious? Your sponsors pay you. You link to them. Those links pass on page rank. That is a paid link! They paid, you linked! Do you not get that? Do you think your sponsors sponsor in a vacuum, you're the only site they're paying? Of course you're not the only site they are paying.

Your sponsors are gaming Google just as much as any company who ever used a pay per post campaign. It is absolutely no different to what happens with pay per post, only you get paid a lot more than a Postie would.

Either it is all gaming, or none of it is. You can't have your cake and eat it too on this one.

The bigger problem here is - Google are trying to drive competitors out of business. I don't know what messed up laws they have in the US, but in Australia where I live, that kind of behaviour is against the trade practices act. Google is *already* being taken to court by the ACCC regarding sponsored links.

Who knows who or what is next? The only thing any of us can do is stop using google, and try to convince others to do the same. We have NO power. They have ALL the power.

Explain the difference between paid links and paid advertorials. If one advertiser paid for both, the links link to the same place, right? It is just that an advertorial (or review) contains actual CONTENT. Content is what we bloggers are supposed to create. Not just linking to people.

How would you feel if a company you created was being treated the way Ted's company is being treated? Honestly? Wouldn't it suck? Don't you see that ALL companies on the web could find themselves in this boat, if Google keep changing the rules and never tell anyone what those rules are? You know why they won't come out and say what is going on? Because it is ILLEGAL in some places in the world - my country, possibly the EU. What they are doing is illegal, so they can't admit to it.

^^^^^ I think that also sounds like a snobbish erm, whatever you want to call it. Andy can do better? How up yourself are you, Duncan?

The issue here is simple. Either Google is doing something wrong - regardless of WHO they are doing it to whether it be posties or people who used text link ads or whatever, or Google is right and we should all stop advertising on our sites right now today.

Advice - not sure quite what to call you. ;) But this is in response to what you said.

I completely agree with what you are saying about how they are acting. There is something wrong with their model. They have forgotten that they are a search engine - they have become the Link Police!

Any good search engine should reflect the actual state of the internet. If you search for something, you should be able to find what is out there. It may not be what you are looking for, but it is what exists.

Google should be fighting the content stealers and the scrapers, not bloggers and webmasters who are creating real content. Those are the people they should be targeting to remove from their directory. Is the reason they do not do that because the majority of those scraper type blogs are using Adsense? Well right there they have a conflict of interest, don't they!

If Google doesn't want people to be able to earn money via page rank, they could simply hide the page ranks OF EVERYONE. They could come out and say Ok, we've had enough of people using Page Rank for earning money, and we're removing it from all sites effective immediately.

That's not what they've done. Instead they have embarked on a campaign of insanity!

The question is, are Google the police force of paid links on the internet? Or are they supposed to represent the true state of the internet?

It seems to me they are heading towards being the police force. Who gave them the job? Who gives them the right to judge which paid links are bad, and which are good? We the searchers do. We use their service to search the web.

The trouble is, there's other search engines out there which can give just as good if not better results. If Google annoy people, people will move to different search engines.

Google may well get what they want, but it might be at the cost of everything they have worked so hard for. People will become anti-google, and they will steer well clear of them. And some smart internet marketer will come along and create something even better, and there will be enough people annoyed with Google that they will start using it, and they will tell their friends, they will blog about it. Who will that person be? That's the only question.

The blogosphere is a powerful force, we've all seen that. Buzz can do a lot for a company. Bad buzz can do a lot to hurt a company.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. But I don't think it is a good business decision to p*ss bloggers off. That's my opinion.

Actually this sounds like it could be a Nigerian 419 fake check scam. I've made 5 million in fake checks this year from these guys. ;) They now offer loans as well as jobs that don't exist, too.

Can you email me the number - it was toll free right? I can call that free from Skype, and check it out, see if it is a Nigerian scammer or not.
