in Assorted CPSIA Trifles on The Common Room
Hello. Thank you for the link to the shopping cart article. Clearly, there are varying degrees of risk. Our investigation showed no numbers whatsoever in the most recent year of data of children going to the ER for lead poisoning from toys. We did find that more than 23K did for shopping carts. Despite what is said by your angry commenter, nowhere does our article say that anything should be done or what should be done or that laws should be enacted. It isn't an article of opinion, but a news article. The fact of the matter is that carts resulted in more injuries than many products typically seen as dangerous to small children, including toys with lead paint.

DeputyHeadmistress Kelby, I think we're all more than just a little shell-shocked by the CPSIA.

One thing I would add to the shopping cart article is that a trip to the ER
is not necessarily a good indicator of risk, either. First time parents go
to the ER for just about any thump to the head just to be safe. After a
child or two, parents learn to look for signs of concussion themselves. I
wonder how many of those ER visits ended in the family being sent home with
an 'all clear' verdict, a pat on the head and a list of signs of
concussion.

in Death of Journalism, part 3 (Scripting News) on Scripting News
Great post! I am a former newspaper reporter who ditched that nasty print habit. And I am sooo agreeing on "we could be booting up the next version of journalism." I am doing that right now... see http://investigativemommyblogger.com (1st investigation will hopefully post this week). There will never stop being a need for news... the need for newspapers? Long gone.

in A Bad Family Vacation Might Be Worse Than No Trip at All on Traveling Mamas
Wow, I so relate to what you are saying here... and I definitely DO think a bad vacation is better than being at home any day. Yes, it can suck and be scary and be intense. But travel IS intense. That's part of its appeal.

My daughter got a nasty, really high fever when she was 1 and we were traveling in the South of France. It was a bit scary communicating with a doctor who spoke no English. I did muddle through, but I know what you mean. It is not a warm fuzzy feeling you get when you can't tell a doctor what's wrong with your child. In the end, I was kind of amazed at the experience. One, the doctor made a house call... to a hotel... on a Sunday night... and the total cost was 60 euros! Then he prescribed several drugs. Cost of all three? 5 euros. OK, I digress, but I've kind of been there...

in Can we Bitch Our Way to Change on Chris Brogan
I felt compelled to come back after seeing so many people who think the term "bitchy" is a negative that has to be overcome.

This is a niche social network. People who are offended by the term bitch probably will not use it. What you forget is not EVERYONE thinks bitching, bitchy and bitch mean something negative. Personally, I take great pride in being a bitch. I don't take crap off of people, and I happen to think I can bitch with the best of them. And trust me. When I bitch, things tend to change.

Anyway, I don't think many people pointed out that the term bitchy doesn't HAVE to be a negative or ONLY something said to gain attention. Some of us like the idea of being on a social network for bitching. Just like that, and branded that way. To me, it says in the branding that we aren't going to put up with the crap anymore.

And I'll just say this. When I discovered this site on Twitter and tweeted about it, several people commented about how cool the name was. These are people like me who will connect with that term "bitchy." A good term.

I met @aronado on Twitter too, and when I saw the name of his site in his bio I had to check it out. Then I kicked myself that I didn't think of creating a social network for bitching myself. Anyway, I love this site and I am a big evangelist for it (and no I am NOT on his payroll, I am just a big supporter of cool ideas). Anyway, if this site was only for bitching I would call it fun. But the emphasis on bitching for change is the cool part of this idea. I do hope it takes off.

in Daily SEO Tip - To WWW or not to WWW on newmediaMike
Thanks for covering this! FYI, you can also go into Google's webmaster tools at http://google.com/webmasters , claim your blog, and then you can tell Google whether you prefer with or without www to be considered your site URL.

in Obama: The First President of America 2.0? on There's a Blog in my Soup!
This is excellent! You are absolutely right, and I think the number of Obama followers on Twitter vs. Hillary was very telling. The only issue is I think his Twitter and other accounts should be more personal. I know he probably doesn't have time to send personal messages, but a staff member should do it. For instance, I could see him microblogging on Twitter constantly about where he is and what he's doing.

in Bringing Out the Kid in You - Contest Announcement on Discovering Dad
Hello. What a fun idea for a contest. What brings out the kid in me? Basically, there are two things I do with the kids in which I actually totally forget all that annoying grown up stuff... bills, deadlines... for at least a few minutes. It's singing and dancing (we put on a Laurie Berkner DVD and stomp around) and it's painting/art. It's just impossible to be all serious while you're yelling, "Buzz Buzz" or finger painting.

in 2008/05/11/mothers-day-blogging/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
This is a very nice post. I would like to note, though, that there are some amazing Web 2.0 moms who do so much more than share baby pictures. There are mom SEO experts, mom social networking experts, moms who offer entrepreneurial advice, and moms who are total politicos.

It is true we moms have become quite a sociaizing force, but do remember we are much more than just moms who want to show off pictures and gush about our kids.

in What Moms Really Think About Good Dads on Discovering Dad
This is a wonderful topic! Kudos to everyone for touching on this. I think great dads are hot (I call them DILFs, which I hope is cool with you boys... lol). Anyway, the ladies here already made some wonderful points. But I have a big mouth that I never seem to be able to resist using (even if I type my words).

I sometimes actually take for granted that my husband is a wonderful dad.... until I see one who isn't (and yes, I have heard husbands say they are "babysitting"). Oh, if only I could get them in a dark alley... mmhmm. I think many, many dads today are enjoying a real dad experience. I even see my own dad and my father-in-law, both of whom are great, be very hands off with the grandkids.

Dads today, the good ones, are very hands ON. That is the difference. It's something so simple, but means so much. It's not babysitting for a real man. It's dadhood. Whether that's wiping a butt or playing and romping or doing the dishes so mom can get 5 damn minutes to sit an relax.

Dads actually dad now. They are parents. The ones who think that is weird or somehow less masculine... well, they are the ones who have serious issues.

You dads all rock. I love working dads who have to juggle parenting roles and work places that don't understand about being a dad actively, and I love stay-at-home dads who have to tolerate a lot of people just not getting them. I love me some good dads.
:)

in Contest Giveaway - Win a USATourist.com Travel Toiletry Tote on Traveling Mamas
I plan on doing a LOT more traveling this year, as I finally switched from FullTimeWorkMama to WorkAtHomeMama... :) We just hit Orlando and the whole theme park scene. I will, at the least, do several shorter trips to places around the Southeast, like Charlotte, Atlanta, etc.
