Fact is that content sucks pretty much everywhere these days. It's either a bunch of wannabe actors on fake reality tv or a bunch of wannabe media moguls on blogs. (Present company excluded, of course :-) ) Reality TV or Reality Internet, take your pick. Truth is, if there ever *is* any decent content, the masses will follow. But they won't want to pay for it. But they will have to *buy* something to watch it on. Like an AppleTV, iPhone, etc. oooh....

The Disney Vault was the first thing I thought of too.
"Coming soon, Windows 95. First time out of the Microsoft Vault in 10 years." Except of course, the Microsoft "Vault" probably isn't very secure, so just come on in and help yourself....

I think his point is that SF are looking at the competition being old enterprise software. What happens when a bunch of upstarts start doing the same thing as SF, for a fraction of the price?
Of course, this problem applies to software in general. What happens when there's just nothing interesting to do anymore and it's just a commodity? (And turns into the cell phone industry?)

Funny how the more that the computer industry tries to copy the Utility industry - cloud computing and all that - people start to question whether the Utility model is that great in the first place.
Well, I thought it was an irony anyway :-)

It is a bit ironic, P, how everything old is always new again.
But I don't think that cloud computing neccessarily implies the utility model (although it's lead to the formation of several cloud based utilities, admitedly) because the cloud is just a location. Product can be served from your cloud as easily as from someone else's - even a large utility. So to my way of thinking, this means that on some fundamental level, cloud computing actually turns the utility model obsolete, or at least makes it just one alternative to many.

Nah, the Dali museum is probably closer to El Bulli, and more of a trip for Steve and one of his acid trips. Or just head up to Pac Heights (on one of your Tenderloin jams with Larry?) where the chef at Winterland claims an El Bulli heritage... Which basically means you'll get a brussel sprout and beet mousse in between courses (since nobody would order that as a real dish).

Always hilarious when the blogtards start taking this too seriously...
It's a FAKE BLOG. If you want to read Steve Jobs opinions go read his blog. Tell him to stay out of politics, if you like. If you want real (traditional?) journalism, go read Dan's other stuff.

in Hasbro and Mattel: Dumb, dumb, dumb on Mathew's comments
If they *don't* go after scrabulous, they risk losing their trademark. Thermos. If they do go after them, they're called losers. It wasn't viral marketing when copycat companies tried to sell 'thermos' flasks either. I think you describing copyright theft as "viral marketing" is equally ridiculous. If they really wanted to do that, why didn't THEY approach mattel/hasbro first? Why are the infringers made to look like the good guys here?

"If they *don't* go after scrabulous, they risk losing their trademark."
That may be so where similar products in an identical market are
concerned -- and in any case, it takes a lot longer than a few months
to "lose" a trademark. In any case, that's not what we're talking
about. One is a board game and the other is an online app integrated
into a social networking site. Completely different animals.
It's not copyright theft -- for one thing, it's a trademark, not a
copyright. And it's not theft.
As for posting anonymously, I don't care whether you post anonymously
or not, but I do care whether your argument makes sense or not, and so
far it doesn't.

I'm going to take a BMW and not pay for it. My own personal tribute to BMW. Call it viral marketing. It's not like I have the money to buy a BMW, so there's no harm really because I would never have bought one in the first place.
It's a sad state of affairs when an entity (in this case Mattel/Hasbro) are the losers for sticking up for what's right. Where's the criticism of the other side for doing the wrong thing? The mob mentality of web2.0. ..

Scrabulous is a digital entity, Scrabble is a board game (physical entity). Your analogy falls apart because of that.
No one is saying that Mattel/Hasbro is overstepping their rights or anything. It's just a poor business decision because they look like the monolithic corporation that is too short sighted.

I think it's a sad state of affairs when someone comments on an issue
and uses ridiculous metaphors that have no relationship to what's
being discussed. Trademark and copyright infringement are not theft
-- period. And what constitutes infringement online is still very
much a grey area, which is why we're debating it. If you want to
bring a real argument to the table, I encourage you to do so.

That's a disingenuous argument and you know it. You aren't driving to Mattel headquarters and taking something from them. You aren't even stealing their sales with a clone in the same market.
A somewhat better analogy might be that you have decided to build a BMW driving simulator for the PC without licensing the brand.
Or better yet, you have decided to build BMW-style go-karts for kids in your neighborhood. They caught on fast, so more people started asking for them, and you started painting sponsor logos on the sides of them so that you could afford to continue the project. Somebody from BMW notices, and has you shut down.
Yeah it's within their rights, but it's a bad PR move. They'd be better off negotiating a license in return for turning the whole thing into a TV ad or something.
The real problem isn't right or wrong. It's dumb and smart. Dumb is making Scrabble fans everywhere have conversations like:
Fan A: "What happened to Scrabbulous? I loved that game!"
Fan B: "Mattel sued and had it shut down."
Fan A: "****ers*

Looks like it got swapped out or something. Maybe Steve saw and heard it flew into a rage and then sent Moshe to talk to them.
As a web ad it wasn't bad except that it auto-played with audio when the page opened. In a quiet room it sounded like Bill Mays selling OxyClean. Almost as bad, and I emphasize almost as bad, as a Flash web site with all sorts of bonks, boinks, clanks every time you move the cursor.
Okay I am off my soap box now, well for a while anyway.

It's impossible to debate against conspiracy theories. Faith/Religion is not the issue here - plenty of established Christian religions have no problem accepting the legitimacy of geology, evolution, and other credible science. Perhaps they already realised that it was perfectly OK if the 7 day creation thing was literary hyperbole, and doesn't mean that they had to throw out their entire faith.

But your 2 examples prove his point: the options are either sellout, or depend on somebody else with a useful product. Neither are very sustainable. Sellout is an 'end-game' so by definition is not a sustainable model. Depending on something like Twitterific is horrible too, until lots of other ecosystem things come out of the woodwork and prove that it's something that the Free2.0 crowd are willing to pay for.

Ahh, the joys of the blogosphere. The new source of wisdom and truth. Somebody says it so it *must* be true. "Most scientists don't believe in it...". Don't know whether to laugh or cry. Got any citation for that? Or is something like that too scientific?

Kind of funny, NPR had a story about the influence of religious clerics in Iraq this morning, with a quote something like ... they are very important because some people even live their lives by the political, social and economic advice of the clerics...
Gosh, that would never happen here would it? (No quotes, cause this wasn't the exact wording, but there was definitely an air of surprise that this could be the case.)
I wouldn't go as far as saying they shouldn't be allowed to vote, since most people probably just vote on looks or a quick FOX soundbite anyway, which makes them just as scary. But someone who truly believes the whole 7 day creation, garden of Eden thing truly *IS* a very scary person. Where is the outrage? This is way, way, way more scary than what John Kerry really did on a boat in 'Nam.
