in Action Alert: North Carolina Anti-Municipal Broadband Bill Moved to House Utility Committee on Stop the Cap test
Several of the House didn't even know a thing about this bill or the one in the senate (1004), as of yesterday Alice Bordsen's ( http://www.ncleg.net/gascripts/members/viewMemb... ) office said she hadn't even heard a thing about it but, "would bring it to her attention".

in WHAM Rochester - One Week Ago, Caps Shelved on Stop the Cap test
Yeah, From one in the Triad, allow me to educate everyone again about the plan, and so called "delay". The plan was from the beginning before the "delay" was announced to work like this in the Triad.

Starting now through July TWC would be monitoring the bandwidth usage of people in the 4 "test" cities. Starting in August the customers would be able to monitor their own bandwidth usage. The billing for the metered tiers would then appear on the October bill.

So while they may be calling this a "delay" or that they have decided NOT to continue, there is no proof yet, as their plan all along was going to show NOTHING to the actual consumers until August, or if there is no evidence of how to measure your own bandwidth, customers would notice the plans when their bills come for October.

So there is really no proof yet that TWC has changed ANY of their plans, and could easily be going ahead while they wait to see what happens with the Wilson, NC related bills.

So all other cities, be watchful around those times, as TWC is more than likely still going ahead with monitoring useage now, and look towards August to see if anything appears on any TWC website about checking your bandwidth usage, other than the standard speedtests you can find on some sites.

None of us are out of the woods yet, we just found a temporary clearing and thick underbrush is ahead before we can get back to civilization with this matter.

in Frontier Working My Last Nerve… on Stop the Cap test
Well if you like Frontier customer service so much here is somehting new about RoadRunner. They are doing away with RoadRunner National Help Desk, and ALL RoadRuner services through TWC will be handled by the same customer service people who already don't know how to handle television problems. The first response to any call will be to send a service tech out for repair, and when they find nothing wrong, to tell you your service is working fine, even if you can clearly show your modem not working. This is what I learned and found out after last night my TWC services all went down from 12 midnight until 8am for unannounced planned maintenance. Luckily I was able to contact the head CS supervisor for TWC in the Greensboro, NC service area, Alex Ritter, and placed in touch with another CS supervisor since Alex was busy to handle my complaint about customer service.

So they are removing the RoadRunner techs and replacing the whole RoadRunner help department with regular old people who already may not have a TV to handle your TV service problems, but will be/are completely untrained to handle ANY internet related problems.

in Time Warner: No Tiers, No DOCSIS 3 — Customers: Shucky Darn on Stop the Cap test
Exactly, like the previous video from the Triad stated, that TWC pretty much already has a monopoly and the consumer has no options, so that is why these areas were targetted. So the residential sutomers could shunt the burden of cost for tWC to upgrade the systems, while the business class customers will just get to ride the free meal ticker from those that already have not only ISP through TWC, but also TV (which thanks to DTV more people will more than likely have to get), and also the TWC digital phone service to have less bills coming from multiple places and can just get a trifecta and have a single bill from one service provider. Granted TWC is the only TV and ISP in town that most can acces in the outskirt areas of the Triad, unless you are lucky enough for ClearWire to work for you, but there is still "Ma Bell" for phone service I guess... I think it too big a grab and attempt in light of the DTV that will already grant TWC a lot of new customers if it hasn't already to try to suck even more of what little money people have in this recession out of their pockets. Hopefully the Triad, NY, and TX can do something about this so TWC doesn't comtinue to threaten its customers with lack of technology upgrades, because they don't want to shunt the entire burden of costs for TWC when the revenue for TWC is up 11% and the cost for TWC to offer broadband is down by 12%. :(

Thanks for providing this site and all the info, it has helped making it much easier to find and share with others!

Jeffrey_Bays Why are people even worried about a home phone? Almost every cell provider has UNLIMITED calling for very little.

He also twittered "@netpro2k It doesn't...just that the rollout was scheduled with the trial and now all of it is on hold." http://twitter.com/AlexTWC/status/1580886051 in response to "@AlexTWC Why does DC3 require usage tiering? Why not tier based on speed, ala FIOS? I think people are willing to pay a premium for speed."

Jeffrey_Bays It feels like every time this guy opens his mouth, I want to forcibly cram HIS foot into HIS mouth. The more TW talks with their customers, the more disdain everyone has for them.

We get this "that is not what we meant" from everyone else in the company when we quote the TW goons. If these are their spokes people, maybe they should quit tweeting and blogging and get off their asses and produce some official news. They keep quoting surveys and studies, but never once provide the raw data to back anything up. I hope comments like his land their ass in front of congress. Maybe some blow hard senator will treat them like the A-holes they are. I would kill to be locked in a room with congress to give them a 5 minute power point presentation about what the cable companies are doing. But since I don't have millions of dollars to lobby my ass off, the likelihood of congress hearing what is really going on is none. I read the open letter to John Kerry, and most of that letter was Bull. If this is the only thing they see, the consumers in most markets will be screwed.
Phillip Dampier It seems patently obvious that unless you said Yes to usage based pricing, there are no upgrades in your future. Why bother when lack of competition already makes it a safe bet most of your customers aren't going anywhere, hence the experiment in "safe" places.

in WGHP Greensboro - Greensboro to Time Warner: “This is Not Fair; It’s Bordering on a Monopoly” on Stop the Cap test
What is there that the city council can't do? Does the city council not have any control in what business the allow to operate within the area? Can the city not revoke the right of TWC to do business in the city of Greensboro, and the surrounding Triad cities, also, disallow TWC to do busines within their cities as well. That would pretty much shut down TWC operations, and show how important this cap issue is to both the cities, and the consumers. Clearwire isn't the best alternative, but it is available here in the Triad and $20 cheaper than Road Runner. I also find it funny how it is always neglected that the tiered caps ONLY affect residential users, while Business class customers of TWC will not be capped at all, and probably can account for nearly half of the bandwidth usage within the Triad from all the colleges that have no option but to use TWC services for the most part.

Why are only residential customers getting capped? These are already the ones that use the TV services as well, so probably spend more money en masse for TWC services than businesses, so maybe the business custoemrs need to shelter some of the so-called burden of the cost to upgrade the technologies, were TWC-GSBO already has had poor quality since digital services came and haven't been able to upgrade the hardware for nearly a decade to where it even works correctly in large parts of the Triad.

in How to install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire One with 8GB SSD on Liliputing
Jesus christ this thing can hardly run xp, I had to install the lightest linux i could find to even make it useable.

The 8gb SSD is a scam , most people spend money and get an external usb drive and use it as the main drive, or mod it to use CF card instead of the stupid 8gb ssd

I hear its better to get an 8gb memory stick and install xp as RAID

I installed W7 (lite-version) on my 8GB SSD. Runs fine, takes only 5,5 GB. Only problem: some programs (eg. Itunes) will simply not install. Others (Adobe Lightroom, MediaMonkey) run without any issues. Visual candy (Aero peek etc.) is no problem either.
I had enough of Linux-related issues (plenty of crashes, hardware problems).

in Don’t Mess with Texas on America's Tea Party
Fine. Please return all border guards, fencing etc. you aren't paying for ASAP. Oh also any Medicare and Education funding in excess of your own tax base. Darnit, didn't the Civil War settle the issue of state's rights once and for all? You're either with us or against us, as a Texan once said.
Todd Kading Greg,
The Civil War did not settle this. It settled that states could not unilaterally leave the Union; however, it did not nullify the 10th Amendment to the Constitution. If you don't agree with the Constitution or its Amendments, then you need to work to get it amended through the political process. What has happened is that politicians have simply ignored that it exists. The time has come where there are enough Americans willing to stand up and say that the Federal Government has trampled the foundations of the Constitution and it must stop. I am sorry if this upsets you. As for returning funding that did not come from Texas citizens, great. Let's do that. And let's have every other state return the funding that didn't come from its citizens. If we did that, then we would not be in hock to the Chinese Communists and the Fed would also stop printing money. The bailouts would stop, and the government would shrink to half its current size. This would be one of the greatest things for Freedom and Liberty in the history of our nation.
Take care.
Nick The Civil War 'settled' the issue by the racist tyrant Abe Lincoln provoking a conflict that killed 600,000 Americans.

Medicare and the Dept. of Education should be abolished, along with the other ~ 90% of the entire federal bureaucracy which is blatantly unconstitutional.

in Pakistan: Muslim men who gang-raped a 13 year-old Christian girl are declared “innocent” on Infidels Are Cool
Let's just put it this way folks....

IF, and I mean IF, the so-called "moderate Muslims" would actually stand up and state the fact that they are "peaceful" and "loving" people and absolutely lambaste the extremists... then and ONLY then... would any argument that Muslims are a "good and peaceful people" even hold any water!!! But, until that time... your silence is your opinion... and to me (and A LOT of others) it simply means that you agree.

Put that in your turban and smoke it!

in Thursday Evening News Briefs on Stop the Cap test
The thing is here Greensboro, NC is not just GSO, but the entire Piedmont-Triad that Greensboro services. It seems they are trying to go back to the days of AOL and some attempt at getting hourly usage rates. One of the things people moved to broadband and RoadRunner to get away from. Other than UNC-G there is also Elon College, the town and the college itself; that this will affect, and I am sure there are a few others including but not limited to Alamance Community College in the area that have little to no choice for any other service. TWC has a monopoly in this area for service due to many local governments not wanting to upgrade technologies to allow for other services. So basically all the area are Greensboro, NC will be affected with nothing much else to do but pay or no longer use the internet. Of course, this pricing plan change only affects residential users, while business accounts will not be bothered by it at all. Which is another sting in the matter, where businesses are probably using it more from all the internet cafes, and wi-fi access points that use TWC. So why are they exempt from being included, and only home users in this time of economic crisis? They tried this once before years ago with a failed attempt at a gamer rate of about 40 gigs for $100 a month, and it didn't work then, so why do they think it will work now? I think another component in this is that many people may have to switch to cable TV services after the DTV changes this year, so TWC is trying to sucker people into getting internet and milk the governments DTV initiative for everything they can while the people themselves suffer. So while you need some kind of TV service, they will try to sell you these locked in rates and other thing for internet services and try to make as much money as possible for the poor quality services that the Greensboro area provides.

For 20+ I haven't had to go a month without calling TWC about a problem. and it only got worse after digital TV services came along and Node 8 out of Mebane, NC from GSO taking over 10 years to get fixed, and they still have leaked signals and not enough power to send to their customers from when they started. The outlying areas that Greensboro services already have poorer quality signals for all things provided by TWC, and now they have to pay more for the signal degradation because it will take restarting thing online over and over just to get it once. But again, business accounts are unaffected by this, and the poor quality signals shared by both types of accounts, will only be charged more for the residential customers.

So when people think about Greensboro itself in this also, please remember it is about 100,000 people, or more, outside of the city itself and in other cities, that will be affected by this.

So that includes at least part of Orange County, and north and maybe as far over as Yadkin County and down to Randolf County are included in the Greensboro, NC TWC service area.

I congratulate Austin Police Department (APD) in successfully bringing the issue to a safe close, but their public dissemination of status was very disappointing. I live extremely close to the house where the incident occurred and could not get any helpful information from 911 or 311 who in turned connected me to APD. I had no idea if there was a fugitive running through the neighborhood versus someone holed up in a house, and regardless of repeated calls to ascertain if the situation was over I couldn't get anyone to tell me anything. I had to call friends and find the story on TV to get any information. That's ridiculous. Despite requesting to be contacted either by an officer at the door or by phone, no one ever signaled me an "all clear". APD needs to put a process in place to address this.
