My second hobby this winter is shoveling. Husband and I fight to see who gets the honor of shoveling our driveway. For us, it is a special time outside, i-pod full of good music, a full body workout and the feeling of fierceness that connects me to my hearty ancestors. Plus, I get to cover myself in my hand knit wool, because as the saying goes, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.

High point - dying wool with koolaid with my kids, low point - hasn't happened yet!

Interesting read, Chris. I will admit that I don't usually hit the 5 year mark, in the past it is because I settled for jobs that I could do, not that challenged me or that I would grow with. I now work in a place where 75% of the people have been here for 20 years or more, doing the same job. They have lost the ability to learn new things, to keep up with outside forces and become obstacles to getting the job done.

I grabbed #27, although I'm not sure I answered properly, I mean, I don't speak for all women, ya know?

I dropped by to review some of your notes on attending conferences but have been sidetracked by this post. So while I am going into a relatively new fishbowl next weekend, in between then I am going to be doing some educating.

On Thursday, I will be co-teaching a class on podcasting, blogs and wikis to public school teachers from rural Vermont. I'm going to focus on finding podcasts that match individual interests, and using Audacity to create new ones in a class setting. The focus can't be on the technology, it must be on the content. Then the question becomes not, how do I do this, but how do I use the content available to tell an interesting and relevent story.

(btw, I'd love to hear from your readers what they think are your best posts getting the most out of attending conferences)

damn, I read this early today and meant to come back to it, but the day is over and I'm not going to make it to one item on the list.

I'm a sucker for stone walls in New England and have been following the snow melt around my neighborhood, this was fantastic. Thanks for sharing.

About 2 years ago, I got tired of living the life I felt I was living by default - you know the choices you end up with because you didn't think ahead and made the safest choices at the time.

I went back to grad school, got the job I've always wanted to do, in a community I always hoped to be able to live in. It was so empowering, and yet there are still things I do by default, behaviors I don't question or challenge and there always will be. Thanks for the reminder.

I was creating a second account in SL in one window while I was reading your post in another. I joined last year and stumbled around a bit. I attended a cool conference, but never got the hang of the controls. I created a work friendly account today to see how other colleges and universities are using it.

Thanks for posting this. For many Web 2.0 users, this information has become part of the cultural ethos, but I now live in a pre y2k valley, and I'm going to have to resist the urge to show this to everyone I run into who hasn't encountered the shift yet.
