As I get a lot of image feeds from Flickr, it is not ideal for me to work in the standard 3 pane mode offered by most readers. I much prefer the two pane newspaper style, like Bloglines has. GreatNews is the only desktop aggregator I know of that supports this, and what's more supports it better than BlogLines. The pages load more quickly (because you can set your preferred page length) and the silly 200 unread item limit that Bloglines has is just a memory. Furthermore it's small and self-contained. After installing it I simply copied the whole install folder to my USB thumb drive and can run the same copy from home, work or wherever else I happen to get on the net. Oh and the other nice feature of GreatNews? Like Bloglines, it's free.

Re: self study ten: the longest five minutes

I know that feeling well.

Re: untimely destruction

That sucks, hope you haven't lost too much. As far as I'm concerned, automated backup software should only ever move data in one direction; it should never update the master copy. Anything that does a two way sync should only run under my control.

Re: my bag baby

I have a backpack (Lowepro Rover Plus AW) that has space for both camera gear and other stuff like jacket, lunch, etc., but I rarely use it. It's fine if it will be a longish walk to a spot followed by a period of photography from a single location, say an airshow, but for my usual style of photography I prefer to walk around and like to have easy access for lens changes. A backpack is no good for this so I used a shoulder bag (Tamrac Superlight 44) that allowed me access to everything on the move. It was a little small though and although I could fit my body, lenses and all the little accessories in it there wasn't space for my flash. More problematic though was the fact that the bag was quite heavy and having it hanging from my shoulder was literally a pain in the neck.

I recently bought a new bag that provides the best of both worlds. It is a Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW that has a single strap across your body and can be swung onto your back as a backpack or around to your side/front allowing you access to equipment without having to take the pack off and lay it on the ground to open. The 300 is the biggest and has plenty of space for carrying my body with any of my lenses mounted, all my other lenses and my flash. There are smaller 100 and 200 versions and I could probably have got away with the 200 but was tired of the continual fight for space I had with the shoulder bag.

Re: I'm Up!

I'm up but that's not too surprising as it's just gone 1pm here.

Re: Looking for a digicam

If I was to choose any non-SLR digicam right now it would be the Epson R-D1. I have one of these and while it isn't top quality glass it is affordable and a fair choice as a single lens for an entry level user.

Re: Colour your updates

I kicked Bloglines about two months ago and have been using GreatNews since. It works pretty well and met two of my requirements, portability (it runs off my thumb drive) and has the report or newspaper view I prefer. Now I am intrigued by Newzie, which is certainly a great looking application. I think I'll try it for a while and see how it suits me. I already have one minor but majorly frustrating issue with it, the report window doesn't scroll with my mouse wheel.

Re: Colour your updates

I will try playing with Newzie over the weekend as I like the look of the interface. But I'm still using GreatNews as my "production" aggregator today. Newzie will probably be an acquired taste.

Re: MacBook Pro Diaries #002: Spotlight, Terminals and Photoshop

As a RawShooter Premium owner I get a freebie of the Windows version of Aperture when it ships. Why is this? I use KeePass Password Safe and have it generate nice cryptic passwords for me. The default length was 16 characters and I have never seen a need to change that. What seems to happen is that some sites restrict password lengths to some number, often ten, and rather than warning you that your chosen password exceeds this, they simply truncate it. It is quite amazing how many sites do this.

Re: Baby Watson on the way

Congratulations Paul.

Re: Welcome to Earth

Congratulations Paul.

Re: It’s Zach Braff’s birthday

Zack Braff is great, but so is Jason Bateman, so it should be a good movie.

Re: It’s Zach Braff’s birthday

Zack Braff is great, but so is Jason Bateman, so it should be a good movie.

Re: It’s Zach Braff’s birthday

Zack Braff is great, but so is Jason Bateman, so it should be a good movie.

Re: F-22 stealth fighter creates its own clouds

Here's a proudly South African example that I took at AAD 2006.

Re: F-22 stealth fighter creates its own clouds

Here's a proudly South African example that I took at AAD 2006.

Re: Afrigator goes Mobile… and then some

Cool.
