in Charles Alexander, Born 1922, Meets Obama on Jack and Jill Politics
Mr. Alexander is 9 months younger than my father, who died 9/2001.

My father was a white, middle class California -- mostly voting Republican, but he died before the big Republican shift hard right. I so wonder what my father would have thought and done in this election. I believe that he would have supported McCain 2000, and perceived the difference between McCain 2000 & McCain 2008 -- and voted accordingly.

Of course this is all wishful thinking.

As a white person, I can only imagine what Obama's campaign means to African-Americans, especially those of my parents' generation (born in 1920-1930)

My daughter, aged 19, is voting for the first time in this election (absentee ballot, because she's out of state for college).

Nate_Wesley I truly believe that Barack Obama is a man who will unify people. I'm not talking about some kum-bay-yah, 'We are the world' type naivety--I think he really has what it takes to bring HEALTHY discourse back to politics and yet bring citizens back to a cooperative community that wants to do for country like JFK described.

I just don't see real unity happening with a McCain presidency, and that's leaving out whatever disappointment would be felt by African-Americans.

After much planning and preparing, Capitol Resource Institute proudly announces the formation of Capitol Resource Family Impact, a new affiliated organization dedicated to advocating for family values throughout California. Throughout our 20 year history, CRI has faithfully defended family values in the capitol. As a C(3) non-profit, we recognize the limitations this places on our group when it comes to advocating for families in many other areas. For this reason, CRI decided to found a C(4) so that we will be able to advance the pro-family movement in a variety of new ways.

Karoli Liz, they're funded by groups like the Beverly LaHaye group, who are so virulently homophobic it literally turns my stomach. I'm sure the Dobson group is in there, too.

And yet, even with all the ugly, many of the kids are the ones with the good sense to know what is really right. Over 1,000 of them turned out for a peace/tolerance rally in Larry King's honor yesterday. In this neck of the woods, that's unprecedented.

Even more encouraging: The school officials were there in support of the kids, too.

The anti-gay Sacramento-based Capitol Resource Family Institute issued a warning to its members that Schwarzenegger's signing of SB777 by out lesbian Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) will open "female locker rooms to transgender men."

"We are shocked and appalled that the governor has blatantly attacked traditional family values in California," wrote Karen England, the institute's executive director, in the e-mail. "With this decision, Governor Schwarzenegger has told parents that their values are irrelevant. Many parents will have no choice but to pull their children out of the public schools that have now become sexualized indoctrination centers."

England went on to state that "School boys have always made excuses to get into girls locker rooms – now they won't need any because it will be a state-sanctioned policy."

The institute has submitted paperwork with Attorney General Jerry Brown's office so it can begin collecting signatures to place a repeal of the bill on next year's ballot. Once Brown gives it a title, the petitioners will have 150 days to circulate petitions and collect 433,971 valid voter signatures in order to qualify the referendum.

short answer: yes -- until he leaves home & realizes how much you do for him.

Plus late-adolescent boys (esp. ADHDers) have this grunting down to a fine art.

And I hate to tell you -- the more you resent it, the more they do it.

The more blithe you are, the more they communicate.

Karoli I've heard that the furor is dying down over this, but to me, being investigated by the AG and local police because of an anonymous 'tip' is the dangerous part of this story. The AG's office of cybercrimes has some smart folks in it who will surely understand the situation, but based upon what we saw in Julie Amero's case, I don't think we can have the same confidence in the local police anywhere.

What possessed this parent to go to the newspaper instead of simply confronting this officer and the principal about what had happened? What was their goal? Were they hoping to embarrass the school? the officer?

The real villain in this particular piece (just as in the Nate Fisher and Julie Amero case) is the hysterical parent who is too ignorant to understand how MySpace works and immediately assumed the officer had done something wrong.

I would have spun on my heel & walked out. Politics do not belong in the church.

As far as the theology of homosexuality, you may wish to share this:

http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2007/12/19/1166

"What's Morally Wrong with Homosexuality"

I already knew that John Corvino was really onto something with his latest DVD offering. That title — “What’s Morally Wrong With Homosexuality?” — challenges us to confront one of our most glaring problems in the debates over homosexuality today. It’s the idea that the word “morality” is automatically associated with anti-gay positions. In fact, in today’s cultural debates, all one has to do us utter the words “moral” or “morality,” and right away he has signaled that that every word that follows will be hostile to gays and lesbians.

Karoli Liz, that was a great link. I've bookmarked that and will come back to it. Thank you.

I know I haven't really talked much here about being Christian, and I realized that's because I didn't want to be associated with the perception of what most think Christians are. But I do plan to talk more about the principles in this book and why it's so important that Christians start behaving the way they're supposed to instead of the way they are, because if I continue to remain silent, I'm just enabling the shrill whine to continue with no counterpoint.

Liz Ditz here, I haven't signed into your new commenting software.

Karoli, just to make your blood pressure rise

Carpetbagger Report covers the religious right's response to this tragedy. As you might expect, it is the liberal's fault.

Religious Right Exploits Tragedy for Political Gain

"Yesterday, the Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins blamed the “secular media” for Matthew Murray’s shooting rampage in Colorado"

and, quoting Gary Bauer:

"Second, despite his upbringing, he was clearly motivated by an intense hatred for Christians, just as the Virginia Tech murderer was. In his last online message, Murray reportedly wrote, “You Christians brought this on yourselves. All I want to do is kill and injure as many of you as I can especially Christians who are to blame for most of the problems in the world.” It is worth noting that this hatred of Christians is constantly promoted by the radical Left - on their websites and in their books, articles etc."

Gah. That's me gagging up here.

Karoli Hi Liz,

No worries, you don't have to sign in to comment. It just remembers you if you sign in. :)

As for my blood pressure, if I keep seeing articles like this they're going to have to put me on meds. Seriously.

What bothers me the most about this (and Tony Perkins is one of the current worst, BTW) is the complete knee-jerk response with an absence of thought, consideration, or basic research. And yes, it also bothers me that it's entirely political. If the fundamentals were to take a biblical approach on this, they'd be absolutely apolitical. After all, Jesus said "do as the Romans do", not "become a Roman".

These guys use Christianity to garner power for themselves. It is not a question of evangelism, or altruism. It's all about forcing others to their point of view. And it drives me nuts.

This whole story is nothing but tragic. He was clearly mentally ill five years ago, but was not directed toward treatment, just turned away from his community.

I do not know the theology of these two groups, but they may not accept mental illness, viewing these behaviors as "possession" or the like.

Via Box Turtle Bulletin

CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/12/10/shooter.youth/...

Matthew Murray was kicked out of a missionary training program five years ago for strange behavior, and talked about hearing voices, according to a man who served at the center with him.
[snip]
Richard Werner, 34, said Monday he was a worker at the center in Arvada, Colorado, in 2002, the same time as Murray.

He said Murray was told in December 2002 he would not be allowed to join a mission trip to Bosnia. That was five days after Murray performed a pair of dark rock songs at a concert at the mission that made fellow workers "pretty scared," according to Werner.

The performance -- which included a song by rock band Linkin Park and another that had been recorded by controversial rocker Marilyn Manson -- followed months of strange behavior, Werner said.

Werner, of Balneario Camborius, Brazil, said he had a bunk near Murray's and that Murray would roll around in bed and make noises.

"He would say, 'Don't worry, I'm just talking to the voices,' " Werner said. "He'd say, 'Don't worry, Richard. You're a nice guy. The voices like you.' "
