in Cooking Adventures on tychoishOddly enough, I can't at all picture what your finished recipe would look like, nor what it would taste like. Although, I am a big fan of putting in a cider vinegar or interesting rice vinegar into a soup or sauce toward the end of cooking...it adds incredibly depth of flavor...I also like throwing in a fresh, leafy herb at the end, like a sharp parsley or cilantro.
Despite lunch and two pieces of cake today, now you've made me hungry!

in Sapir Whorf Hypothesis and Computer Programing on tychoishI have trouble wrapping my head around this concept...I mean we're limited in everything we do by the tools and materials available to us.
Would I say my knitting creativity was limited by the types of yarns that are made...or at a lower level, the language of knitting patterns?
Is my writing talented stunted by the limited pool of words there are?
Personally, the first time I ever exhibited any creativity at all was in adapting programming languages to do what I needed them to do...coming up with wildly creative solutions to a highly limiting software.
So...yes, I guess there is a certain limitation to programming languages, and perhaps there are some languages that have a way of encouraging more free expression than others, but I think creativity includes the ability to think outside the inherent limitations.
Another fascinating topic that has my brain aching.

in mcabber and IM on tychoishI don't do IM chat anymore, but when I did, I found one of my biggest issues was that I was always switching between different client networks, and the firewalls on one were completely different than the firewalls on others.
I found I had to go with a web-based IM consolidator that avoided all the firewall hassles, and usually used meebo.com. It displays each IM software in its own format, but I kind of liked that so I knew if something was coming from an MSN friend versus an AIM friend.

in Half Million on tychoishI'm just about to hit my 1,000th blog entry (probably the week after next), but I have NO idea how many words I've written.
If your comments count toward the word count, you can count on me to be verbose...I've got LOTS of crap to get through till I reach the good stuff.

in git Collaboration on tychoishFirst of all...not to put any kanahara (sp?) on it, but I'll look forward to this oral presentation of your writing.
The git platform seems intriguing as well...I need to go check it out and see what kind of workflow it offers as well.

in A Cowl–(Knittting) on tychoishWow...a man's cowl...sounds like fun. My mind would have gone to something more boring and traditional, like a balaclava or maybe a earflap hat.
Just one correction...I've made socks with Noro Kureyon Sock...I didn't even know that there was a sockweight in Silk Garden...now I'm going to have go find me some.

in Carly Simon is creepy……..! on sean808080's ohmbaseMy bet is that Carly Simon is one of those incredibly emotionally needy people that can't stand when the attention isn't on her all the time.

in Writing Gay Characters on tychoishDo you think a writer without any experience of being gay could write a gay character? Could someone really put himself or herself into my shoes to write someone that could react I as I would...feel internally like I do...emote like I would? Then again, could a gay man write a gay character that I found genuine or would his experience require him to overwrite the character?
From a reader's perspective, I am always evaluating gay characters to see how real they are in my experience.
I was glad to chance onto this entry of your blog...it gave me the experience of trying to look at the back of my own eyeball and took me to an interesting place.

in Reasons Why the Ale Was Amazing on tychoishI don't get Morris Dance...I definitely don't get note shape shifting or whatever you called it.
But I was more than glad to get a sense about how significant an event this was for you. Thanks for conveying that.

in Now, Six on tychoishI'm glad to hear about another spinner who doesn't Navajo ply well. I have tried it a couple of times, and despite the fact that I picked up spinning extremely quickly, I cannot do a decent Navajo.
I'm not sure if it's my being defensive, but I've come up with a method of plying excellent looking two and three ply yarns without any leftover singles...that's good enough for me.

in Pseudonym on tychoishI love the term "pseudonymity." As part of my blog writing, I have pissed off some folks. One reader went so far as to do a search on the name of a college buddy I mentioned I used to smoke pot with, and sent a letter to his employer with a link to my reference.
Fortunately, the reader found a different person with that name, and I had to remove my friend's name from the listing.
I was grateful, in a way, in that I could see how nasty folks could be outside the umbrella of pseudonymity.

in Other Sport Sweaters on tychoishThe new fit is much nicer. I love how much thought and experimentation you put into your shaping. I'd be interested to read more about your short-row shaping for stopping the back from riding up.
Does this the split-neck opening look good with just a t-shirt underneath or does the looser opening require a collared shirt?

in Computer Troubles(?) on tychoishI do have to say that my methodology for picking out a new laptop is very similar to yours, although the specifics of what I look for in a computer are completely different than yours.

Is the monitor big enough/clear enough/bright enough for 48 year old eyes?

Will the graphics card handle a refresh of 1200 blog photo thumbnails quickly enough?

Will the color of the casing match my home office decor?

You know...important things like that.

in Five Knitting Memes That I Still Don’t Get on tychoishWhat's wrong with JayWalker socks?
James (from New Zealand) was just knitting a pair at my house this past weekend, and they looked quite lovely.
Or do you just find Jaywalking to be an unacceptable crime in any circumstance...including sockknitting?

in Geek Speak on tychoishDear Blog Person,
Please advise exactly what language you are writing your blog entries in so that I may do an AltaVista-Babelfish translation of said blog entries.
Thank you in advance for your kind assistance,

in Observations for 30 October 2007 on tychoishI find I understand about 80% of what I read on your blog. Much of the technology component of what you write about is completely over my head (not a very high head to go over when it comes to technology). And there are other topics you write about that I don't even know the topic. And yet still, I love reading your blog, and every time the RSS feed hits Ravelry, I race to read it.
It shocks me that folks don't swarm to your blog in droves, but then if they did, I probably wouldn't find your writing anywhere near as interesting. Such a John Waters thing to say.

in Red Sweater of Doom on tychoishIf I had any say in what you worked on, I would force you to work on the fine-gauge gray sweater. That will look spectacular, and probably feel great to wear.
Just think about it...anyone seeing you wearing it will want to paw you (as if they don't already want to do that).
