He was consistently in the 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 range; Now he is consistently in the 2,000,000 to 2,500,000 range.

Thats not to say Olbermann is doing overly well. He certainly is getting more daily results exceeding 1,000,000 than ever, but his ratings have flattened out since March 4.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

That sucks.

There was a whole article about them when they were starting out a year ago in the Philly Inquirer...they are local out of King of Prussia. Awesome service - have to request a login and get invited. They record everything that is anything, and its LOCAL TOO! Just select your city and you can watch tv and radio recorded from your area.

I think that this has more to do with relation to SPORTING EVENTS than with mundane news broadcasts. I find it interesting that the three networks in question are the ones who broadcast NFL football during the regular season...they are very sensitive to the intellectual property rights of NFL broadcasts.

Re: Another Look at the 30 Rock News Outlets - TVNewser

It is quite a joke. FNC is clearly biased toward the right...yet they get a pass, this of course is because every other media outlet out there is rather conservative too: ABC, CBS, HLN, CNN, WSJ, etc. etc. etc. And no conservative outlet is going to moat a fellow conservative outlet.
Yet when a liberal starts stepping out from the pack they get buried for being "liberal"...oooooooh liberals, they are going to harm everyone you know, run away!!! *sigh* It happens all the time - in my district's election, PA-06, Lois Murphy has lost each time by 1-2% (2004 and 2006) and each time I think it can be attributed to the fear tactic used by Jim Gerlach that calls Lois a liberal, calling her "Liberal Lois". *sigh*.

Basically, we who like the liberal slant of MSNBC just need to keep feeding them ratings, be it through Olbermann, Matthews (though he is a right-wing tool, he certainly is more left than anyone at FNC), and Abrams, though giving Olbermann ratings would be the best way since he is the most left-leaning and the most critical. I dont think NBC will can the left-slanting reporters if they are raking in the ratings (and thus the advertising cash).

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

Can someone please give the memo to NBC to make just one airing of Hardball pre-8PM and create another show with Rachel Maddow? It is kinda stupid to show the live at 5PM then show the reair at 7.

I say, push the junky David Gregory hour to the 5PM slot (since that will of course cease to exist past November), make the live Hardball episode at 7PM, and give Rachel maddow 6PM. Ratings will soar. You will get much higher numbers in the 7PM slot, because there are a lot of people who are home to see the 5PM hardball who have no issue watching the 7PM reair, and 6PM will be much higher because people are just pining for a Rachel Maddow show.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

@The Liberal Superhero: I dont think anyone likes watching her speak...with that side-mouth speech and all. Couple that with her annoying voice and bad ratings are sure to follow :-D.

Ive been tracking the Olbermann vs O'Reilly's rankings from this site since the day they started publishing the Total Viewers...
Both O'Reilly and Olbermann have upward trends in the Total Viewers, and as of the past couple months has Olbermann's upward trend has eclipsed O'Reilly's. Heck if you look at just the last couple months O'Reilly has been on a downward trend.
Both O'Reilly and Olbermann have upward trends in the A24-54 demo, the trends are not as significant as the Total viewers trends (mostly because of the ratio between the numbers... 4:1 ratio). However for the longest time O'Reilly had either a slightly larger trend or the same trend as Olbermann's. But as of recent (last 2-3 months I guess?) Olbermann's upward trend has eclipsed by O'Reilly's. I would not be surprised to see Olbermann overtake O'Reilly for GOOD in the demo by the end of the year. He has a longggg ways to go to catch O'Reilly in the Total Viewers category, unfortunately.

On a side, Hardball's numbers are a pleasant surprise too...as are Abrams.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

Since TvNewser started providing Total Viewer ratings (8/20/07):

Total Viewer ratings trend:
O'Reilly: +2.235x (this is just the slope of the regression line of all the data)
Olbermann: +1.945x

A25-54 ratings trend:
O'Reilly: +0.334x
Olbermann: +0.649x

Notice the difference in A25-54 ratings trends. On my chart, the A25-54 trend lines appear to be passing through (for Wednesday) about 510 for O'Reilly and about 380. If you use those current slopes and assume a constant slope (though every day the slope changes as I add a new data point) it would appear that an A25-54 takeover won't occur until next year.

HOWEVER, if you just look at 2008 alone the numbers change drastically:

Total Viewer ratings trend:
O'Reilly: -3.994x
Olbermann: +1.425x

A25-54 ratings trend:
O'Reilly: -0.928x
Olbermann: +0.279x

Both O'Reilly numbers are on the downslope while both Olbermann numbers are on the upslope (again, for 2008 ALONE). And according to this model, Olbermann will overtake O'Reilly in the A25-54 demo by the end of August. Again, this assumes constant trends however the trends change everyday a new data point.

It is also worth noting that I do not take into account vacations. So both sets of data include days when O'Reilly is on vacation and days when Olbermann is on vacation...I really don't feel like going back to determine when either personality was on vacation to remove certain data points. It is worth noting that when Rachel Maddow fills in Olbermann's ratings really don't take that much of a hit anyway (as evidenced by her most recent stand-in).

Personally, I expect O'Reilly's numbers to flat-line (in both categories, Total and A25-54). In the case of Total viewers that puts him in the constant 2,000,000-2,500,000 range, which is a ways away for countdown, possibly another year and a half away...who knows?
However with the A25-54 demo that would be a flat-line of 500,000, a number I expect Olbermann to routinely surpass by the end of the year, or sooner, given his current (and constant) upward trend.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

Because the right-wing counterpart of this site (InsideCableNews) went down...to never return. These three channels pay BILLIONS for sports broadcasting...NFL (CBS/NBC/FOX), MLB (FOX), NHL (NBC), Horse Racing (NBC), NASCAR (FOX), Olympics (NBC), NCAA Basketball (CBS), everything college (shown on CSTV, owned by CBS), Golf (CBS), etc.
I am surprised that ABC wasn't included since they pay a lot to show NBA, College Basketball, College Football and Monday Night Football.

Then again, maybe its not related to sport, but I just find it somewhat strange that only these THREE networks came out and complained. RedLasso records several different TV and Radio stations in multiple media markets from multiple companies (CNN+HLN is Turner, ABC+ESPN+ESPN2 is Disney, Comedy Central is Viacom, Bloomberg is Bloomberg L.P., E!+CN8+SNY+CSN is Comcast, Food Network is E.W. Scripps, MSG is MSG Entertainment) and we haven't heard a word from any of those companies and RedLasso has been around for a while.

I just honestly can't think that NBC, FOX, and CBS are trying to protect their news programs or original television sitcoms/soaps/dramas/etc. All of their exclusive programming can be viewed FOR FREE on their own websites or HULU...even local news you can find on the websites created for those broadcasts. When I first heard about the C&D letter the first thing I thought was "they are trying to protect the broadcast rights to sports, particularly NFL".

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

sorry, i am not of the faith which are supposed to believe in the Easter Bunny or Santa.

I find it particularly interesting that you dont even agree with me on my assessment of the A25-54 demo. If you look at the ratings from Jan-Feb, sure, it would look like Olbermann would never catch O'Reilly with BO doubling KO in the A25-54 demo. But now? KO is only losing to BO nightly by 10-20% (of BO's number) or less. The trend is so strong that its impossible to think KO won't catch BO in the A25-54 demo.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

Nah, neither 9PM or 10PM is for Rachel.

Rachel should either be in the 7PM slot which currently is a REBROADCAST of Hardball which showed only 2 hours earlier, or at 6PM (David Gregory is nothing more than a sideline reporter, besides the fact that his show is called "RACE TO THE WHITE HOUSE", meaning come November 6th his show is obsolete).

My dream MSNBC lineup is:
5PM - either Shuster (who is getting a show at 4PM) or Gregory with his worthless show
6PM - Hardball
7PM - Maddow
8PM - Countdown
9PM - Verdict (ON EVERY NIGHT, not just M-Th)

6PM would be perfect for Hardball. I dont understand the reasoning behind why Hardball repeats 2 hours after is airs, but 6PM would be a perfect compromise for the two hours. If you look at the numbers from Wednesday, 912/289 and 713/197 (Total/25-54), the aggregate (1625/486) is enough to beat all FNC programming except O'Reilly in the A25-54 demo, and all except O'Reilly and H&C in the Total. Might as well put that in a time slot to get maximize the potential from both the current time slots, 5 and 7PM, and be on par with the FNC programming at that hour, the insufferable Brit Hume. Hume needs a ratings wakeup call as he has been on the pedestal for far too long.

And with all the buzz Maddow has been generating I think she could pluck off the annoying Shep at 7PM...yuck.

Then instead of putting Gregory in the 11PM timeslot for a reair, which performs terribly against the O'Reilly reair, put the Hardball reair there, which will certainly perform better.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

I am pleased by the number, but I realize that it is an aberration because the show was dedicated to an interview with Scott McClellan which I'm sure people were eager to see (since it was our liberal hero interviewing him). So I ask again, who is Rachel Haimowitz and what are her credentials with regard to politics?

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

This should be a shock considering CNN has been around longer than MSNBC and FNC combined (FNC is 10.5 years, launched 10/96, MSNBC is 11 years, launched 7/96. CNN is 28 years, launched 6/80). I think CNN stood with the old ways too long and got burned. I really didnt start watching cable news seriously until a year or two ago, so maybe I am wrong, but I do recall something saying that it was FNC that pioneered political opinion show-type which really took off.

I think in today's world of partisanship, it pays to make your bias clear. Conservatives feel at home with FNC just as liberals feel at home with MSNBC. Kinda leaves CNN out.
I think it also pays to have a lineup of shows where at least the bias is rather consistent. 6PM thru 10PM is all liberal on MSNBC, while 6PM thru 10PM is all conservative on FNC. CNN, though, is all over the place...you got Blitzer accompanied by Cafferty which makes the show rather liberal, followed by the conservative Dobbs, followed by who-knows-what with Campbell Brown, followed by Larry King who really does not come off as having a "political show", followed by Anderson Cooper who I guess comes off as more liberal because of his coverage of Iraq.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

Personally, I think KO is succeeding in drawing better A25-54 demo numbers as of recent, as well as nipping the toes of BO's dropping A25-54 demo numbers, is because his show makes it very easy for young viewers to enjoy.

The "countdown" layout for the show makes it easy for people to know when news bit start and stop and how far along they are in the show without looking at a clock. It also makes for easy clipping at RedLasso and YouTube.
The Worst Persons in the World and Best Persons in the World segments are also very good as they are quick lineups which are meant to either poke fun at or expose people based on their actions - its the kind of information you woulde see in the list of headlines at a news website.
Also, in a TV world where the young audience prefer comedic news in the form of the Daily Show or the Colbert Report, it only behooves the producers (and the hosts) of these more "serious" shows on MSNBC, FNC and CNN to make the content "comical", and Olbermann does a very good job of that. I think Dobbs, Beck and O'Reilly just get too serious for the younger viewers.
Finally, I think Olbermann also succeeds in drawing growing A25-54 demo numbers because he follows the format of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report, in that he doesn't get 2 or 3 people to just go all out in abusive verbal disagreements, rather he gets an educated person to carry out an intellectual conversation to divulge the facts about a particular story.

I might be entirely wrong and the entire ratings boost for MSNBC might be due to Barack Obama's winning, or the fact that MSNBC is in general becoming more liberal (thus becoming a viewing station for liberals, which is what liberals have been waiting for). Who knows. I personally think its due to his layout which maintains viewer interest rather well.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

Once I get my laptop back later tonight I will post a screencap of my chart showing KO and BO ratings.

For 2008 only, again 2008 ONLY, KO is trending upwards in both Total Viewers and A25-54, while BO is trending downwards in both.
If you add in all of 2007 and 2006 (which is as far as I go back since 2006 was when TVNewser started publishing Total Viewers), both KO and BO are trending upwards, however KO's trends are greater than BO's.

Re: mediabistro.com: TVNewser

Haha, exactly... the survey says...0...

If you ever chart the weekly numbers, it is like a mountain. Numbers start low on Monday, peak on Wednesday, sometimes Thurdsay, and then go into the toilet on Friday.

Nobody who is sane has time for cable news on Friday. Either people are going down the shore, going to a movie, going to the bar...ITS FRIDAY!

"I know you don't smoke weed, I know this.
