Very informative post.I have a self hosted WP blog as well and the hosting was a bit of a struggle in the beginning.I had to change it a couple of times until I found one that I´m happy with (good service and low price)

When it comes to the domain name, I recommend having one of your main keywords in it.For instance, if you are doing online marketing, the word marketing is good to have in the domain name.

I do a google search to see if someone has already used the exact same post-title I was about to use.If so, I change it a bit to make it unique for a while :) I also try to use the same words as in the post-title in the first sentence line of my blog post.

Yep, PayPal is the only alternative for international affiliates at least if you want to keep your earnings instead of handing them over to your bank in different fees.Some affiliate programs have launched cash cards which work great too.

I guess many people have heard that Squidoo lenses rank well on Google and fast too.Slapping up a bunch of banners and affiliate links will not work, people are too smart for that.I have done a few Squidoo lenses, one about my blog and one about social media.

I provide useful information on both lenses, and a free newsletter that people can subscribe too where I promote my products but also send lots of interesting information and tips.

The key for success with Squidoo is to update your lenses regularly, once per week or so.

Digg can be a really powerful tool, and you must build up your profile by submitting quality stuff from other people as well, not just your own.It takes time to research and then write an excellent post, but it is worth it even if the chance of hitting the front page is minimal.

It´s a good idea to let your readers know that you will not be blogging for a little while.I blog everyday because my readers expect a new post, so I write posts in advance and then just publish everyday, it takes only a few minutes to login (any computer with internet access will do) and hit the publish button.

I have seen a lot of blogs and most of them are over advertising in some way.This makes the reader confused and leave quickly.It makes more sense to promote 1 excellent affiliate program and build an income in it before moving on to the next.If you promote 10, you will not be able to promote them efficiently.

Hi Peter, very good idea for a post.I´m a PIPS member as well and in 2006 when I started I followed all the tips in the 30 days book and now when I look back, there was lots of things I could have done better, for instance getting a Wordpress blog right from the start instead of a blogger blog.I would also have saved a lot of money by concentrating on article marketing instead of PPC.

Another thing I sort of regret is that I chose the "online marketing niche" for my blog, I realized later it was too crowded but it was too late to do anything about it because I had worked a lot of to write posts.So, if I would start all over today I would do proper niche research, getting a wordpress blog and a domain name with my best keyword in it.

All traffic is welcome, there is never enough of it.However, I do prefer highly targeted traffic if possible.The problem with the traffic from social media sites (especially stumbleupon and digg) is that the traffic does not convert into sales.I would also like to know how much skittles sales increased.

I´m very happy with my choice of Web host.I have been using Host4Profit since may 2006.It´s not the cheapest but their affiliate program makes it really affordable when you earn $10 per month for every account you refer to them.My hosting is very cheap :)

Great post! I have the same problem. People sign up, but many do not confirm their subscriptions.Very frustrating.

I have been using a spam check tool to analyze the spam rating of my emails.

I think Comment Kahuna is a great software.You write your comment when you arrive at the blog as usual, but it makes it so much easier to find relevant blogs than if done manually.Like always, no point in posting a comment if you have nothing useful to say.

A different comment on every blog.

Comment Kahuna has a feature where you can see on which blogs you have commented (if you cannot remember), and check in a few days if your comment has been approved or not.In a few weeks I would check the blogs that have approved my comments and comment again, if there is something to comment on.

I did the same mistake in the beginning.I guess you have to give in order to receive, stumble others blog posts and they will stumble yours.It seems to work quite well.(I stumbled and Dugg this post.)

Good point! I have noticed that if you give too many different choices to people on your blog, they will not buy anything because they don´t know what to choose, so offering less is actually more.
