I'm really looking forward to the Razor special for Battlestar Gallactica also. I'm dreading next Spring when we'll be hit with even more Reality TV programming due to the strike. Here's hoping the TV networks give a little and get the writers back on the job!

Brent

Re: Cellphone DVR Scheduling For Homezone, TiVo

Don't forget that Beyond TV has had this functionality for a long time. This is another example of the networks struggling to figure out how to deal with time-shifting tv. I think they are beginning to figure it out - but blaming DVR's for the shows problem is a stretch. The real problem is the way they have measured viewership in the past.

Re: Vista Media Center After 6 Months

Hey Dave, Since you mentioned Acronis True Image, I should mention that you can get a rebranded version of that program for free if you have a Seagate or Maxtor hard drive. The HDHR works with BTV & Sage (as you mentioned), but it also works with MCE, VistaMCE, GBPVR and Media Portal also.

Can you tell I love this device? 2 tuners that can be used for unencrypted qam and/or OTA HD. Plus it doesn't use up any ports on your computer - just plug it into your lan and you're set! With Beyond TV's latest version its a bit easier and doesn't require cli at all - huge improvement for me.

When I first got mine it wasn't even supported by BTV, MCE or Sage. I got mine working with an user-made add-on for BTV. Talk about work to set up! It was a lot of work and I became a tester (not just a user). Much improved with BTV now though.

Re: First Two Season Passes Dropped

I've dropped Carpoolers, Kid Nation, Big Bang Theory.

I'm watching Reaper, but it's just okay. Getting exposure and "airtime" on the regular radio, satellite radio and internet will be what those smaller and newer artists will still need help with.
However, I don't see how the music industry as it stands today will be able to get up-and-coming artists to sign contracts that take away those artists ability to at least get a cut from the profit of their music.
Maybe something like this would work for those artists: a PR/talent-finding firm that gets a cut of future profits in return for promoting their music and getting them attention. Seems like that would be a much better deal for the artist then the current system where the record company pays an up-front fee to the artist per album and then gets all future profits.
I'm no expert here so feel free to tell me where I'm wrong here :)

Re: Star Wars, the Television Series

Ben,
Since you asked, I had to do some searching. I have a very large pile of DVD's in a storage box hid away in the basement since many of them are ripped onto my HTPC and served up via SageTV. The quality is still darn good for my tastes.

I guess eventually I could be swayed to follow the crowd if Blu-Ray acceptance hits the tipping point, but for now I'll stay in my price range with the standard DVDs. Oh by the way, my Dad was very confused about the whole HD-DVD and Blu-Ray thing too. He was worried about the message he got from Netflix telling him they would no longer stock HD-DVD's. I understand why their trying all these new things, but I wonder how many people will actually use the VOD's. I'm probably advertisers worst nightmare since with my HTPC, I skip all commercials unless its on a sports program. The real answer for the television networks is to lock down their content, but it sure seems like there are some things coming out soon that will circumvent those lock-downs such as the Hauppauge HD recorded coming out in the next few months.

I guess for the non-geek they'll be stuck watching commercials, but there will still be ways go get around it I think.

Re: Lottery-sized Home Theater

My home theater is adorned with a lovely mustard colored chair from 1960-70's, a walmart purchased futon and old carpet. Sounds like you now understand that the Wii is about having fun and the most successful games for it will be the ones that use the wiimote controller to their fullest potential. The Wii is definitely fun and appeals to a larger group then just your typical console gamers. I also can't wait for the new Madden coming soon for the Wii - that is supposed to be very very nice.

As you mentioned, the Wii is lacking in graphics, CPU power etc., but it still beats the competition with its interface. Wouldn't it be nice if you could cross the Wii's interface and ease of use with the Xbox 360's graphics, ability to act as an extender etc.? Do that and you have the holy grail of gaming in my opinion.

Brent

Re: Davis Turns 2.0

Congrats and Happy 2.0 Davis!

I've been enjoying following your site. I'm not a fanboy of any of these phones although I'd love to have an iphone or even a blackjack for that matter, but the chart Apple is showing was simply a marketing ploy. Here's the link to the chart I put up.

A Better iPhone Comparison Chart

Re: Yahoo makes a better search through Flickr integration

I like the changes to the Yahoo search. To say you are out of touch when you're an "A Lister" is not correct. I can say that since I'm still a lowly "C" or whatever lister.

Brent

Re: Why I don’t recommend Cocomment

Robert,
Have you tried Commentful? Commentful?

I use it for the same purpose as you're using CoComment and I think it works great. Take the time you need or just scale back the blogging to give you more time with the family.

In the meantime, you will be missed! I always look forward to your blog posts and I'll be waiting for your return.

Brent

Re: How many people use RSS anyway?

10M seems low, but I can't really say for certain.

I can say that I subscribe to RSS and I've been working on increasing the RSS readership of my blog with some success. Do I get more hits or fewer hits with those people subscribed to RSS? No brainer: More hits by far - I do have a more tech-savvy group, but there are plenty of my readers who are reading the blog for the media tech news such as TV news and tools, photo tools etc. and they ARE using RSS for sure.

Re: SnapStream Beyond TV 4 Hands-On Review

Thanks for a nice, well written review. About a year ago I tried out Meedio, Sage and BTV3 and decided on Beyond TV (BTV) due to it's ease of use. It had the best WAF for me which is always important. I have recently upgraded to BTV4 and am very happy with the new features and continued stability. I also use Beyond Media which is not integrated with Beyond TV, but works well with it. The word is that this integration will happen on one of the upgrades to BTV4.X - probably not BTV 4.1.

Most important to me was the ease of use (a guest can sit down and use it with no guidance needed), picture quality (very good and stable), and the beyond media features that allow you to play dvd's and video files from your hard drive. The product has improved consistently over time.

I've always been open to other products and will be in the future although I would rather not be tied to the Microsoft product because I feel they are so focused on content protection that the user will eventually dealing with the same silly DRM stuff you are beginning to see with TIVO.

Re: SnapStream Blog: Placeshifting with Beyond TV and Orb

If you want to just placeshift (stream) your recorded TV shows without using ORB, you can also use ccarlins latest version of the built-in BeyondTV webadmin It doesn’t use as much CPU and it’s built into BeyondTV. All you need to add to your setup is VLC (free video app) and the latest version of webadmin as modified by ccarlin.

http://brentevans.blogspot.com/2007...ceshifting.html . I the meantime, I do use Orb for DVD’s saved on the hard drive as well as music.

Brent

Re: Autonomy Exercises Option To Buy Blinkx; Merges With Its Consumer Division; Will IPO It In London

The video search engine space is getting pretty competitive. Add to that the other online video content engines like Joost and things are getting very interesting. I recently did a summary of four newer video search engines including Blinkx in this story:
http://brentevans.blogspot.com/2007/04/video-se...
