I must confess I was never much of a Mariah Carey fan, but she definitely sang the h--- out of that song, no doubt. Happy OSF!

You know, it's really a shame what's happened to Whitney, 'cause in her day..? That woman had a simply remarkable voice. Absolutely beautiful.

As for Luther, that man's pipes are all anyone needs to hear.

Great choices!

Girl, you had to take me back there didn't you? That song was the JAM! Every time that song came on I had to stop whatever I was doing and move. That groove was pumpin!

Happy OSF Marvalus!

You know I gotta admit this one was borderline freaky, but hey! I can hang!

And this song I think definitely gets to what I think the boy/girl thing is about. And D'Angelo is a bad, bad brother. I really miss the cat's music and wish I was hearing more from him these days.

Anyway, great pic, and thanks for the challenging topic!

Hey Marvalus.

You know you simply cannot go wrong with Bob Marley. He was so much more than a musician/performer, just one of the greats.

Thanks a lot for this one and Happy OSF!

I like your site, first of all. And good choices. But I gotta say that, well, Toni is cool? But this one is Luther's house in my book. Luther got this one and gone...

I dug "Blame It On the Boogie" a lot, and I remember it well, but the real happy surprise here fror me was Marlon's tune! I had never heard that one before, and that slow kinda funk groove he had goin' on was hittin it. Much more my kinda style. Had some chicken grease on it!

Thanks much for the discovery, and Happy OSF!

You sho' 'nuff hit it on the head with Sister Etta James (real name Jamesetta Hawkins). This sister is bad, bad, BAD when it comes to layin' down the blues. Etta is the real deal for real. Her longtime guitar player Bobby Murray is a good friend of mine.

And BB King? Nothing more needs be said.

Hey Marvalus!

Well you definitely selected one of the best examples around, no doubt. The Carpenters were a good group, and Karen Carpenter had an absolutely beautiful voice as your video shows, but man when Luther got hold to that song...? And it's not just his voice really is quite strong as well, but it's the arrangement too.

Great pic!

Hey Marvalus!

This has definitely been a Good News Tuesday, no doubt about it. Just an incredible thing.

But now the work begins. And as you pointed out in the post below, the work isn't just for Obama to do. It's for all of us. It's for all of us to figure out where we can best lend a hand to get this ship back upright again and sailing in the right direction.

'Fraid I have to part company with you on this one. I have never been able to get into this show at all. Not one bit. For those who went on to succeed I'm happy for 'em, but this show to me represents so many things that I believe are wrong with the entertainment industry today. Plus I can't stand reality shows.

Let me stop...

You obviously are a fan of long standing, so let me seal this raincloud up tight...

in Old School Friday: The Year Was… on Conversations With Marva
Hey Marvalus!

Well I must confess I was a 'few' years ahead of you in HS, but hey. It's all good, right?

Say this is a great choice. I remember when Janet came out with this song and it got my attention right off. The dance moves are cool, but what I really like is that beat. Even though they stole the guitar riff straight out of Sly Stone's "I Wanna Thank You (f'lettin me be m'self again). At least she added her own flavor to the riff, and it worked out for one heck of a funky number.

Happy OSF!

Hey Marvalus.
Jamie is definitely a seriously talented guy. Stand-up comedy, actor, and a good musician. Out of all his skills I think I like his acting best. His portrayal of Ray Charles was just off the chain.

Great choice, and Happy OSF!

in Old School Friday: A Tribute To Jazz! on Conversations With Marva
Ray Charles was a true master. The way he took jazz and then stirred it up with gospel, country, and blues was incredible. Ray always sang songs you could 'feel' deep down, and that always ranks first with me. If I'm not feelin it, then I'm not likin it.

in The Death of the Southern Strategy? on Blacksmythe
Lester,

One other possibility - or addition - that I think you may have missed is the migration of whites to the South from the North - younger whites with non-traditionally 'Southern ' white ideas. The influx of this younger more progressive generation into the Old South has also helped to dramatically change the face of that region. This is particularly true in areas like North Carolina and Virginia, as we saw.

Hey Marvalus!

About that addiction to True Blood?
Just want you to know you've got a friend for real with that. I LOVE that show man. LOVE it. My kinda stuff. And Lafayette is a phenomenal character, and the brother who plays him is just great.

The characters are great. The story line is great. The concept is great. Was always hoping HBO would hop into the horror genre because I knew they would e the only network that woulod do it right. And they definitely did this one right.

Just praying this gets renewed for another season!

My wife was singing that song all evening after the results came in, and I kinda suspected this was gonna be one of the major hits for OSF. And you definitely can't find a better, more appropriate choice.

in A New Entitlement for the 21st Century (Crossposted at Blackprof) on Blacksmythe
Hey Lester.

First of all, this is a great format, and I really enjoy and appreciate the dialogue/discussion format. I think it works great.

Secondly, I think you make an excellent point about pushing for free public education at the college level, and I don't think it's an outrageous thing to consider at all. You already made the argument that we don't raise objections for spending the outrageous sums of money we don't have when it's for wars, etc. But even more importantly this is about the point you raise about the investment that is being made. Because education, if you look at it as national priority (which it should be), is essential not only to our national security but to our national productivity. A more educated populace helps ALL of us, so it makes sense that we invest in something that helps ALL of us in such an obvious and direct manner.

Also, there is the point you raised about providing free college in exchange for service. I believe this fits somewhat in the model of what Obama has been talking about in terms of encouraging youth to give back to their communities in exchange for benefits such as those which you are proposing. I haven't always agreed with you on your perspectives concerning Obama, but I'm with you on this one 100 percent.

And with you having 5 kids..? Brother, I can understand the motivation to come up with creative solutions to urgent dilemmas.

So to speak.

I look forward to your next video conversation.
