I think part of that comes, in social media at least, from there being a dearth of actual communicators in the space. There are a lot of pundits who come from a background of just reading something online and deciding they're an expert, rather than a background of communicating to/with people in the best way(s) possible.

I love the comment above about testing your ideas - sometimes the most creative, eye-catching ideas fall afoul of the basic questions - do they move the needle on your objectives? Do they use the right tools to reach the target audience?

Oh, and please do feel free to call me out if I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure it happens a lot :)

Re: Please Help Us Help The Loveless Family

Ken - as I said in my ChipIn comment, good for you for being a wonderful friend to the Loveless family in their time of need. Specifically:
- The people we need to convince are clients and potential clients, not just fellow fishbowlers.
- Results matter.

Perhaps things have changed in the last year - perhaps the market has matured (or maybe even I have), but I think your take adds something to the discussion that makes me pause and consider how I've approached this (I'd add something about having an intellectual crush on you, but that may be a little creepy).

Thanks for making me stop and think again about this.

Re: Response to Barabra Talisman’s Misinformed 12for12k Post

Classy response Danny.

I agree with one of your follow-up comments on Barbara's blog - her second post would have been a much better way to lead the conversation. The first sparked a debate not over the best way to conduct a fundraising campaign but over your integrity which, knowing you as I do, was never in question for me. The second post, meanwhile, is much more constructive.

Re: We Are Our Own Worst Enemy

Great points Matt. You're absolutely right - there's a definite danger of falling into this trap, either by social media specialists (because that's what they do so they feel they have to recommend it) or by clients who feel they have to be "in" social media.

As people advising companies, we need to be tool-agnostic. If a tool isn't right for a client, we shouldn't recommend it. Heck, if a company isn't ready or willing to engage in social media properly, we should should recommend other media (although listening is always a good idea in my experience). That's why I consider myself a communicator, not a social media guy.

Thanks for making me think.

Re: Guy Grilling the iPhone Guy – A True Story Told in Tweets

Priceless. You're right - splitting bills between friends, or collaborating on buying a gift, or even collecting membership fees for your soccer team, are great examples of uses for Zoompass.

Re: the U.S. - right now we're focused on our initial launch in Canada and getting feedback from Canadians so we can help to make Zoompass even more convenient and useful.

Dave
.-= Dave Fleet´s last blog post ...How can I use Zoompass? =-.

Re: Why Zoompass Could Be a Marketer's Dream | danny brown

Cheers Dave. It's one of the things I love about new and forward-thinking technology apps; I seriously think the potential can be huge for companies that really think outside the normal web or mobile app use.

If Zoompass can keep it simple and appeal to the folks that use apps as if they're second nature, yet also the common consumer, I think they could have a pretty powerful tool on their hands.

Look forward to seeing where it goes.

Re: Why Zoompass Could Be a Marketer's Dream | danny brown

This is why I like your site, Danny - always thinking creatively.

Thanks for the post. Glad you liked the session. You're right - the discussion was great; I was able to just sit back and watch for a good chunk of it.

Two of my biggest highlights (among many) were Jonathan's youth and social media presentation (for the great argument he made around the generational gap in social media) and Andrew Sinclair's piece (for the thoughtful discussion among the audience).

The whole event was excellent, though - I look forward to returning in future years.

Re: Its Here - Better then Christmas

Congratulations on a great event! I would also put people like Todd Defren in with the midfielders - they're workhorses who, as you say, lead by example.

Cheers

Re: Be Wary of Creating Pedestals

Great points Chris. The reason I still comment here is because you ARE all of those things, which I know from this site and from meeting you.

On the other hand, there are plenty of A-listers who only converse with each other and rarely reply to the "little people." They may just be people, but they don't seem to view themselves as such. I understand the 'scale' argument but it's clear that they decide to deal with it by prioritizing other high-profile personalities. That's fine; it doesn't hurt me.

Still, I have no time for people who do put themselves on pedestals. I don't comment, and rarely read, those "A-list" sites. Meanwhile, I read all of your posts. Thinking like that which you've shown here is why. Keep it up.

Re: Wrapping up Panasonic

Hey Chris... sounds like a good event.
