Firefox extension require bit of porting before they work with it. There's also a Webkit based browser from Digia (finnish software corporation) coming to N900.

Re: Opinion: The Nokia N900

it's worth saying that the N900 is almost the ultimate tool for anyone doing any on-call Unix sysadmin work... this will be the subject of an upcoming article :)

Re: Opinion: The Nokia N900

Battery life is what you'd expect from a modern smartphone... it's not going to last you long with intense usage but like my Android and iPhone handsets it survives a day with moderate use.

Re: Opinion: The Nokia N900

The Nokia browser actually appears to be a mini derivative of Firefox as opposed to a whole new browser based on the Gecko rendering engine. Hence the familiar security windows when visiting a site with an invalid SSL certificate and the availability of some common Firefox extensions such as Adblock Plus.

Re: VoIP on the Nokia N900

If you jailbreak your iPhone there is a nice SIP client called SIPhon.

The handset on my desk is a SNOM 820 :)

Re: VoIP on the Nokia N900

Thanks Dan,
It's on the must have list now for my upcoming mobile purchase.

Re: VoIP on the Nokia N900

Yes, you can do exactly that. Because VoIP over 3G can be a bit unreliable you can also set your VoIP number to divert to your mobile number if you aren't online. That way you can use VoIP over WiFi on the N900 (or any other SIP device) at home or, if you're offline, you'll receive the call on your mobile (you'll have to pay for the divert charge but it's very cheap compared to international calls from your mobile or landline). Your relatives in the UK won't know the difference and will just be charged as though they were calling a normal UK landline.

The guys at VoIP.co.uk should be able to set this up for you.

Re: What’s the best backpack a geek can buy?

I carry an Oakley Kitchen Sink but it was quite hard to get hold of and I don't recommend anyone else gets one because I've never seen another one at any events and I don't want to ;)

Seriously though, I can put every portable gadget I own in there, along with a couple of laptops and chargers and it still looks empty!. Nifty padded section with sneaky side-zip for laptops, top-loading section for glasses, mp3 players etc and a back section for smaller gubbins. It also has a reversible inner section that's accessible from the bottom that's great for traveling as it lets you keep clothes separate from gadgets while still sharing the same space... also good for separating clean and dirty clothes.

But you should just buy a crumpler ;)

Re: Spotify and Hero on 3UK

Yeah - if only...

And - I forgot the sting in the tail at the close of the fruitless exchange with the floor manager.

3FM: "Ah Mr B - I see that you are a very special customer - you have had your account a long time and have always paid on time - I can offer you a very special offer"

JB: "Oh yes" (Faint glimmer of something good)

3FM: "I can cancel your PAC and put you on a new monthly contract for 10 pounds a month - with UNLIMITED SMS"

JB: "With data?"

3FM: "Oh no - but it is such a good offer - what have you got to lose?'

JB: "A chance to own a brand new HTC Hero?"

3FM: "We don't do the HTC Hero...." {back onto previous script again}

It might help if the 3 operatives realise that telling UK customers the same thing 10 times just makes them ANGRY !

I WANT A HTC HERO !

JB

Re: Spotify and Hero on 3UK

PLEASE tell me you recorded that conversation?

Re: O2 launch the Palm Pre: We go to the party…

:) guess I have to cut you some slack then. also, it probably did not have the latest software update to 1.2.1. As much as I love Mippin (they're a major technology provider behind http://vodafone.com/myweb ) they're not selling anything. No one rings their call centre up to complain when something isn't compatible.

As I've said - I'd like to see a better basic version. But without being able to sell content through it, there's little incentive to do so.

T
(These comments are my preciouseses - no one else's)

Re: Vodafone Live!, not available on the N86

"It's not like James has turned up in a speedboat."

It's only a matter of time before he gets cast as Bond.

Re: Vodafone Live!, not available on the N86

We manage fine with a 2 person dev team using WUFL and our own historic data.
