I feel like you don't really listen to your users unless they are suggesting something that's easy to implement or in-line with what you plan to do anyway.

I see people asking for a proper API and third party integrations but nothing is forthcoming except for Wink integration which the new modes seem to have broken (certainly I've not had any notifications since it changed and the Wink app refers to them by their old name).

Re:

I can't wait for mine to arrive.

Photo storage
I'm in Rafe's camp in that I have a robust solution consisting of Google Photos and Dropbox photo sync. The Dropbox sync means the photos end up on every one of my Mac desktops / laptops which in-turn are backed up to an Apple Time Machine so there are two independent cloud copies plus several local copies around my network.

Photo Presentation
Colour e-ink displays are what will make the difference here. As Ben mentioned you don't want a glowing screen on all the time and when you put photos on the wall you don't want to have to run a power cable up there. Unfortunately colour e-ink displays aren't quite there yet but once they are I suspect we'll have some wifi enabled battery screens that last for months at a time, only powering on to update the photo.

Re: Truphone’s Head of Special Projects, Dan Lane, jumps to Simwood (and why you should care)

Thanks for the kind words Ewan; it certainly is an exciting time for me and the guys at Simwood, I'm looking forward to showing you what we're working on soon.

Don't be so quick to discount Truphone though; there is some fantastic talent in that company and they have some very exciting projects of their own that you'll start to hear about soon; some of which I will still be involved in through to my ongoing role as R&D advisor.

Re: Giveaway – Win a Nerf Rapidstrike CS-18

I'm not sure how the cats would feel about me owning this

Re: Educating the barman at The Refinery on contactless thanks to #GemaltoNFC

My Amex is contactless and it's NEVER worked - it always says "INSERT OR SWIPE CARD" when I try to use NFC :(

Re: SteakStones: The ultimate way to enjoy steak!

The problem here, of course, is that for those of us who like our steaks rare the stone will continue to cook it while you eat it :(

Re: GiffGaff down again

I agree! old school telecoms providers have a lot to learn from the web-world. Had a good chat with the cabbie about both GetTaxi and Hailo (he loves having both of them and hasn't settled on a favourite yet) and at the end of the journey paid by Amex without any additional fees or fuss.

For a later journey from South Kensington to Waterloo I first tried Hailo (to compare the two) which told me that no cabs were available due to the peak time (it was around 6pm so that's fair enough). I loaded up GetTaxi and was told it would take 6 minutes for the cab to arrive - I was about to hit the big green button when I looked up and saw a black cab with his light on so I hailed that and hit the red button in GetTaxi.

About halfway through the journey I realised I had no cash and I hadn't told the cabbie that I wanted to pay by card (they all request you mention card payment at the beginning of the ride) not to mention the huge fees associated with cabs paid for by card... thankfully one of my companions had cash.

I'm absolutely SOLD on GetTaxi - even if I would have had to wait 6 minutes I think that's quite reasonable in peak times and the benefit of using a card without penalty is great.

The experience was also far superior to Cabulous which I'd previously used in San Francisco.

I look forward to using it again soon!

Re: I’m thinking about killing my UK operator accounts

Let's do that... you have my number!

Re: I’m thinking about killing my UK operator accounts

We should talk!

Re: Video: Ordering a cab with Neal Fullman, GetTaxi UK’s CEO

That looks fantastic, I loved using Cabulous and Uber in SF so I'm installing the app now just in case I ever need a cab when I'm in the city.

Question though... what happens if I want to pay by card and I use the app to hail a cab but during the journey my battery dies or my destination is underground with no signal? (Euston train station for example).

Re: So, I’m launching a mobile network.

You are right and wherever possible I will be building out my own infrastructure. As an MVNO we'll still be reliant on third-parties but it's my job to ensure we partner with the correct people for the job and have SLAs where required. Stuff breaks though and it's how you deal with the breakages that counts. I have been publicly critical of other MVNOs in the past when they have failed to meet my expectations when dealing with outages and I'd expect my customers to be just as critical if not more so.

Re: So, I’m launching a mobile network.

I don't want to say too much at this point but all of my startups have made heavy use of Freeswitch since 2007 and that isn't changing any time soon ;)

Re: So, I’m launching a mobile network.

Very different propositions but we should definitely have a chat sometime :)

Re: So, I’m launching a mobile network.

I agree, in an ideal world we wouldn't need a customer service line and we'll certainly be doing everything we can to make sure our customers don't need it. Sometimes things do go wrong though and sometimes things can be bit confusing so when that happens it's important to provide great customer service over the phone, e-mail and of course social media.

Re: So, I’m launching a mobile network.

This is one of our core propositions!
