Good interview. Amazing that John Carmack has such a intimate role in development almost 20 years after he founded the company. Reading that he was the sole guy behind getting Doom Classic on the iPhone is inspiring.

Definitely one of my heroes while growing up and still today.

I finally solved most of my issues with some tweaking of the disqus.php file. This is not an ideal solution but this is what I did for a temporary fix: http://themehybrid.com/support/topic/problems-w... (see my last comment on that thread). I look forward to the new WP plugin release for Disqus.

During the course of Team 2’s and other teams’ interviews, we have observed three trends concerning the Executive Branch’s representatives (“minders”) at those interviews.
First, agencies lack a common understanding of the minders’ purpose in our interviews. Agencies’ perspectives include (1) minders as agency representatives, ensuring that Commission staff abide by the agreement between the Executive Branch and the Commission on the substantive scope of the Commission’s inquiry. (2) minders as participants in the interviews, answering questions directed at witnesses; (3) minders as agency monitors, reporting to their respective agencies on Commission staff’s lines of inquiry and witnesses’ verbatim responses.(4) minders as counselors, for witnesses to consult during interviews; and (5) minders as records of action-items generated during interviews, such as transmitting documents offered by witnesses to Commission staff. We suggest that Dan Levin give the agencies a common understanding of the purpose of minders’ presence at interviews.
Second, minders have on occasion answered questions directed to witnesses. Critical to our investigation is determining not just how the Intelligence Community is supposed to function pursuant to its policies and procedures but also how the Intelligence Community functions in actuality. When we have asked witnesses about certain roles and responsibilities within the Intelligence Community, minders have prompted witnesses’ responses by referencing formal polices and procedures. As a result, witnesses have not responded to our questions and have deprived us from understanding the Intelligence Community’s actual functioning and witnesses view of their roles and responsibilities.
Third, Minders have positioned themselves physically and have conducted themselves in a manner that we believe intimidates witnesses from giving full and candid responses to our questions. Minders generally have sat next to witnesses at the table and across from Commission staff, conveying to witnesses that minders are participants in interviews and are of equal status to witnesses. Moreover, minders take verbatim notes of witnesses statements, which we believe conveys to witnesses that their superiors will review their statements and may engage in retribution. We believe that the net effect of minders’ conduct, whether intentionally or not, is to intimidate witnesses and to interfere with witnesses providing full and candid responses. Moreover, the minders’ verbatim note taking facilitates agencies in alerting future witnesses to the Commissions lines of inquiry and permits agencies to prepare future witnesses either explicitly or implicitly.
We request that you raise the subject of minders’ conduct with the Executive Branch in order to prevent minders from imposing themselves in these ways in the future. Perhaps the attached statement of principles might help define minders roles and conduct. We look forward to your assistance. Thank you.

Hello Daniel, first of all let me say it's great to be on Discus, thank you for developing the site. I wish I had been blogging when I ran for Mayor of San Francisco, and Alameda. I can certainly see the potential now.

I'd also like to say I feel the exact same way about my profession (clown). Keep doing what you're doing, and don't let other people's lack of understanding/ignorance bring you down. Concentrate on the people who dig what you do. Good luck.

My question is how long it'll be until blogs cease to be classified as something different. Not that there's something bad about "blogs", but there's a slightly different connotation in that word. A An online newspaper is made to feel trivial compared to its printed cousin ("it's just the blog version"). It also makes it feel geekier; to my older relatives, reading a blog sounds high-tech, instead of just saying you're reading a story published online.

The term and concept is certainly mainstream now. If someone tells me they have a website, I think blog. Websites with content are updated like a blog, and almost all are structured like one.

The most meaningful difference in the word blog is that it implies something personal.

Oh, and as The Angry Drunk pointed out, since comments are being fed back into Wordpress, I can actually re-enable my WP Recent Comments widget. The links won't match up, since the Recent Comments widget is linking to the WP comment ID, which doesn't exist on the blog post page anymore, but I'm willing to live with that for now.

And since the Disqus comments run back through Wordpress, I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to update the comment count through Wordpress correctly, and not have to use the Javascript rewrite of "x comments" to "x comments and y reations". If the comments are being piped back into WP and I don't want to use the "and y reactions" bit because it effs up my layout, I should be able to override the javascript and just use WP for that, no?

Hi Daniel - Overall, I really am happy with it so far. (Its only been up for a few days, but there are a lot of things I really love about it.)

Truly, the one thing I would change if I could is the inflexibility in the layout of javascript widgets. Granted, my site's layout is more complex than many of your users' sites, specifically my sidebar. If you look at the "Recent Posts" bit in the top, and view the source, you can see I'm going outside the standard Wordpress widget layout. That's actually manually coded into the sidebar.php of the Wordpress install.

As I continue to tweak the style of the threads block, I'll try to document what I can here, so other Disqus users may benefit from it.
