in Well Designed and Whimsical on Cuppytalk
It's very intriguing to observe cultural-based aesthetics and how they transfer into Second Life, including how the furniture in a room is positioned, or how certain tools act as gravity for focused groups to create some really badass sights.

For a long time, I've been watching the Japanese excellence in Second Life — and others around the world that have adopted that excellence, not by birth or home location but by friendship. Amazing!

@Cuppycake , I'm sure the Drowsy masterminds will be thrilled you blogged about them. I know you're on Flickr and if you haven't seen it yet, http://www.flickr.com/groups/1093864@N25/

in 4 Lessons for Social Media Marketers on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Also key to remember that for each of these (very good) points, there're a lot of fakers out there who use the same words but play a different (lame) game. For instance, the companies that pay bloggers to post positive reviews, or ones who have a faux personality which doesn't work out in the long run. Also beware of "buzzword bingo", when useful terms like "synergy" and "thoughtful communication" are sullied by ineffective, in-practice usage.

Zappos has a self-perpetuating personality effect now. They get cited so often, and with good reason. I'd like to see other rising companies get more visibility here — the more we can celebrate, the so-called merrier. I blog for the Tips & Tricks section of the Second Life blogs @ http://tr.im/sltnt and fellow Linden Lab employees have been showing personality in posts like this: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/communit... It also helps we have virtual world avatars, which are lovely for expressing personality.

And often, it's not just "creativity" but "novelty" too. You need to be keen on mixing longterm viability with sudden surprises, viral videos, and other "hooks".

Basics, true. But ones that will continue to be true.

in Product Placement in Marvel Comics on Chris Brogan
The Heroes webcomic has been doing this sort of thing since near the beginning — as long as the products serve the story and don't mutilate it, I enjoy.

in danieltenner.com — Dealing with impossible crises on danieltenner.com
Daniel, not just beautifully-written — an aesthetically-pleasing presentation, aside from the small serif font I'm experiencing in this comment editor.

Anger is reflective of your internal control; if you can't control yourself, how can you expect to control the situation around you?

Also re: humanity, it helps to find common ground and rapport with the person on the other end of the line — listen to their story too if they get emotional, like if they're having a bad day at work and you're the first person to treat them nicely... that can make a SUBSTANTIAL difference.

I found this article via Reddit!

Daniel Tenner Torley,

Thanks for the compliment. You're right, I need to sort out this text-box sometime! I wonder why Disqus defaults to such a tiny font...

About anger and self-control, yes, that's a very good way to put it. As for relating, you're right too. It's the good old golden rule of ethics - treat others like you would like to be treated. Thanks for adding your comment :-)

in How to Use Chopsticks - Become an Expert in 90 Seconds on The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss
I grew up in a household of chopstick-wielding experts — well, my Dad and Mom. But I could never quite grasp their advantage over a fork or even a pointy stick. So to this day, whenever I go out for sushi or Chinese food, I always ask for a fork.

I've loved doing #1 in front of relatives and debunking stupid superstition. My Grandma used to bemoan people leaving food for the dead when there are poor people (this was in Bangkok, where the rich/poor divide on the same street is STARTLING!) who are so hungry, that food shouldn't go to waste.

Definitely helpful to have videos for this; spatial movement can't easily be understood by most in text alone.

Fast forward even further in the future, where we find Facebook in the middle of another major redesign, and people press to keep the current (today's *new*) design.

Very surprised I don't see that little dino eating Jar Jar Binks, or other insults specific to the Star Wars universe.

Now we know what Perez Hilton would do if unleashed on Chewbacca, however.

in demoSLene - awesome shadows, Havok 4 physics, WindLight video feast on Torley Lives
@Ener & Lucian: Thank youuuu!

@skribe & Ghosty: I definitely have to disagree there, because your points are about validity in a different direction. A key question you didn't bring up was: "Who are we marketing to here?" and that's what I deliberately left unanswered, to see who'd bring that up. :) Two hints:

(1) It isn't "WTF" to emerging "blue oceans".
(2) The word "demoSLene" was chosen for a reason(s).

Re: #3, I'm glad that sparked your curiosity. They're not in the main viewer, but available in experimental viewers.

Thanx for watching!

in I can see my shadow on Torley Lives
@Dedric: Some Resident viewers have the shadow code too, so if you have a supported graphics card (currently only guaranteed to work on upper GeForce 8xxx) you can see it. But indeed, it's like.

@Kevin: Aw that sux! Can you view YouTube videos fine? Let me know what format works best for you, I've had problems uploading vids to Flickr.

@Sahoni: Yeah, mouselook can be so intimate.

@Ghosty: Best of hope with it! As mentioned, you'll need an experimental viewer that supports shadows. While I can't distro the internal Linden one, there are some Resident viewers like http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/ worth looking into.

@Al: Ha, not good news for vampires either. Oh wait, that's mirrors!

in Custom collision sounds - Video Tip of the Week #48 on Torley Lives
@Dizzy: Yes! By all means, esp. since you have a wealth of empirical installation in designing sonic installations in SL, if you make a vidtut I will share it!

@Sahona: Thanx! My new griffin is such a fun gift.

@Gigs: llCollisionSprite was so fun for cartoon effects and beyond. Ugh, broken for so long, I'll ping the internal engineering queue about it.

@Sunn: Oh I <3 seeing, and hearing cool stuff to come out of my videos! Glad you shared this, and hope to visit soon. "Primageddon", ha-ha!

@Eleonora: Direct MP3 uploads aren't supported, that's why I used WAV. And, by "near", what sort of range did you have in mind? In the Preferences, there are sliders to adjust the distance/attentuation at which you hear sounds, and you can restrict sounds to a parcel in About Land. But, you can't simply say "I want this sound to be heard up to 5 m away for everyone". Does this help clarify things?

@Ghosty: Yes, and watch the reactions... prankalicious!

@Colin: Drugs are but a mere shadow (heh) of living one's dreams!

@Porsupah: Agree, bunnies should be better represented in the next round. Some Resident-compiled viewers like http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/ have shown off shadowing.

in Second Life and the dual-core deliberation on Torley Lives
@Jo: I haven't experienced problems with running fans constantly for a long duration — the bigger potential problem here is your machine overheating, which the fans are counteracting. And hopefully the ambient room temperature is also relatively cool. I haven't run SL on my MacBook Pro a lot recently, tho. You're welcome! :)
