I agree that his larger point is valid, although the reader can easily be sidetracked by the populist references.

It is funny how we were both right about the about the economic mess a few years ago. You were screaming about the house of cards, and I said the Federal government would come to the rescue (even though they shouldn't).

Anthony Citrano So let’s address the actual message - which is that this whole thing was foreseeable. You know that; you and I had conversations about it years before it came unraveled.

"Who didn’t know a system that makes the rich richer while the poor get poorer would someday face a curtain call" -- Really, I've heard this absurd liberal lie way too long. This is nothing more that class warfare rhetoric. Mankiw's discussed the "real wage decline" issue awhile ago:

Well thought out opinion piece. The only thing we need to make sure is that the government doesn't get sucked into paying for treatment.

This is really scary – pretty soon we be told it is unpatriotic to question the collective good.

An individualist is a man who says: “I will not run anyone’s life—nor let anyone run mine. I will not rule nor be ruled. I will not be a master nor a slave. I will not sacrifice myself to anyone—nor sacrifice anyone to myself.”

in FDIC Fright on The Cosmic Tap
I know it is to the advantage of Liberals in an election year to hype any bad news, but the reality is the FED will step in, as it's done in the past, if the FDIC or Fannie/Freddie needs money.

I wonder if Obama is elected, if your "concerns" will disappear, and that same news stories will receive the same level of concern. This smells of the 1992 Clinton tactic of hyping the "bad economy" and somehow declaring it was magically fixed after election day.

The reality is that the mild early 90s recession was over by 1992, and we are not even in one today.

Anthony Citrano Well, you'll need to go scold those "liberals" - not me - if you think they're unduly hyping things, but speaking for myself I don't think it's really possible to overhype this. Most Americans are under-hyping it with heads in the sand.

We are undergoing the economic cataclysm that I have been predicting (on these pages) for years.

So, the Fed will step in because the FDIC is too big to fail, right? Well, is the Fed too big to fail? Who steps in when the Fed's ink is worthless? Your comment smacks far more of liberalism than mine - that a Nanny Bank will step in to save us from ourselves, and all will be OK. I hope it will be that easy, but I don't think it will.

A different President is not going to change this situation much. The next President is going to be sailing through some really nasty economic waters.

My opinion is that Macroeconomic statements are difficult to apply to our modern economy. Each sector is less dependent on each other than at any time before in our history. For example, the treasury continues have record breaking daily tax receipts, holiday spending is up 8% from last year but yet we have a credit crunch.

The US economy is becoming more loosely coupled due to a number of factors -- including globalization of US firms (both sales and ownership), growth in the service sectors and overall diversification.

The credit crunch has impact on the housing sector, but for businesses, they will simply turn to other financing options such as selling ownership stakes opposed to corporate bonds.

This is why we will never have a smaller government. Too many people feel that it is the goverment's duty to take care of others who less educated, naïve, under-insured or [fill in the appropriate concerned parental adjective here]. The role of government in this case is simply to enforce a fair playing field, e.g. to intervene if the 172% interest rate wasn't disclosed in the contract or someone had a gun to their head while signing the contract.

It is amazing that human race was able to evolve over last 32,000 years without an omni-present wealthfare state holding our hands from cradle to grave...

My theory is that the weaker dollar will help correct the housing market, which will help stabilize the dollar.

Foreign investors should see the housing market as a great buy right now because the homes prices are low, and the dollar is low. If you have foreign currency, it is a no brainier.

in ARMageddon? Neh .. not until Christmas, anyway. on The Cosmic Tap
The chart assumes the Fed doesn't reduce rates, which the smart money says they will have to reduce rates soon before it starts dragging down the economy. Having said that, I have no sympathy for either the borrows who overextended on an ARM or the banks crying mercy. The smart banks minimized or sold off these high risk mortgages.

The free market is a beautiful thing, it weeds out stupid people and companies. Unfortunately the Fed will have to come-to-the-rescue again to prevent the stupidity from spreading...
