Who's your daddy? The party hasn't even begun. Most people have no idea what the implications for the global economy. This outcome was baked more than ten years ago. And, those who were uber bullish were living in an alternative reality based on the biggest Wall Street bubble in history. It will likely take four or more years for this environment to gain some type of footing.

Re: Profiting From The Obesity Trend…

You still alive over here? Are you getting fat Howard? Oh, I do love those Krispy Kreme doughnuts when they come right out of the grease vat. And chocolate chip cookies with milk. You do know that carbs have the same effect on your brain as prozac? They raise your mood and your serotonin. Overeating hollow carbs is a form of self medication.

We eat incessantly because we feel unsafe and because our lives have generally lost meaning other than to spend. As the rest of the world adopts our ruthless form of capitalism, because they must or be trounced, that same "state" becomes a problem in their society. I don't believe it is a coincidence we started getting fat right about the time collective bargaining and worker representation was busted. Before that our society was generally slim and trim. Not that that point alone is the only factor. There are many.

I don't think that trend is sustainable and I think there is a reasonable chance that a shift in values may be taking place. A shift big enough to have an impact. In addition, we hate looking at our kids that now look like little pigs. When we are pigs, that's okay. But when our kids become pigs.......

Obesity is a symptom of an underlying problem. People don't just overeat because it tastes good. Well, except for Krispy Kreme. :)

Re: Now THIS was a Bad Day

Howard, I haven't been by in a while but I almost pissed my pants laughing at Todd's comment. It's an economy run by corrupt communists where investment decisions are made by the politboro rather than the markets. It's an export engine driven to the tune of 65-75% by foreign nationals using China as a low cost labor pool. It's an economy that Stephen Roach calls the most imbalanced he's ever seen and he is no spring chicken.

It's magic. Until the music stops. LOL. Was that the $57 million invested? So, now we go the Wikipedia model because they realize all of those hamsters inputing wrong data didn't work? Well, Wikipedia is successful because a core group of a few thousand global users are key to updating it. Getting millions of homeowners to update Zillow is a stretch in my estimation. Give me $50 bucks and I'll update my home. Let's see. How much would that cost them to advertise that they'll pay me then actually pay me? What's the ROI on that? I'd rather buy a McDonald's franchise and sling burgers. Better yet, a Chipotle. :)

That said, there will be fits and starts in an attempt to transform the home selling process and this may end up playing some role. Their best bet may be to try to turn this site into some type of e-realty or a national service to discount realtors or homeowners wishing to list themselves.

It's funny but my experience with real estate agents is also that they are big and fat. Half of dozen of us were walking back to our office and passed a storefront with a TV in window. People were huddled around the TV on the sidewalk and we were oblivious to any news. As we walked up, the first thing I saw was a plane hammering into the WTC and my stomach fell to the sidewalk. We asked what had happened and no one really knew. When we got back to our office the cell phones started ringing and everyone started heading home as their spouses called to coordinate picking up their kids. I remember being dazed for days.

While I abhor violence, I don't believe I would always turn another cheek. I must say I felt a fair amount of pride when I saw Americans kicking the shit out of the Taliban and carpet bombing their positions indiscriminantly with B52s.

As for the mouth thing, we all do stupid shit. As one of my teachers used to say, my mouth wasn't always attached to my brain. I had surgery after high school to repair the problem. Sounds like you have the same physical ailment. That said, I'm not against someone making unlimited dollars IF we are living in times where most people are benefitting. Otherwise, I agree a little common sense and restrain would be in order because all these people are doing is galvanizing the general populace and thereby nearly guaranteeing the party will come to an end. Whether that is Wall Street, politicians or corporate leaders.

Maybe I wouldn't be so glum if you bought me one of those Tomcars.

Signed,
Eeyore

lol

Re: Weekend Market Linkfest

Tomcar is very cool. I looked at the site and no pricing. What's up with that? I doubt it they have passed or plan to pass emissions and safety standards for mixed use but how cool would that be to drive to work? Not on the highway but...

I couldn't disagree more with Cara's assesment of Mullaly and Ford. First off, I've got a few buddies who are Ford execs and they don't drive a Focus. They get to buy Jags, Rovers and Aston Martins.......Anyone who wouldn't drive a Vanquish, DB9 or DB8 over any Lexus is emotionally impaired.

Why buy Ford instead of Toyota? Because Toyota is priced to perfection and the top two global auto makers are backed into a corner. That makes them extremely dangerous. Dangerous to Toyota. Neither Ford nor GM are a lost cause. In Europe, both do a fine job of whipping Toyota's ass as they also do in South America and are doing in China. When, and it's only a matter of time before they do, they get their shit together in North America, Toyota will no longer walk away with cherry deals at list price. Toyota and Lexus will surely do just fine even with a resurgent GM and Ford but they won't be doing so with such stupid profit margins. They'll actually have to work a little bit. In addition, there is a reasonable chance the G8 has agreed to attempt an orderly monetary rejiggering of the dollar against primarly Asian currencies. Another significant strike against Toyota's profits as their fat margin vehicles are all made in Japan.

If you wanted to buy Toyota, it was years ago, not now. And Mullaly appears to be of a little more depth than taking this job to pad his paycheck alone. Anyhoo, what's wrong with making jack? But, I must point you to the NATIONAL realtor code of ethics, article #13.

#13) Shall not practice law unless they are a lawyer.

Do I need to report you to your governing body or did you gloss over the ethics part of your profession?

I'm quite familiar with the legal education an agent must take in some states and it in no way affords you the opportunity to practice law. Nor does it supercede the requirements to have a real estate attorney or some other type of attorney involved in any real estate transaction.

Since I am not familiar with Arizona, maybe you could point us to the link in the state legal code or Arizona Supreme Court rulings which gives a real estate agent the right to practice law.

Btw, I've been thinking about challenging Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court. Might you send me some of your prior arguments before the courts? I've been involved in real estate quite often and most are idiots. I don't care if they are in Arizona or elsewhere. Whether they are trained to loosely used term ""practice law"" or not. Only lawyers are LICENSED to practice law and I would not confuse the abilities of the average RA with the average attorney. The point is people shouldn't have to "negotiate" something which is "locked" on the surface and locked illegally by anti-competitive practices. NAR's practices are illegal and people are finally challenging this in the courts.

Your argument is a ruse that people aren't smart enough to do their own diligence. They sure as hell are. Do you think Howard is capable? Are you capable? Am I capable? Others posting on this board? Maybe some people aren't but they would choose an all encompassing palate of services and decide of their own free will to "pay up" were the markets allowed to function as they should and will.

Most money managers underperform their respective benchmark indices as well. So, those dimwits telling us to buy in 2000 are likely underperformers just like the average investor is. The 80-20 rule applies to everthing. It is not a rational argument to apply anti-competitive practices to the real estate agent market. Oh, and if it was such an arduous career, how come any dimwit capable of passing a mindless test can be licensed? That is why we have gazillions of agents now taking the tests. Ain't like getting your MD, JD or PE license.

You may be an agent or may be in the industry or may know good friends who are agents but most are dimwits. I shouldn't have to renegotiate the RA contract on a point by point basis nor have someone wink at me and say it's negotiable if you know what you are doing. The markets will surely change and those clinging to the belief otherwise are going to be sadly disappointed.

Get ready for the change because it's coming at some point. ROCK ON! lol.

Re: Real Estate agents and Dinosaurs – Both not prepared for the storm. I believe, as I do in any market, that the great leaders should get what a FREE and unfettered market will bear. So, but the NAR of their anticompetitive practices and let the markets decide. If that is 8% and the market will bear it, then so be it. If it's 2%, then so be it.

As I recall Zillow has my house listed with something like 800sqft more than I have and quite a few other anamolies. It is a POS!

Re: Real Estate agents and Dinosaurs – Both not prepared for the storm. This is Custer's last stand. Where else can people with little skill or formal training in anything other than stupidity collect such massive paychecks "just because"? Now, there are some very capable people in this field but it is definitely the 80-20 rule. More like 95-5 if I could rewrite Pareto's work.

NAR will be busted because their practices are anti-competitive. That process has been ongoing for some time and people attempting to pay their home and having to fork over 6% to some dimly lit sloth will likely start a fervor for change. At that time, the entire selling process will likely take on a new look. Frankly, in a consumer empowered economy, which is only going to strengthen over time, most people don't need or want an agent. Just give us access to the damn listings which they oh so cleverly block today.

Re: Howard Lindzon » Are You addicted to the Stock Market? That includes the Iraqi war. I'm quite confident that war could have been averted and that Saddam, a sociopath he may be, could have been brought to terms that would have been good for the US and good for him. Remember, we once were his ally. Ditto with Iran. Do we all know where Iran got their first nuclear reactor? The US under the terrorist Shah's rule. A brutal SOB we supported and a police state which allowed fundamentalism to gain a grip on a once progessive society.

The reality is the US is the latest of colonial powers to play global chess with the countries of the Middle East. We shit on whom we find convenient at the time and leave a mess in our wake in an attempt to influence outcomes. We left Afghanistan after we had managed to defeat the Soviets without really caring about the people or financially helping them. We support Saudi Arabia which persecutes its people. I mean, what the hell do we expect? Honestly? Forty years of aggressive foreign policy.

The Europeans? Well, they allow immigration but then the immigrants are encouraged not to assimilate into society or aren't given citizenship or cannot find work for the masses. So, why are people upset in Europe? Maybe the same reason Americans were upset in New Orleans: they feel shit on and let down. Maybe there is no economic opportunity. Maybe the same reason Watts is a perpetual mess in LA. Do you think those boys would be out staging such hatred if they were all were gainfully employed with decent jobs? Maslow's Hierarchy.

That said, the fundamental basis for the mess and hatred in the Middle East is lack of opportunity for the average person. Thugs rule the countries and they are nothing more than crooked goons who use secret police to terrorize their own people with fear. Aka the Nazis. So, it's easy to convince them the reason for their mess is America who just so happens to do them the courtesy of always sticking our nose in every international conflict because we have an opinion of the outcome.

It's psychology 101. And, if you were in the same situation, you'd be one angry SOB as well. Why? Because regardless of whether radical Islam has a grip, it is allowed to perpetuate itself and gain a hold because people have no opportunity. Hey, how did the Nazis come to power? NO ECONOMIC opportunity post WWI when the allies basically shackled Germany to teach it a lesson. It isn't our fault. But, by sticking our nose in the shit time and again, we make ourselves a convenient scapegoat for the goons running the countries over there.

What's the moral of the story? We aren't going to fix it and our foreign policy should be "walk softly and carry a big stick". Eisenhower was right about the military industrial complex. It freaks me out that signs are brewing that we are showing signs of losing our freedoms, ie police state, all in the name of our own safety.

Concentration of power is never to be trusted. Ever. At its very heart, power is capable of unspeakable acts.

How do we win this war? Maybe by looking inside ourselves. We aren't responsible for the economic mess these people experience but we can change our policy so that we aren't so aggressive that we are involved in every conflict thus providing the goons an opportunity to blame the lack of economic opportunity on us. It's sort of like being in a dysfunctional relationship and deciding you no longer want to be part of it. You can't fix the other person who is dysfunctional but you can stop your own actions from perpetuating the dysfunction. So, what do you do? You leave.

Whew! Have some ice cream and enjoy the weather. lol.

Re: Three words I never thought I would say – “Off to Louisville :) “

Btw, one more comment then I'm off. At least, not for another twenty years when we repeat this stupidity.

Dell will get it right. Apple will never be more than a niche. Why? Dell, Microsoft and others know the corporate market, which has appreciably higher margins, drives consumer market decisions in PCs.
