in DC United: Something Smells at RFK Stadium on Major League Soccer Talk
I think that people need to stop looking at teams like DC United and start looking at how close every single team in MLS is at this moment. Seriously, look at the standings.
The problem is that the Superdraft isn't providing the NUMBER of talented players. (One of the big reasons that DC is failing is because our bench has all the quality of a half masticated burrito). Thing is, that's also the problem with the rest of the teams. MLS has become so spread and even that good teams have Very dry spells, horrible teams acquire one good player and suddenly seem "on fire," and in the end EVERY TEAM IS IN THE HUNT FOR THE PLAYOFFS!
I think the thing that needs to change immediately is the salary cap. Double it. Do it now. Then teams like DC can actually Pay for quality proffessionals from other leagues, (instead of Peralta, straight out of the illustrious Mexican second division.
Now I won't say that DC is blameless; they're not doing a good job. But in this league, it's becoming nearly impossible to do right. I think this shows that the entire league needs revamping. Then, and only then, will United have the ability to put together a truly internationally viable team, with both Well paid proffessionals and players that decided Not to go overseas. But money talks, and equality is no way to run a league

in An American Idea on Major League Soccer Talk
Dude, are you serious?
This doesn't make sense. You say the league is being hurt in quality by the expansion, and your salution is to make an All American Team? I would agree if this meant filling a team with National team players. But we're looking for foreign players not because we're addicted. It's because we simply don't have the depth at home.
Look at DC United, (my team) for example. Most of our vital starters are injured (and foreign). Now, we're airing our our bench, and we're getting destroyed. That's not because they don't have experience, it's because they don't have talent. The average exceptional college athlete is Not exceptional enough. Aside from Quaranta, we're screwed.
And don't tell me that's because we rely to much on foreign players. It's because, when we can't start them, average american players suck. I only hope that the likes of Bradley, Adu, and Altidore make it home at the end of illustrious careers. Then they can be the Foreign influence. Till then, get a brain.

I disagree, because I think Charles Renken is a special case. I think he has plenty of skill, and more power than Freddy, who is a notoriously finesse-bound player. If we could get a real success story in the Premiership, it would greatly improve chances for us cracking the best league in the world. And you're telling me a chance to play with rising Gunner's (even if he never makes the full team) is going to give him a poor early training process?
The way I see it, he has a much greater chance at learning something valuable that he never could in the MLS, and an amazing (and priceless) career boost.
Two examples: Kenny Cooper is looking like a very interesting option over scoreless Ching, and he definetly benefited from his time training with Man U.
Second: Beasley had some easy, fast goals for PSV, where the play wasn't so intense, then played horribly (minus 1 pass) in last World Cup.
Charles Renken isn't getting any worse if he joins Arsenal, and this deal could help everyone involved. Let him go.
