Last night, my wife and I were walking in our neighborhood at about 7:30 p.m. We noticed two “stars” close together toward the western setting sun. The bottom “star” is just a bit smaller than the top, but both shine bright in the twilight. As it turns out, these two objects are actually the sky’s two brightest planets -- Venus and Jupiter (there’s also a fainter nearby star called Spica in the constellation Virgo). While this “conjunction” of these two planets occurs about once a year, there won’t be a Venus-Jupiter conjunction until the year 2008. Venus is the second planet outward from the sun. It's the brighter of these two brilliant worlds. Jupiter is the fifth planet out. It’s about five and 1/2 times farther away from Earth than Venus is right now. Jupiter is farther away, but it shines nearly as brightly as Venus because it’s so huge -- more than 11 times greater in diameter than either Venus or the Earth. Get outside and look up -- it's pretty cool.

I disagree. Why haven't they been doing this since 9/11 - we knew this was a method used in the past (1995). What liquids do you really take on the plane anyway -- check your bag and read a book and order drinks in flight.

NOTHING beats a real tree. the smell, the feel, the life, the cats trying to climb to the top . . . I don't know that I could have Christmas without one. celebrate your pagan roots -- and cut down a tree! besides, these things are farmed and they help local growers especially in western NC. sam, if you're not convince (and of course i know you're not) go buy a potted tree and decorate it, then plant it in your yard. WHAT KIND OF TREE???
