I used to drink Fiji water all the time. It was my favorite. Then I read this article in Fast Company about how it is easier for Americans to get water from Fiji than the poor in Fiji.

Fay, as single, working woman, I couldn't agree more. I've been doing a 9-to-5 cubicle job for almost 8 years now and nothing sounds more appealing to me than to be able to be a full-time wife. To have the opportunity to put all of my effort into supporting my husband, nurturing out marriage and doing things like cooking, cleaning, being creative, volunteering my time, etc ...

Here's my problem with the whole "prosperity gospel." It ignores a BIG part of God's word. Over and over (something like 2,000 times) God talks about the poor. His heart for them. Our responsibility to care for them. Somehow, the whole idea of God using riches as a "blessing" for obedience doesn't make sense with what he actually says in his word. It seems to me that those who believe the prosperity gospel and being rather selective about the parts of God's word they are reading.

Todd, this is a great post! I agree with you - my generation is so quick to write off the traditions of the older generations as irrelevant or outdated. I think there is a lot we can learn from reflecting on the past and the path that God has allowed the Church to take.

1. This assumes that most white evavgelical Protestants will follow Dobson's lead. Not THIS white evangelical Protestant! And I'm sure there are plenty more like me.

2. The second point about risking the credibility of the Christian conservative movement is valid. It angers me that as a Christian, I often get put in the same box as Dobson. Many people don't distingish between the "Christian conservative movement" and simply Christian. My credibility as a Christian is at stake here too.

3. I've never agreed with EVERYTHING that any president stands for ... and I doubt anyone has. In essence what they are saying is that they'd rather elect someone who compromises on many issues just to make their point about one issue. Very mature.

Here's my two cents, for what it's worth...

The reason that Gore (and others) are leading the pack on environmental issues is because of the absence of Christian leaders speaking up. I believe that those in Christian leadership have (generally speaking) completely missed the boat on their responsibility to lead the way in caring for and protecting this place God created for us. Instead, they are busy with other "bigger" issues like homosexuality and abortion. How did we come up with this hierarchy of issues? Every command that God gave us in his Word is of equal importance, despite what the Christian right might have us believe. It's time we start getting as outspoken about environmental issues as we are about protecting the right to the life and the family.

Also, one other thought. In my understanding God is coming to US. He's coming to redeem the earth. Not obliterate it. It seems we'll be here (albeit a redeemed "here") for a long time (eternity) so we should start taking better care of it.

This is actually a relatively new way of thinking for me. A few years ago I read a book that radically changed my perspective on heaven ... I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested. It's called Heaven by Randy Alcorn.

As far as your question ... at the fall of man, the entire creation, including plants and animals and nature itself, in addition to man, was cursed. That leads me to believe that the redemption process includes all of creation as well. Check out Romans 8:19-23. Pretty clear.

The last two chapters of the Bible are my very favorite in all of Scripture. And it's astonishing to recognize the parallels between the new heaven and earth that John describes in Revelation and the heaven and earth that God created in Genesis. Many of the same descriptions and imagery are used in both accounts. Revelation 22:3 is pretty clear to me. It's talking about the end of the curse. Why mention the curse of the "old" earth if we are going to an entirely new place?

And Steven, I realize you were being tongue-in-cheek, but ...

Did you know that homosexuality wasn't the reason God destroyed Sodom? Seriously. Ezekiel 16:49. Sooo ... even with us focusing on the "bigger" issues, we probably still deserve to get destroyed.

As a preamble to my comment: I hate Christianese. I grew up with it. And when I really started to think about the words I was using, I realized the vast majority of them are meaningless to me. But anyway ...

Yes, I have used the words "getting fed" before. I guess this phrase makes sense in terms of Jesus being the Bread of Life. But I think far too often people use that phrase as their justification for leaving a church. (As in "I wasn't getting fed.")

Great post, Todd. I've never really thought about the difference between the two parts of this verse and who finds what easier.

But it's true what you say. I especially love the last sentence ... "I’d also like to think that this would have an impact on the way we share the gospel – starting with affirmation of action rather than condemnation of unbelief."

That's a real ad campaign? That's horrible. VERY poor taste, in my opinion.

I took a bunch of marketing classes in college and one thing that I heard a lot was that it doesn't matter how innovative or creative or catchy your ad is, if it leaves the consumer with a negative impression, the ad will backfire. That negative feeling will be associated with the product.

This one definitely does that.

I usually try to stay out of political discussions, but I'm breaking the rule.

My brother told me that Bishop Robinson (I think he was the one who offered this prayer, right?) said he had been reading inaugural prayers through history and was "horrified" at how "specifically and aggressively Christian they were." He also said "I am very clear that this will not be a Christian prayer, and I won't be quoting Scripture. The texts I hold as sacred are not sacred texts for all Americans, and I want all people to feel that this is their prayer."

I realize I'm basing my opinion on heresay, but if that is true, this prayer makes me uncomfortable. A lot of what he said in this prayer I agree with, but I have a hard time being led in prayer by a man who feels that way.

This is an interesting post, Todd. I'm always torn about how to feel when someone shows up late and then rearranges everyone to accommodate them. I always move, but never want to.

Kind of a sad statement for the movie, though, that this pre-movie incident is what stuck with you.

You're right, Todd. I think it was Paul who said he didn't much care who said it as long as Jesus was being preached, right? We certainly can find Truth in this prayer.

I was just disappointed in Obama's blatant effort to appease anger over his choice of Rick Warren by choosing someone like this guy.

I go as a discipline - it's not always easy to go every week.
I go to be in fellowship with other believers on a regular basis.
I go to learn from someone who has the gift of teaching the Word of God.
I go to put myself in a place where I might be broken, humbled, and instructed.
I go to worship God outside of my regular everyday routine.
