Head over to the black agenda report, Margaret Kimberly wrote a piece where she has a link to it. I will find it and link it.

So, Mike Duncan, who wants to continue as RNC chair, suddenly finds the song offensive. Like, no shit! Where was he when Limbaugh first unleased it MONTHS ago? Awww shucks, I forgot...they were trying to win an election by any means necessary. LOL! Who does Mike Duncan really think he is trying to fool? Does he really believe that we are like the poor white people in the Appalachian mountains who they use for votes during election season and then leave them to wallow in poverty and ignorance when it's all over?
Puhleeeeze!
Here's what's up? The people up in the GOP have themselves all convinced that the raw stats - which means absolutely nada - coming out of California's Prop 8 battle puts them in real contention for the black vote. So convinced are they that they have a shot at peeling away the black vote from the Democratic Party, last week on Lehrer's report, some conservative guy boldly suggested that PE Obama's choice of Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inauguration, was a way to keep the black folks happy. He cited the Prop 8 issue as proof. I was like, WTF? Black people couldn't give a fuck about Rick Warren because they don't know who he is. But guess what? It seems that they are about to because, according to Field Negro, Rick Warren was just invited to Ebenezer Baptist Church to celebrate MLK Day. Can you believe that sh*t y'all? I just wanted to retch when I read it. I neither like Rick Warren's viewpoints nor do I trust the man.
Concomitant with that, consider Newt Gingrich's very transparent attempts to become a "friend" of black people - he wants to be Cao's liaison to the black community, lambasting the RNC for the Obama-Blago ad etc. - all this on the heels of the passage of Prop 8.
Looksto me like they are after the black evangelicals, who they've always ignored, to build up a new Republican coalition, which could at the same time stymie any progressive efforts in the LGBT community, if the black democrats like John Lewis, Joseph Lowery et al don't start speaking out. And, yeah, if the LGBT leadership doesn't start informing and educating the black community about their quest for equal rights and mutual interests, like fighting HIV etc.
Thanks PE Obama! You've just let the Republican foxes into the Democratic Party's henhouse! I hope it works out for ya!
In the meantime, I say this to black folks: Don't be fooled! Don't let the GOP get their hands up under your skirts with working for it. Don't let them use you...

We may not like Rick Warren but a lot of people do. He's been selectively strategizing for more than two decades to get to this point. Bernice King personally invited Warren if I'm not mistaken. This is a power grab, pure and simple and it was a long-planned for goal. This was no accident. These are religious 'conservatives', who are opposed to homosexuality, abortion, stem cell research and a host of other things. They are not above using their religious platform for political gain. The question is where is the 'liberal' equivalent of a Rick Warren? Here's yet another white man who was groomed and planned for this rise in power. Where are the Black people, where are the Black women specifically? This is part of the reason why Obama went after the Evangelicals. The interesting thing about Warren to me, anyway is that 40 years ago he would've been a Southern strategist through and through in my opinion and would've been right up there with Strom Thurman and Bull Connor. I could be wrong but....

Wow...great info. MLk's family and associates have done a horrible job at spreading his true legacy. I am telling you.
Why are they inviting Rick Warren, what is he going to say?
Also, Yes, the GOP has actually been trying to exploit black churchgoers for a while. I guess they are picking up steam now that they feel they have something.
I am pretty tired of blacks allowing themselves to be used as pawns and scapegoats for political gain. Some black people just don't get it.
However why is it that no one has reported that their is a study of stats that are going to be released that shows that black support for Prop 8 was more 57% than 70% or even 68%. That will put black support more in line with latinos whites and asians who all voted for the proposition.

babyming, would you at least agree that any US President should look at both sides when dealing with this issue of Israel and Palestine? Is Palestine completely innocent? Is Israel completely innocent? Is a life of an Israeli child worth as much as a Palestinean one, and vice versa?

When people see other people (of another religion) as less than human, then no the lives will not be equal.
Over the past few weeks, Hamas has sent dozens of rockets into Israeli territory. Now the Israelis strike back and kill hundreds. It is all a convoluted mess because each side thinks that God is on their side.

Hello, yes I agree that any President should look at both sides, and I don't agree with everything that Israel does. I just don't want to see my liberal friends start acting like people at a Sarah Palin rally, pumped up with hate. For the past months, Israel has been saying, "if you keep launching rockets at us, we will retaliate." What is Israel supposed to do, just sit back and take the rockets? Gaza is a separate country, bordered by Israel and Egypt, and I think Israel and Egypt need to work together and encourage the people of Gaza to stop making war and start getting their act together. Maybe Obama can give more aid to Gaza (the US already gives some) and station US troops in Gaza. I'm not familiar with all the details. I do think Israel needs to withdraw from more occupied territory, which it already did in Gaza, but I also think the rocket fire from Gaza really needs to stop. After so much Republican hate, I don't want to see my liberal friends jump all over Israel. But I definitely agree there are 2 sides to this, and it may take a guy as intelligent as Obama to make progress in the Middle East.

BTW, one more thing about the CK interview last night with Dominic Carter. Towards the end of the interview, Dominc repeatedly said that he could not believe that Ms. Kennedy agreed to be interviewed by him without any "pre-existing conditions". Too funny! Preconditions, Dominic, preconditions, bro! LOL!

Man, it sure is fun to watch Markos lose his sh*t over the possibility that Caroline Kennedy is appointed as NY's junir senator. Check out his latest whine. Ridiculous, right?
First of all, the lady didn't say what he claimed she said. In fact, the lady completely ignored the question. If that ain't political skills, I don't know what is. And, second, earlier in the month, Ms. Kennedy did indicate a desire to run for the seat if she was not appointed. But, let's say she did in fact mean that she would not run for the seat if not appointed as Morkos thinks she meant, what would be so wrong with that, mmmm? To support an incumbent who, hopefully, is doing a good job and was not intended to be a seat-warmer? Nothing, in my view. Because in my recent memory, a Democratic primary for that Senate seat gives an advantage to the Republicans.
Poor Markos!

The cost of silence being acceptance.

That was a constructive viewpoint, perhaps it did not agree with the focus you wanted?
I admit, I could have phrased it more constructively and typically I might have...but today ..I am just outraged at the audacity of homosexuals to label Obama a bigot.
That is unconscionable to me. I do not even agree with Obama's stance POLITICALLY on gay marriage and DOMA, even if we do agree personally, as he thinks marriage is between a man and a woman too..
So, for them to excoriate Obama with HATEful language is intolerable and I am not of the temperment today to express viewpoints as constructively as I am capable of.
Sorry...pray for me.

There is one thing that gay leaders and advocates could clarify that would help me when I approach my church congregants: Is this a fight for the M-word or is this a fight for equal rights? Would the gay community be satisfied with a state-by-state definition of what marriage should be, but then fight for a federal civil unions giving you the same rights as heterosexual married persons?(I hope I am clear by what I mean here.)

Neither. It is a fight to create an upheaval in the social structure of a civil society and subject children to deviant conduct that has been sanctioned by the majority of society.

It is true that we should disagree with PE Obama in a way that respects the office of the presidency, but I would not go so far as to say that if someone acts in a manner that we deem disrespectful, it is because he is black. We should remind ourselves to be very careful about going down that path, especially when there is no evidence to support such an assertion.

Well, then what else could it be? Obama is the staunchest supporter of gay rights to ever occupy the WH...so what is it, if not race?
Bush, and his daddy did not support any of the gay agenda, and they never once were subjected to such HATEFUL language and character slurs, so why is Obama different?
It is not good enough that he supports DOMA AND civil Unions...supporting those makes him a BIGOT?
Don't even try to delude us into thinking this is anyTHING other than race.
Evidence you want?
Look no further than how blacks were immediately made the scapegoat for Prop8 failure!! Despite the numbers being completely improbable if anyone had even done the most cursory of a analysis.
Nope, let's blame it on the BLACKS!!
Let's SHYT all over this President and prove to him...he is BLACK too!!

While I empathize with the writer's frustrations, I strongly disagree with the his/her characterization of PE Obama. That type of rhetoric is just not helpful, Rick Warren or not.
Having said that, I do not think that the invitation of Rick Warren, to the inaugural festivities, is "hugely insignificant", as you have stated above. By saying that, you run the risk of marginalizing our displeasure with PE Obama's decision. Furthermore, you refer to gays as "deviants"?. I'm sorry, but that type of rhetoric is not helpful either.

Blacks have been marginalized and blamed since Nov. 5th regarding gay issues. By continuing to blame "blacks" for the reason why Prop. 8 passed and why gays have no rights, you risk alienating a group from your cause totally.
whiterosebuddy
Yes, I referred to their sexual conduct as deviant. If they can use inflammatory language to excoriate Obama, then turnaround is fair play. I am intolerant of the nasty homophobic language gays use like toddlers in a temper tantrum when trying to get their way. I no longer will be any more courteous or respectful of the tactics of their political agenda and will return fire with fire.
Name me ONE President, who has ever been subjected to such a demeaning headline. Name ONE!! What makes this even far more egregious is that Obama is the strongest advocate ever on gay issues to ever be elected as President...and THIS is how they support him?
Nope. Tired of their deviant needs being elevated to a deviant level of noise based on their disproportionately dominating our newsrooms.

Dear Gay Leaders,
There is a grassroots out here waiting to be mobilized in order to spread your message in an orderly and civil way, proactively. When you think it's time to start the hard work of outreach and education and not assume that every person is automatically going to fall your way, I am ready to work on your behalf to engage and inform my church, and the larger community, about the challenges of the gay community as it relates to equality, discrimination etc.
While I stand in solidarity with you over the misguided choice of Rick Warren, by PE Obama, to deliver the invocation at his inauguration, I will not stand silently by while you go around throwing "fire-bombs" like this. Obama, 'a rational-sounding sort of bigot'? You must be out of your fucking mind! It is just untrue and unfair.
Yes, you maintain the right to articulate your frustration with the way things currently are, but I would suggest that doing it in this manner only serves to harden the hearts and minds of the very people who can help you or those whose minds can be changed.
Just sayin',

Obama as a black man will never be afforded the stature and respect of the Presidency!
Many of us have experienced this in our professional lives, espedially if you work in corporate.
All of sudden when you get the position, it no longer has the authority and reach which it held prior to you gaining the promotion. You are window dressing and just a black face holding down a space, until the next melaninchallenged rightfully entitled person can be moved into the spot again.

I just read a letter to the editor in my local paper, which said that black people ought to be ashamed of themselves for not supporting gay rights, and blacks morally have no reason to be against gay rights since 80% of black children are illegitimate. It goes on to say that "we" (gays) supported getting a black face in the White House, therefore black people OWE gay people their support on gay rights.
Yeah, THAT'S the way to get black support on gay rights. Not.

That is god awful. Time magazine needs to seriously consider why they are sanctioning these types of articles.
All the crap the evangelicals did and Bush did and NOT once, was there EVER a prominently featured article where he was proclaimed to be a BIGOT...not once in EIGHT friggin YEARS!!
Maybe now people will understand what I meant about gays being disproportionately represented in the field of journalism and broadcasting. That is why there is such an unrelenting bashing of Obama going on over a hugely insiginificant invitation. If this was policy it might well be understood. Hopefully, they will use all all their political goodwill on Warren and be completely ignored when there is a significant issue. I for one will ignore this special interest group in terms of their political agenda.
Homosexuals are not a great enough percent of the population to have such issues blaring from headlines and out the mouths of talking heads. They do predominat in newsrooms and newspaper editorial rooms.
We were tipped off to the virulent racism in the group and how knee jerk racist many individuals who call themselves gay are when Prop8's failure was assigned to blacks as the reason it failed.
Obama is black and they are going to demean and sully him in the interest of their deviant sexual conduct.
Then, in what is their o so ironic and never ending distortion of reality to compensate for the deeply deviant conduct on their part, what will they do and say? They will demand to be treated as 'equals' they will demand 'HUMAN rights' and they will demand everyone else be tolerate as they turn the world upside down to fit in the deranged mindsets.created so they themselves do not have to be accountable for their actions...and everyone else does and everyone else is to blame and needs to be tolerant...just not them.

@T:
PE's choice of Rick Warren was not misguided. Remember that Rick Warren's position on gay relationships and on gay marriage is not the fringe view within Christian orthodoxy, it is the mainline view. I suppose he could have chosen someone with the opposite perspective but he would have to go out of his way to do so since most Christian Pastors also oppose gay marriage. Any pastor supporting gay marriage when scripture strictly forbids gay relationships would be going outside the pale of orthodoxy. Of course, within the church, the pastor has an obligation to teach and preach the scripture and to uphold it as truth which should be modeled and followed by his "flock." One should not expect Rick Warren or any other pastor to go "rogue" with the text.
Further, Obama and Biden have both said that they oppose gay marriage so I don't know that Obama's choice of Rick Warren was wrong based on his own personal beliefs. However, I assume that the invite was not based on his personal feelings as much as it was an extension of an olive branch to evangelicals who distrust and dislike Obama. He probably didn’t need to extend the branch and I’m not sure what it’ll accomplish since I don’t think he’ll sway the conservative evangelicals. (Interestingly, Warren is respected but would not be considered the most conservative of evangelicals. The very fact that he's agreeing to pray at the Inauguration has caused other evangelicals to criticize him.)
I think that gay rights advocates need to understand that the tension between their movement and the church will not be resolved or reconciled because the only way to resolve it within the church would be to ignore or rationalize away biblical teaching. I realize that the rights afforded to gays by society must be respected just as the rights afforded other citizens are respected. I believe that Rick Warren understands that too. However, when it comes to his own conduct or the positions that he will take on issues of controversy, those must be governed by a biblical standard. This is why he could not condone or advocate for gay marriage, nor could he officiate them himself. Why would a pastor do something that he felt would lead others to judgment?

About Rick Warren. I note that PE Obama has offered a response to our objection of the choice of Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inaugural ceremony. It could be that my anger is clouding my reason, but I couldn't decide whether he was being sincere or patronizing, "Aw shucks! You crazy kids are so 'noisy and opinionated'; I've made my decsion so live with it."
Today, a few days removed, I am still disappointed that PE Obama chose to give such a prominent platform to a man whose views are diametrically opposed to mine, and many others. Many here have suggested that the reason many white Democrats are upset is that they think that they gave the black man a chance and now he is not doing their bidding. Look, blacks like myself, are truly flabbergasted by this choice as well. Of course, we are pleased that Dr. Lowery will present another kind of voice at the festivities but that doesn't take away the core point: I, we, fought hard to make this man our president - through snow, sleet, rain and sunshine - and we loath to share our moment of joy with an unrepentant bigot.
Of course, I appreciate PE Obama's desire to create a climate for reasoned dialogue among people with opposing viewpoints but I, personally, am not confident that Rick Warren and his ilk are open to viewpoints other than their own. Maybe, I am being too pessimistic, but when I look at it from that perspective, Rick Warren's presence at the ceremony is an exercise in futiltiy, and, therefore, extremely frustrating. I hope I am wrong. Maybe this will open some hearts and minds to issues that I, and others in the Democratic Party, care about. We'll see.
As for the question that was posed here: What will happen after Rick Warren says the invocation? My answer? Well, certainly, the world will not come to a crashing end but that shouldn't discount the displeasure that many feel about having him there. It also does nothing to quell my growing fear that this may, MAY, become a first in a series of accomodations that the Democratic leadership are willing to make in order to appease the Right, at the expense of the base, with nothing to show for it.
Just my 2 cents.

We'll see.

Besides from Culture war issues (gay marriage and abortion): What's your beef with Rick Warren? And to continue on something started by other JJPers regarding this Warren thing, let me ask you something: What do you think will happen when he gives the invocation?

I'm not discounting your displeasure, but not everyone is going to be pleased about the choices he makes. I haven't been happy about some of the Cabinet picks (Hillary Clinton in particular), but I don't make threats about witholding my support before the man can even get sworn in. To me that reeks in pettiness.
You also point out that you have a fear of democratic leadership appeasing the right at the expense of the base. That makes more sense to me versus saying you are getting slapped in the face or all these other platitudes. My take is a wait and see approach, b/c in the end, no one knows what is going to happen, but we all know that there will be policies that we wont' agree with. I can't get all up in arms until I see the results of the Cabinet picks and see what he does w/ the Democratic majority in the House and Senate. I just can't.

There are many blacks, as well, who are not flabbergasted by the choice. who see nothing worth ranting about for this sustained amount of time. It just is not anymore significant than McClurkin being on the gosepel tour.

I wanted to repost this from Andrew Sullivan's site, because it succintly sums up a lot of what I feel about this whole Rick Warren issue"

"At the risk of sounding completely daft, I don't see the big deal about Rick Warren. I mean, here is a preacher who will give an invocation for a president who is in favor of repealing the DADT policy, the DOMA act, and wants to pass the Matthew Shepard Act. A president who is not in favor of a Marriage Protection Amendment to the Constitution, who believes that gay marriage is a state issue, opposed Proposition 8, and has indicated that that their administration will be completely gay friendly.
If there is anyone in this equation who should be uncomfortable about being at the inauguration, it should be Rick Warren."

Let the focus of our angst stay on the decision to choose Rick Warren to commence the ceremonies, OK? Because this supposed 'man of God' does not share our values and selecting him is an affront to most, if not all, of the Democratic base.
Now if you're looking for a black religious leader, Dr. Lowery will do the benediction. That's alright by me.

Listen, my comment was not an opening for you to follow this line of argument. I have seen your posts and I do not share your view that the cabinet should be chock full of African Americans. I am very proud of the diverse cabinet that he has assembled and could not be more pleased that he has chosen some African Americans to be at his side. We have an African American president so don't get greedy now, sweetie! Pace yourself...

i probably should have replied to CPL but i'm sick of being attacked for having a damn opinion that runs counter to the Obama hero worship on this board. you're whole "don't get greedy" mindset is the problem with many black people. why are we only satisfied with crumbs when we are entitled to a meal? just because we got a black president means i'm supposed to be satisfied? screw that! hispanics lobbied and damn near demanded that obama put hispanics in his cabinet (google it if you're not too lazy) and look what it got them. what do we do? not a damn thing because we're just so happy to see a black face in the white house that we just get besides ourselves and basically say "whew lawd, we's got a black president, i's happy now." like i said in my "whacked" posts before, the cabinet, just like the choice of rick warren, sends a message to people, and the lack of AAs in the cabinet, in my opinion, sends a jacked up message the the 95% of black people that put Obama in office. i'm in the minority here obviously here, but i'd actually like to see to more qualified, competent black people in power and i'm not going to apologize for that!!! you would think that more of us would feel the same but if you go by this board, i guess not. silly me, i thought maybe a black president would expand his pool to look at those who are often overlooked but i was wrong and i'm disappointed. also i never said his cabinet should be chock full of african-americans nor did I expect that. i don't have some magical number in mind but 1 definitely is not acceptable. the problem is that we accept limits, more so than any of group of people. that's probably why we have the problems we have now. we got a black man as president. that's fine. what about a black woman president some time in the near future? oh no, i have to pace myself and don't want to get greedy. good god.

So you think that after Rick Warren's invocation, everybody's gonna just love PE Obama and the nation will be healed and we're all just gonna hold hands and sing Kumbaya? Of course, I don't have the power to reverse his decision to have Rick Warren at the inaugural ceremony but I sure as hell don't feel so charitable as to be deferent to him all the time. In my humble opinion, this decision is a huge misstep.

Black people need to collectively be more organized. Remember the Black Elite didn't support Obama nor did the Civil Right's Victimology Crowd. So who was left? We need to take back our political power from the fools and the dividers. We can't keep waiting for someone to do the right thing or cry foul. Obama didn't wait he focused. It's what we need to do.

I wonder if he's going to be sympathetic to us at all. Latest cabinet picks: all white and hispanic. i know i can't be the only one who is seriously disappointed with this.
