Andy this is really helpful info - thanks for this post. I have a question about my lingering concerns with removing the nofollow tag: sometimes there is a fine line between a blog and a splog. What if I let through an outbound link that ends up being a blacklisted link farm? How would that effect my Google juice?

Ironically I found this review link on Digg - it's funny how an older post can be so dang helpful. :)

I really love the concept, implementation and functionality of Terapad - and I agree with nearly all of your reservations about the site as well (especially the SEO limitations).

Also, what I'm really looking for is something as easy as this to set up, but self-hosted. The closest I have found is Joomla, but I frankly don't have the time to learn it. Have you come across anything like this by any chance?

Honestly, Andy, I wonder how much we have unknowingly contributed to the problem with Google Analytics?

Perhaps in hindsight, Analytics seems to act much more like a Trojan Horse than a "free service for the community".

We let them in, we gave them all the info they needed, and now, they are using it against us.

I start looking for a new analytics solution today. I'll pay for it if I have to. I'm done giving the devil access to my personal diary. ;)

Well, I did end up taking a ding today - on my home page, which ironically enough not only has no text link ads, it has no advertising at all.

I only went down from a PR5 to a PR4 - but still it irks me. My own blog has stayed the same at a PR5.

I can only guess at this point that the inbound links going to my home page have taken a beating and I'm feeling a trickle-down effect. So you can play by the rules and still feel the G-slap. :|

Frankly I don't buy his excuse for a second, especially after the BlogWorld founders casually recapped the phone conversation they had with him the day BEFORE he was supposed to speak.

Honestly, I see it quite simply - the blogosphere has supported Michael and we have propelled him to the top of the charts with our links. And he doesn't seem to think that his commitments to us are worth honoring.

I'm really not "pissed" - just really shocked that one of us would to that to our own community.

*Extremely disappointed.*

James, thanks so much for a great article and an interesting read! For all the things I have done with eMoms at Home, there are countless other ideas I have half-pursued over the years and that I let flounder.
I think when the time is right, you just know to M.O.V.E.

Also, you will very likely need all that research at some point down the road - I'm a firm believer that nothing happens accidentally! ;)

Actually, Ben, I did want to add an 11th Step - PSYCHING yourself up.

It took me a long time to talk myself into believing I could handle having 7 people depend on me for income, that I could manage this huge of a project, and that I could handle the kind of success that I hoped for, or that I could even pull it all off!

I sometimes feel like I've fallen off of a cliff, but I know where I'm landing and I'm enjoying ride and looking forward to the landing. :)

Well, digitalnomad, I would venture to say that my site has never really been considered a "mommy blog" (30%+ readers are dads) and we don't sell anything on the site.

We just provide content to help entrepreneurial parents succeed in business - it has a lot broader appeal than you're thinking.

eMoms at Home is an entrepreneurial blog for work at home parents - I can't say I write a ton about tech stuff - it's more about keeping yourself motivated when you're at home and don't feel like writing about tech stuff that day. :)

Usually, when friends fight, both of them apologize. You have done that. They haven't - unless I am missing something?

I have to dissent on this topic. There is a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE between a spam link and a quality relevant ad purchase.

Webmasters pay to build traffic, via salaries, PPC, and marketing costs. Why should they be penalized for being compensated for driving quality traffic?

Advertisers spent millions of dollars buying ads to drive relevant traffic. Why should they be penalized for promoting quality content?

Call me dumb, but where's the problem here?

Why the heck any company would add clicks to a user experience is beyond me! Isn't that usability lesson 101 from like 1995?! :)

Plus, I agree that Digg should not try to be something it isn't. We don't need 10 more Facebooks - businesses can certainly evolve, but trying to be like someone else undermines their own authority in the space.

Just an FYI - Yahoo hosting will not allow you access to your .htaccess file.

I have found it to be a big pain, because I have two old feed addresses that I can't track with FeedBurner. They just sit there, getting thousands of hits, and I have NO way to know who is doing what.

As far as I know, the only way to get these feed subscribers into FeedBurner is with a redirect in my .htaccess file. If there is another way, I'm all ears.

Sounds a lot like the prescription drug companies here in the states. We can get medications from Canada and Mexico imported for a tiny fraction of the cost that the companies can get away with charging here.

But then they lobby the government with scare tactics saying that we can't be sure of the safety of drugs produced outside of the country (when in some cases their manufacturing standards are higher than our own).

It's all in a day of business, eh? ;)

Hey Cucirca, have you been experiencing any Alexa weirdness lately? After more than a month of daily 30-45K rankings, lately every other day my site is totally going off the radar and dipping below 100K. It's especially weird, because it's doing it on some really high traffic days (as in, major Digg!!).

Do you know what the heck is going on?? :(
