in PARKING IS JOB ONE FOR ROBERT GARCIA on The District Weekly
I would rather see the focus be on the education of residents to adopt a new lifestyle that puts less of a focus on parking and brings more attention to a need for a built out urban environment. This environment would involve the idea of complete streets. A beautiful and safe downtown combined with the transportation resources of a complete street model is more needed then just plain old parking.
By having the driving force of this exercise be parking, the focus is too heavy on the symptoms and not on the core problem, which is our reliance on the automobile.

in COURTYARD LOFTS REUSE WINS A NATIONAL AWARD on The District Weekly
Take notice long beach planners and anyone else involved in the design and building of Long Beach. You won't see projects like City Place and the horrible Aqua Towers coming up on any architectural radars. Stop having the design of the city be influenced by people that still think art deco is really neat and should be replicated today. Maintain and preserve our history, but push us forward. When given a chance reuse what was once there instead of tearing it down, but don't replicate what was once there. Intention should not be to create museum pieces, but to be inspired by the history and have a focus on the future.

Downtown, thanks for writing; you make some interesting points. I think it's worth noting that recreating the past as it was once done--pouring massive streamlined concrete fronts a la Acres of Books or the KFOX building--is increasingly impossible today given the way we build buildings now, and how costs have risen. So we are indeed faced with the choices of A) not tearing down what remains; B) creatively reusing what we have, as in the case of Courtyard Lofts; or C) trying to recreate the past using the technologies and perspectives we now have, as in the case of some of the newer pharmacies on Long Beach Boulevard.

I hope you do pursue fighting the ticket Russ, you have my support for sure. I spend a lot of time riding my bike around the LBC in the same fashion. I try and stay to the right as far as possible but down certain east/west streets the lanes are too narrow to fit both a bike and a car so you're better off just riding in the lane so that you don't get pinched.
I know the city talks of being the most progressive bicyle riding city in the US so it should educate its police force about what is legal versus illegal and learn to support cyclists of sizes, styles, etc. It's a shame to read this story. I would love to hear any updates.

Mike, i don't think the commander was saying there is no crime in the DT or that there is just the perception. I understand his point quite well, you're just spinning it.
Heck, fights happen everywhere. There are fights happening all the time in Belmont Shore, that place is just as scary at night sometimes if not worse.

Hi Gloria,
I attended the November meeting in City Council chambers regarding the update on the Pine Avenue Entertainment District pilot plan. I listened to several residents talk about crime and how they had personally made calls to the police for assistance. I heard the police officer respond that they had no record of any police calls in that person's area. The discussion then centered on how the frustrated residents could substantiate in the future how they had actually made the calls for police service. Soon afterwards, one of the residents asked the police about crime in the entertainment district and how it compared. Commander Johnson responded, "how about we talk about retail?" He then explained that "violent crime has been coming down over the past 2 years." While he may be correct about that portion of the overall crime picture, he did not answer the question. The real answer is crime surrounding the entertainment district is one of the biggest problems in Long Beach. That is not perception. That is bore out by the police statistics.
So why leave the residents with the impression that everything is OK and that there are no worries? The city doesn't want to talk about it because it may cause businessees to go away and property values to diminish, all resulting in less City tax revenue. Why should residents have to learn first hand by getting mugged before they are made aware of the truth, that Pine Avenue is a dangerous place with multiple crimes reported nightly. That's just the reported crimes. How many go unreported? Personally, I'd rather not sit in a circle holding hands wishing for all the bad people to go away. I'd rather the cold facts be out in the open so that we can talk about dealing with the problem. However, that will never occur if you only want to talk about "perceptions."
Yeah, I live in Belmont Shore. And, the city is also trying to turn my neightborhood into an entertainment district like Pine Avenue. Though nowhere near the crime of Pine Avenue, Belmont Shore is seeing an increase in the same kind of late night violence common to Pine Avenue. Moreover, we still have retail in Belmont Shore. I'd prefer to not wait until the City has driven off all of our retail like Pine Avenue before acting on the real problems.

City officials just don't get it. It's a simple lesson of economics that you could learn from any local crack dealer in the LBC. Your first hit might be free, but from there on out you're hooked and paying. City officials just likes to keep giving it out for free. Come on Long Beach, stand up for your self and sell your crack for full price like every other self respecting city seems to be able to do.

Van Dijs. You can count my girl and i in for supporting the theater. Thanks for having the vision to keep the things that make long beach going successful. I'll definitely help spread the word as well.
I like the ideas being shared here and i've echoed the same thoughts in the past. that empty corner, great possible park location. developers probably can't make it make sense anyways. push the city for that, it would provide a great connector that the neighborhood needs. bike racks, I also back that. long beach needs to wake up and smell the pedal power that exists in this city.

Venus. that's the best advice on this board. the rest is really just an entertaining waste of time. i deploy the same tactics in my neighborhood and it's the only thing that keeps my sanity that i would otherwise lose if i sat around waiting for politicians, budgets and all that other crap to do things officially.
LBR, you want ideas. Here's mine. Get the city to draft an ordinance that says you can't develop anything commercial in that area. Create no value in the land except for value to the people. then buy out the land from whoever owns it and spend some money to beautify it, create some walking paths, bike paths, nature centers, etc. Screw the short term homedepot money, collect the money in the long run by creating demand for a city that believes in its people and its environment and puts them first for a change. stand up for yourself do things for the right reasons and that will create demand in this city that can be leveraged into the right type of developments that make sense and provide true value. stop taking damn shortcuts.
power to the people, hoohah, fsu!!

Andy, i totally agree with you except for the part about the AMC theatre. I really hope that place closes down and turns into anything (well not anything) other then the ghetto ass theatre it is. that place provides the worst movie experience of any spot i've ever been to.
as for the jazz and blues place, i look forward to it opening as well. although its faux exterior bugs the crap out of me.

in FROM LBREPORT.COM: COURT RULES AGAINST HOME DEPOT IN WETLANDS on The District Weekly
LBR. I hope that we're all reasonable people here. But as you can see this is definitely not a polarizing issue on this site. So you're fighting for "improved landscaping, tax revenue, and shopping convenience". Nobody in their right mind except for a shortsighted politician and their economic development team would ever agree that a home depot/shopping center would be the best bet in that area.
Ideas like that continue to rob long beach of the character that it still has. I like others am happier looking at swamplands and empty tanks and would rather have that be my visual then looking at at another homedepot mega complex designed in the latest irvinesque motif.

so lemme get this straight, you're against bird watchers, nature and would rather see development because you think the tax revenue will save this city. sheez, you should run for city council. there should be a law against people like you living in the city. or you should be taxed for having lame ideas.

not a fan of passport. the broadlind cafe is the only spot i can think of that had a shot of really becoming a cultural institution for the east artist village. meaning a place where locals hung out, created second offices for the creative class, etc, etc. nothing else has this flavor.
why does the east artist village continue to just drag along and never really improve. i might suggest that the district do a story on that...an expose of sorts.

super bummed about this. does anyone know what the reason is for them shutting down besides what i assume the obvious to be, lack of revenue. just wondering if their rents were being raised or something like that.
i was digging this place too...if anything i would love to see the basement go down in flames for being lame and places like this stick around.
this part of down goes up and down all the time, i always wonder why??

good one juan. you really got me there. soccer is only the biggest sport in the world played widely in the richest of countries and the poorest of the poor. and sure, they always make sure to play on a real soccer field, because after all that's where you're supposed to play soccer right?! perhaps the next time you a dad and his son playing catch in the park you should tell them to "cut out that nonsense" and find a baseball field. god forbid if a nerf football breaks out in a public park. the wrath of juan the unorganized sport hater is going to strike down upon you.
thanks for pointing the spotlight on your own stupidity. the podium is free if you would like to take another crack at it sporto.

to jimbo, stop being such a hater. i personally love that it's a gateway for all different parts of downtown long beach. like someone else said, attacking this guy's character is just callous.
at juan, congratulations for another really lame comment. you're complaining because people are playing pick-up soccer games inside chavez park??!! isn't that part of what you do in a park. and that park is pretty big...plenty of room for everyone to stretch out. there's a group of guys that play makeshift soccer games at bluff park that i see quite often. and i'm telling you, every time i see them it just makes my blood boil, playing soccer in the park is just wrong wrong wrong. please stop activating the park you bad little soccer players, so that they bums, bangers and addicts can get their park back.
to everyone else, great comments. i'm proud to share the streets and parks with you.

jimbo. you should try moving out to the suburbs. ever been up and down ocean blvd by chance? A much busier stretch with people enjoying the open green space and guess what, not dying from toxic fumes. playing soccer, running, bbqing, reading, lounging, it's all there. What about Bixby Park, which is surrounded by streets on every side. Even has a street running through the middle of it.
go for it brian. i think this is a great idea. this roseman guy sounds like a goof with low self esteem and something to prove. he's like the bouncer at the club that won't let you in because you remind him of that guy in high school that stole his girlfriend. i have a good idea long beach, fire this guy and put somebody in place that will sign off on it. i've driven through this intersection plenty of times and it always seems confusing to me. i can't see traffic being worse with this change and it's not like people taking shortcuts through neighborhoods is anything new for long beach or any other crowded city around LA for that matter. give me a break.
to sum it up, nice work ulasheffski. and to roseman, go stick your dick in someone else's mash potatoes.

if you think a football stadium will be the smoke and mirrors this city needs to make people forget about all it's issues, you're sorely mistaken.
