in eBay and StumbleUpon rumour still alive on Mathew's comments
IF stumble upon can sort out their targeting, it could be great. We played with it at FreshBooks and it drove tons of traffic, but it was not very targeted and the mindset of people when they use the tool is just to see something and carry on.

If you could use it like search and say "I am stumbling for XYZ" when you need something, things could get interesting.

Thanks Glen. For what it's worth I did a quick and dirty screencast of the timesheet redesign. Worth a look for anyone interested:

Just for the sake of accuracy, FreshBooks has completely redesigned it's time tracking service...it's now pretty sweet for invoicing AND time-tracking.

in DemoCamp 12 — a packed house on Mathew's comments
Mathew - kudos to you for being out there in the community...From the community's perspective it is absolutely wonderful to see a representative from Canada's largest national newspaper at these events. I've now been to a few events in California (mixers, socials, etc) and had the opportunity to meet Rafe and Dan Farber who attend these sorts of events in San Fran and Palo Alto...at first I was blown away by this, but like you they just love the technology and the people and their involvement in these "little" events helps fuel the machine which is the valley – something Toronto desperately needs as it continues to elevate its game in the technology world.

Re your blog: I love the redesign...congrats!

in Project Time Tracking Tools on Tom Markiewicz
Thanks Tom...it's been exceeding our expectations...for example, invoices sent via the US post to Europe (i.e. the U.K.) are getting there in four days. We get them in Canada in three to four...I'm sort of amazed that the International pieces are moving so fast. The US mail is moving fast/faster too :)

Anyway, thanks again.

Tom - delighted to see you are using FreshBooks and realizing the benefits of having the two apps work together - it's always great to hear that kind of feedback.

Just wanted to mention a couple things. One is we have an API (and a new version it coming soon) and we welcome/encourage other time track solutions to use it so their clients can generate invoices. The other thing is we have some pretty interesting things in store for our time sheet. We a redesigning it to significantly improve it's usability, and when we do we'll be building it so individuals and groups can work together on the same project from separate FreshBooks accounts....so no more logging into multiple accounts to work on multiple projects if you are a freelancer who works with multiple people. We are pretty excited about it and you can learn more about it here.

in Nick Carr is a smart guy - but he’s wrong on Mathew's comments
I was telling some folks the other day about how I attended the TorCamp conference. TorCamp was a really informal conference (the "unconference") that really encouraged dialog from the 20 or so people in each workshop, NOT just the person leading the workshop. I was amazed at how how many smart people there are in a room at events like that. Normally you only here from the one person at the front of the room at conferences...

Change is afoot and there is room for unlimited voices in the blogoshere. Seems like some people don't want to embrace that change...

in Joel warns entrepreneurs on Scobleizer
The odds are stacked against you as an entreprenuer to begin with. The odds of successfully flipping are even slimmer than the odds that you can build a viable business. Building to flip is hard to justify in my books...

Transparency surrounding what is recorded would be great. Like the use of cookies, EDUCATION about the use of this data (i.e. IP addresses) and the value added reasons for storing it (i.e. serving local content, GoggleMAps giving you distances and driving directions) needs to begin.

in Well done, Dan — failure is educational on Mathew's comments
I'm curious to see what he does next - whether he tries something else or goes back to working for someone else.

He's clearly learned a lot; much of it will be applicable to his next venture(s).

For me I know I cut my teeth organizing an event. Lost a pile of money the first year, was profitable for the next six (having broken even again in year three). I learned so much in years one and two about how to live and succeed (read learned about entrepreneurial lifestyle) when building something. Dan's learned this now too...again, curious to see if he applies it.
