Like you, for years, I had been having doubts about Christianity. However, it wasn't until several factors, particularly going back to college, that I realized how error ridden the book is.

Like you I realize that there is a whole wide world out there ready to be explored. Christianity keeps us bound to a certain belief and keeps us there with fear. It is like being trapped in an abusive relationship.

I identify with you completely. I too am African American and a Christian deconvert. Furthermore, am also gay. I couldn't be MORE abominable according to my devoutly christian, southern baptist, family members.

It really sickens me that Christianity is so intrinsic to our cultural identity.
Granted, yes, the entire Civil rights movement was born inside of the black church. However, we have also used this religion to be intolerant towards each other, especially in the realm of sexual identity. The irony doesn't elude me that there has ALWAYS been a gay presence in the African American church. Every choir director in church history has been a gay man(with a few exceptions).
I have vowed never to set foot inside of another black church until my funeral. I don't hate myself so I won't listen to a preacher castigate me over my "lifestyle."

When I read your post I felt like I was reading an excerpt from my life story.
I too have left Christianity simply because the bible, intellectually, makes no sense whatsoever. The biblical concept of God is not one of love and compassion. He is a tyrant, plain and simple. You praise a tyrant because you have to, not because you love him.

What abhors me is that we clasp tightly onto a religion that was used to keep us in bondage for centuries. It baffles me. I'll never be able to wrap my brain around the concept.
Hell, even if you believe in a different god(like Buddha)black people still believe you are destined for hell.

I think black Christians are infinitely worse than white christians, hands down. That has been my experience for the most part. White Christians are just obnoxious and annoying. The black ones are true fire and brimstone mean as hell.

Oh believe me. Just because I am gay does not mean I will let anyone emasculate me. My sexual preference is just that, my sexual preference. Anyone who has a problem with it can goto that mythical place called Hell.

(I was thinking about the Black church the other day. In the ghetto I mean. I used to live in the 'hood, and I still live close, and I see flyers for free food and free socks and toiletries and so forth...is it maybe different here, up north, where you don't get so many Southern Baptists? Or is being gay and being a churchgoer on the downlow in the south as in the north?)

As it is I am not on the "Downlow." I choose to live my life in complete truth and I make no apologies to anyone, including the church, for that. However, I am imagine the church would be far more accepting of black congregant on the "downlow" as opposed to an openly gay male. I remember when I came out one of my brothers asked me, "Why don't I just get a girlfriend and sleep with other men on the side." I was floored to say the least since these people are supposed to be "christians."

From what I've seen every Black Christian is cut from the same cloth. You can do everything, including kill somebody, and god will forgive you for it. But if you are gay then you're destined for hell, even if you are an upstanding citizen.
The hypocrisy is maddening. Which is why I have totally broken away from the black evangelical movement...And I no longer believe in Christianity. I refuse to praise a God who hates me for something that I had no control over.
Furthermore, I consider myself more moral than the majority of Christians out there.

Oh yeah, I definitely had the theological issues too!

I think my gay orientation was the big catalyst for my deconversion. Believe me, if I was straight, I know--more than likely--I would still be a Christian. Because it is just easier to go along to get along sometimes...

Anyway, I have always had a hard time believing it.

To me the Bible is nothing but a fanciful myth. The stories are so outrageous and over the top that I don't know how any sane person could believe them as "inerrant."

Conservative white males are very prone to being critical of black people, paricularly black males, and there is likewise a tendency for black females who participate in these IR blogs to be very critical of black males. Thus, white conservative males are more attracted to such blogs despite being less inclined toward serious IR realionships than liberal white males.

Im not too bothered by more things going to Setanta, since I feel they generally do a better job with the matches. My problem is that with Setanta on ITVN, i do get a slighlty worse picture (i know, better than nothing) but its still annoying. I watch the early match on setanta and come back over to FSC and its night and day. Not to mention the rebuffering etc. Im more upset that United plays the early saturday match every week until until late april, and those will most likely be changed for FA cup matches which will be PPV. things are better than last year, thats for sure, but its a pain not knowing each week where and when you can see your team play. I cant wait to be able to swith to directv and have the recording abilities and on screen guides.

i read the preview in the newsletter and i wanted to make a couple points. first, evra is not being reported as questionable. ive seen many people say it, and he was rested on tuesday for a calf..but there isnt a single news story i can find that says he is a doubt. rio and vidic have been mentioned, but both are expected to play. that means united should still have a full strength back 4 in front of Kusz so he should be protected. Ronaldo is obviously the biggest threat, and them stopping him is easier said than done. However, Rooney scored against Boro last weekend, and put in two goals against the European XI side on tuesday. Despite not being a true match, he has been finding the net and appears to be back on track...not slumping. Also Giggs will be probably upfront with rooney, with ronaldo and park flying around the outside. even with carrick and oshea (probably) in the midfield, that is a very fast and skilled attack...also remember united won the first matchup with bolton away 4-0...in which rooney scores a hattrick after being slated as being in a "slump" . i just dont think a draw is in the cards gaffer...but i could be wrong

ok thanks for the link. ive seen most stories not list evra as a possibility, one say hes doubtful, one say he is likely to return, and that one makes it sound like hes surely out. anyway, as for the goals.. like i said rooney has scored 3 goals in the past week, and has already done a number on bolton this season (when coming off a slump). not to mention giggs has been rested and is in great form lately (player of the month). having said that, i dont expect united to need more than 2 goals to win this matchup.

i want to clearify i wasnt questioning your research...i genuinely wanted to know. theres been chaos on united message boards regarding the injury list since some players are "questionable' then declared fit ya know. thanks again

i dont know gaffer...you were saying rooney was having a poor game but he came out very good in the second half. you were saying it didnt look like he could buy a goal...but i think that just reflected his many chances. his goal wasnt a moment of excellence..he was due that goal from all the work he was doing. i think its not a coincidence that you left the chat around the same time rooney really started playing well. i will give you he wasnt playing well the first half though.

Interesting you should point out Rangers Ballpark here in Texas. It was built with a retro feel because the team's history was miserable and only dated to the '70s. The team was begging for some appeal, and thought the vintage look for their park would do it.

dont really see much of a story here...seeing as though FSC generally has some of the worst matches to choose from anyway. each round the best matches (manchester united no matter who they play) are on PPV and until thats fixed, this isnt a big deal. you have a hard time paying $15 a month for a 24 hour channel....what about $15 for a 2 hour game?

setanta needs to figure it out and get their rights together, and then get on every cable outlet. they would get in more households as part of a sports teir and probably make more than $15 of true football fans.

living in an apartment and facing the wrong direction, ITVN allowed me to see matches i wouldnt have otherwise seen. for nearly 2 seasons ITVN was not the ideal solution but pretty darn close. however once setanta broadband became a better option, i made the switch. but ITVN slowly but surely did their part to lose trust with their customers. then they dropped certain sports like rugby. and with subpar quality (inevitable with the technology) blacked out sports, no dvr, buffering during matches...and yet the whole time we paid the same price dish customers did? even setanta broadband now is a rip off. if people are willing to pay these prices for a subpar setanta, why not just get it on cable and see how many more get it. no bar in my state opens at 7am for a prem match, let alone pay for another channel, so in home is the only option

i enjoyed his book youll win nothing with kids and i wondered if he had any thoughts on sky sports "state of the game" debate about the problems with grassroots football in england. his article on the 19th was very interesting about respecting the referees and the new changes being implemented. how does he think this will affect the pressure put on kids, the touchline dads who think they are fergie, the refs being threatened. he took a humorous look on this in his book, but what does he think about the current state of the game, and how has it had any affect on english football in general. surely it isnt the reason for the underperforming national team, but does he think some kids are quitting early or moving away from football at a young age? also, what changes does he think could/should be made if any. any dialogue on this subject would be interesting and very timely

ya know gaffer i was going to bring this up in my questions for jim white. theres a problem in grass roots football with the parents being too rowdy at their kids matches, yet old trafford and other places are turning into a 'homefield disadvantage'. now i think the reasons for away fans being louder than their home counterparts is obvious...but on a 1:1 basis. when they are outnumbered 20:1 and are still heard clearly...theres a problem. i know united fans in manchester are very passionate, but its not just a matter of them being priced out etc...ive heard friends talk about trying to start chants and songs and being told to sit down and weird looks. the quiet fan has the majority and only small pockets can really be heard. im not sure of a way to combat this.

keep up the good work. its one of 3-4 sites i check daily. ive seen epltalk go from a podcast, message board, chat with video, blog and everything in between. i have to say it currently fulfills my needs and i enjoy it. but the professionalism and personality of the gaffer makes it a pleasure. some bloggers rely on controversy to be exciting...but i am not one of those people who enjoys reading things to get upset.

i think the way things are now is probably the best. not too much but enough. sure some more podcasts would be great but only when they are actually worth while...not just for the sake of it.

first off i think rece davis has done very well if you consider he isnt a soccer guy...he has done research to find out the players we should know and their clubs etc.

to foudy. first off the question is why have her on. for me its very simple...ESPN knows there are a few different types of people out there who are already interested in soccer. laintos (who may opt for ESPN deportes anyway), expats and various other 'foreigners', and young girls. the young girls because they play soccer and think the guys are hot. so to have foudy up there they are getting that i think. not to mention shes played in international tournaments and is the only american analyst.

overall though she gets on my nerves because she always seems to be making jokes or talking over people...she just doesnt seem as professional or prepared. its hard to look that good though sitting next to andy gray. overall her opinions are fine though...i think if she took it more seriously she would do extremely well.

guys just dont want a woman who has won medals and trophies playing this sport telling them what to think.

as i always say...more of american soccer fan being the worst thing for this sport in this country

gaffer, i think i have an idea about what your article is about. and if i may add, i actually cancelled FSC for the summer...i tend to cancel certain channels like HBO or whatever during the summer months so im not spending my evenings in front of the TV. anyway when i thought about it, other than the nightly news shows ..what will we miss? the whole premise of your intro is interesting, but you dont explain how its true in the article. ive heard this mentioned before (on a certain world soccer show)...but never really understood. sure there are various guaranteed payments that come with winning that game, but when you say "when its all said and done" that implies its an eventual sum. well if united got 120k lifelong fans after winning the champions league, and they buy a home shirt for the next 10 years, that win will prove to be more valuable "when its all said and done". its a fine point to make that its an important game, but the giants superbowl win will do more for their franchise than hull city becoming the odds on relegation favorites.

but heres perhaps another novice question...how is that single win different than any other? just because its a playoff (one off)? for example, when the 17th and 18th teams in the prem play on the last day of the season, isnt that match worth the same value? surely we all know by now that a win in november counts the same as a win in may?

could you say that after that playoff match, one team stands to win 120m and the other does not? sure. but doesnt any team who avoids relegation get guaranteed that same amount? its the TV rights for being in the prem, plus a parachute correct? i guess i just dont like the concept of that match being such a high profile game...seems more something for bloggers and radio hosts to talk about, but everyone must understand its a novelty.

We mobilised, we collected, we protested, we campaigned, we lobbied, we vandalised, we wrote, we phoned, we emailed, we rallied, we marched, we flash-mobbed, we rioted. We made it impossible for them to visit Manchester peacefully. And the loss of our club to people who didn't give a toss about its identity and traditions meant so much that some of us walked away altogether. Home and awayers with decades of fanaticism to their names had decided that forming a new club, with the incredible effort that entailed, was the only alternative to seeing their club used as some egotistical bastard's plaything.

Contrast this with 1st September 2008. The only sound you could hear that day was that of 100,000 zips being simultaneously lowered as the blue quarter of Manchester collectively dropped its trousers and bent over, willing to be shamelessly violated by some slimy rich man's c**k. Not a shred of pride, not a moment's defence of their supposedly salt of the earth club; just a panting mass, all ready to be anybody's Bi*ch in exchange for money with which they can buy success.

There really is only one true football club in Manchester, and it's not Manchester City.

I know this is a bit of an older post, but I found this site through a different avenue just this evening. I tried out the section where you sing to it and it guesses your pitches and tries to match songs. I tried the opening line to the national anthem, and this is how it turned out (granted, I'm taking a risk by showing you my not-so-hot pitch, though I will say I was only half a pitch off on the starting note of the traditional A flat setting).

Nevertheless, I thought it was really neat and look forward to playing around with it sometime.

I find it odd that Google Video would 'explore' the CC 'feature'... After all, their strength is in text searching, and having captioning information would be quite invaluable to their business model, yes?

IMO, CC should have been in Google Video offerings since day one. Google should have provided the self-captioning tools for its users to provide CC content and make video searching all that much more easier.

I think it is within the scope here since the ultimate goal of high-end cd playback is to emulate vinyl (eluded to above). That said, I've heard an $8000 cd player A/B'd with a $350 turntable and the contrast is stark. The only cd playback system I've heard the approaches analog sound is the dCS stack (about $32,000 for the 3-box system).

So this looks cool, but something urks me about it... It's not that I think it's cruel to fish...(remember PETA kills 98% of the animals it "saves") plus they're fish....seriously...

My complaint is physics. These "tubes" are ABOVE the two tanks. In order for the water to not push out the tanks and spill on the floor, it would need to be kept under pressure. In fact, the only way to get the water up there is to literally suck it up from the two tanks simultaneously while filling both with water. Literally PULL the water up to the top and cork it (must be kept air tight otherwise the tanks overflow till there is no water in the tubes). Something this size doesn't look feasible.
