in PETA accused of slaughtering thousands of pets on The Daily Contributor
According to SourceWatch, a project of the Center for Media & Democracy,
Anyone who criticizes tobacco, alcohol, fatty foods or soda pop is likely to come under attack from the CCF [Center For Consumer Freedom.] Its enemies list has included such diverse groups and individuals as...the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; the American Medical Association; the Arthritis Foundation; the Consumer Federation of America; New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani; the Harvard School of Public Health; the Marin Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Other Drug Problems; the National Association of High School Principals; the National Safety Council . . . Ralph Nader's group, Public Citizen; and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A quick tour of the CCF website reveals article after article dismissing reputable scientific studies that demonstrate the dangers of high fat, trans fats, high sugar, processed food, meat-consumption diets, the dangers of high mercury levels in fish, etc., and attacking advocates of healthy lifestyles."
One of CCF's favorite targets is Peta and other animal rights groups who cut into the "junk food" profit margins of CCF's clients.
The disinformation put out by the CCF flies in the face of both science and common sense. But that should be no surprise, since the goal of CCF is not to promote consumer freedom, but to increase the profit-margins of their corporate clients.

in Animal Rights Radical in the Obama Administration on Dakota Voice
Responsible business leaders are coming to the conclusion that profit-margins are not the be-all and end-all. Many are changing-- if not their views on animals, the environment, and human rights around the world---- at least their policies and actions in those areas. After all, it's not in the interest of business to alienate customers who are becoming more and more concerned over the kind of cruel disregard for others that permeates industry focussed only on bottom-lines.
If Obama can appoint good people like Sunstein to offset the damage done by the Bush Administration's catering to industry and lobbyists, and push business --for whatever reason -- to change its abusive ways, then more power to him -- maybe there's hope for us all yet!

in Council taps Dryden to run city for now | AnnistonStar.com on The Anniston Star
It seems like the council is adding an unnecessary step to this process. Why not let Dryden remain interim city manager until a permanent replacement is hired? Isn't George Monk being paid to stay on as an advisor until a new permanent city manager is found? Surely he and Chief Dryden can handle things until then.

I don't know about 'counter-productive', but agree that a feedback loop would be nice to help senders manage their complaint rates. Stay tuned for an announcement about Yahoo! feedback loop availability.

in Why do we charge $250? on The Angelsoft Blog
Note that I'm a serious entrepreneur as I invest my very own money (you can't get more serious than this, obviously). And that's exactly the reason I will never throw 250 USD per month at you for being part of a questionable platform when I can actually attract even better VCs and AIs for free.
You make exactly the same fault like the DEMO guys. They've lost against TC50 as they selected companies based on silly charges (10k), not merits, ideas, ability.
Investors: In which company would you rather invest: In one that throws away its money for the search of more money (to throw it away as soon as they have it) or one that rather invests its money into product development? Pretty clear.

dear Mr Doe in the headlights
I know it is important to invest as much as you can in your business, and being attractive to investors, whether it be the friends and family round or Angel or even VC, is often crucial. Very few start-ups are fully funded by founders. We should all be so lucky to have the funds to bring out businesses into the black without finding outside money. As someone who is in the process and always looking for more money I have realized that a broader approach is going to increase my odds of finding the investors that are interested in what I am offering. The developers at Angelsoft and the people that invested in them have just as much right to make money as you and I in our businesses. Don't get down on the next guy for trying to make a buck. I know in marketing my product, I have to spend money to make money. The same is true with finding funding. Early investors get more for their money than the Angel will and that is what they stand to gain. In terms of what we have given away already to get where we are, this is a small investment even if it doesn't pay off.

Great Job Eagle Tribune!!! You print the quote from the thug regarding the police harassing him, way to reinforce his negative behavior. Why didn't you ask him why he was pulled out of line 2 times for yelling & swearing at the police and staff. I thought the police used great restraint by not arresting him and letting him finish his graduation. Also, asked him about the gun that he has on his myspace page. This thug has been involved in numerous incidents at and around the high school. I give him 2 weeks in the marines, they wont be as nice as the police.

We should be proud that after his negative behavior he has made it to his graduation. It is people like you with your negative comments and dumb attitude that keep many young men from reaching graduation. You should keep your comments to yourself

in Bartels Manzi-handled on Will Wilkinson
I'm just not sure that it makes sense to talk of Presidents as "shepherding the economy" in the first place, as if nothing else mattered (Federal Reserve chairman, Congress, foreign oil producers, unexpected economic developments like the Internet, and a million other things).
in Bartels Manzi-handled on Will Wilkinson
Moreover, although I'm not an economist, my hunch is that Carter's appointment of Paul Volcker to the Federal Reserve had more effect on the national economy during the 1979-1987 years than anything Reagan did. And Reagan's appointment of Alan Greenspan in 1987 had more effect on the national economy in the 1990s than anything Clinton specifically did.
So how does Bartels account for that? Should we attribute the Reagan years to Carter, and the Clinton years to Reagan? (If, that is, one is going to be so simplistic as to attribute given years to a President in the first place.)

OK, but I still think that there are far too few data points (what, 11 Presidents?) to come with anything meaningful one way or the other. It's the equivalent of Ptolemaic cycles -- sophisticated but irrelevant calculations.

Well, that should give you pause -- rather than just accepting it as a fact of nature and urging women to wait, think more deeply for a second here. For women, the prime childbearing years are the late teens. Childbearing ability goes down after that, and by age 35, childbearing is way more dangerous -- fertility is down, risk of Down's syndrome is up, etc. There's something deeply wrong about a system that makes women choose between 1) having children at the biologically appropriate time, vs. 2) a heavy financial penalty.

Bryan’s insistence that he’d rather risk the ruin of his daughter’s potential than have her go childless strikes me as perverse. I simply can’t make any sense of it.
Really? You might disagree with it, but you can't even figure it out? A moment's rumination on Darwin's theory of evolution might do the trick (i.e., people have an instinct to see their genes preserved).

in Selling Sex Is OK and Child Abuse Isn’t on Will Wilkinson
Well, the better way to restate Ross' argument would be this:
(1) It is permissible for parents to make their children use their bodies in many ways (to study, to mow the yard, to clean up the dishes, to clean their rooms, etc., etc.).
(2) Sex is morally indistinguishable from any other "use" of the human body.
(3) If (2) is true, then there would be nothing wrong with parents asking their children to engage in sexual activities. (This wouldn't have to involve the parents themselves; say the parents told one child to masturbate the other child -- doing the other child a "great kindness" in Will's words).
(4) If (3) seems repulsive, as it does to many people, then maybe you should rethink this whole argument that sex is morally indistinguishable from any other "use" of the human body.
(5) More than that, once you start thinking about how sex is different from almost all other routine uses of the human body (for example, its extreme impact on the emotions and hormones, its potent power to cement together relationships or to break them apart, etc.), then you might end up somewhere other than strict libertinism.
(I say "libertinism" because libertarianism would only mean, as a theory of government, that the government shouldn't regulate sex; libertarianism doesn't in any way require you to take the moral stance that all handjobs are always a sweet favor.)

in Our Duty Is to Do No Harm on Will Wilkinson
I’m trying to draw attention to the fact that the basic structure of the global system of border enforcement and legal exclusion from labor market participation badly disadvantages millions and possibly billions.
Billions? Come on. If billions of illiterate and impoverished people immigrated to America, they wouldn't all suddenly have a median income of $30,000. They'd just drag down America to their level. What's really keeping them down is not their inability to migrate to America, but the lack of good government, property rights, intellectual capital (i.e., the formation of businesses), and possibly cultural habits, in their own countries.
