Big tip-off. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that one Dave Winer writes code, among other things, and there could very well be some gems on his old hard drive. Could this be the same Dave Winer?

The guy removed the old drive and took it in the back room. It's pretty easy to imagine them immediately mounting it in a special machine to see if the drive was recoverable. And, walla, yes it is.

If the store manager wanted, I'm sure she had some discretion to return the old drive to you. But, that was no longer possible as the drive was promptly packed up and sent by courier to the home office for analysis while you were still in the store!!!

Interesting,

Re: Hope is what we have, Hillary (Scripting News)

I think about hope, and what it means, a lot. I started really thinking about it when I first heard of a little town called Hope, Arkansas, which I probably would never have heard of were it not for Bill Clinton. When he said he still believed in it, I thought he meant more than just the place, but that we all must have hope. And to not give up our hopes (and dreams).

Re: MamaLamaSamba

Wow! When I started my job about a year ago, my boss had just gone into business for herself. I never asked her, but I believe the computer I use came from her previous employment where they were sort of careful to remove the data files before letting it out the door. But, not the junk.

Anyway, I spent that first day updating Windows, installing Firefox, firewall, and anti-virus software (it had none), and cleaning out about 90 cases of spyware and 400 instances of various other forms of malware. There was one super evil search bar type thing attached to IE that took a couple weeks to finally get rid of. This thing made even the simple act of closing IE launch pop-up ads for porn sites.

The one so-called expert said that Julie was in fact computer literate because she had an AOL account, etc. Well, whoever had this particular computer before me was also computer literate. But still managed to get a tangled up mess on her computer.

Re: Sticks Stacks

That. is talent. They never stop selling.

What's scary is they put a charge through on a card with an expired date and relate it to the successor account.

Excellent analogy on the restaurant.

Several years ago I bought some clothes for my kids at a national chain in the mall. Three or so months later, my bank calls me wanting to know if I was making long distance calls to Germany. No. Well, it turns out that the clerk at the store pocketed my credit card information for future personal use. How they traced it back to that person, they never told me. But, thanks to some eagle-eye software at the bank, they caught it and the charges never even showed up on my account statement. I did appreciate the bank calling me for that.

So, here's a question. Who are these people that work for these companies that have our credit card and debit card info?

Re: Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

That. was awesome!

Re: Anonymity Isn’t the Problem

Very well said. I started blogging anonymously, but quickly stopped. I've even tried to dabble in it a couple times since then. Personally, I just wasn't comfortable with it for myself. However, I do not judge others that do. If they are consistent and interesting, I'll read them and respect them and stick with them - even when I might disagree with them or even detest their position on an issue. Once they start flaking out (for lack of a better word), I just stop reading them and never look back. Well, I guess I feel pretty much that way whether a blogger uses his name or not.

On a purely selfish note, I'm glad you started using your name. I followed a link to TechCrunch (I think) from Dave Winer one day. As I was reading the conversation I saw a familiar name. And I thought to myself, can it be that there is more than one person in the world with that name. So, I followed you over here and it didn't take long to figure out it was you. I've been here ever since. And the rest they say, is history.

Re: A Little Salsa With Your Sticks

Wow! And, oh, my God! One thing that occurred to me, and maybe someone somewhere already commented this, is that Janna gave up so easily because she already has another scam in development somewhere. The really creepy thing is Janna is sitting back somewhere reading all this. The question is, is she shamed, or is she getting off on it.

Re: Internet Fakery Taken Up a Notch or Two

Okay, I thought about it more. Maybe she gave up so easily to avoid an ugly confrontation and possibly the police being called. This is timeless practicality. To start, I would recommend a blazer. If you can afford two, get one each of corduroy (can be business and casual) and wool (business and semi-dressy). Black slacks and a black straight skirt. A couple nice finished t-shirts or plain shirt. Flats or low-heeled pumps. As for the colors, whatever looks good. This probably wasn't what you were looking for, but you'll look good and people think you know what you're doing (which you probably do, anyway).

I wear this stuff everyday. Except, not so much the skirt part anymore. I have two of these. It may not look like it came from Saks, but it's super comfortable, looks decent, and you can't go wrong with that price.

On the other hand... The last time I was in Atlanta, the shoeshine girl just off the lobby of the some downtown hotel (can't remember the name), wore a little black cocktail dress at eight in the morning. So, there's that.

Re: The Painted Box

Just beautiful. I have to believe, if the reverse had happened, we could be doing the same thing. Not me, but some.

The main thing, however, is that Barack is not the one to whom they should direct their ire. Rather, it should be to the process. Personally, I'm still reeling over that whole scene over the weekend. I realize what happened makes sense to a lot of people. But, not to me.

Anyway, it happened, and to give your vote to John McCain as some kind of punishment because Hillary didn't get the nomination just flies in the face of what we as Democrats stand for and hope for. Like someone else here said, a better tomorrow for all of us, among other things.

I hope this makes sense. Like I said, very emotional and still reeling.

P.S. Until this campaign season, we have never seen political signs on our public boulevards or park district parks until someone in Oberweis's campaign decided to put his signs there. Apparently, I'm not the only one who is disgusted by this, since most of the signs have been stomped down.

If anyone from the campaign is reading this, please come and get your signs ASAP (in the Bunn Park area). Thank you.

And thanks, Rich.

Re: Madigan responds to impeachment resolution

Rich, Just minutes ago Jack Cafferty mentioned this resoltuion on Wolf Blitzer's Situation Room. Something about the "Democratically controlled Illinois state legislature is considering...." No credit to the Capitol Fax, unfortunately.

Also, Cafferty is formulating his web question of the day around this topic: "5 p.m. ET: Is it a smart strategy for Democrats to call for the impeachment of President Bush?"

Anyway, without having read the above comments, it's like yelling out to the rest of the country, "hey, Illinois is a blue state." Which, like, no one knows.

Even if such a resolution passes in Illinois, it'll have no effect on the grand scheme of things. It reminds me of that phase where some municipalities were trying to pass resolutions condemning the war in Iraq.

Re: Question of the day

I-55

Re: Question of the day

The boundaries for the City of Springfield and Capital Township are the same. I went to the fair every day and every night. As a secretary on the Democratic staff, I had a little gig working the Dem tent a couple hours a day. It wasn't necessarily a young woman's dream job - handing out rulers, pencils, shopping bags, and bumper stickers, but it was fun. I sigh at the memory. My favorite thing, though, was the parking pass just inside Gate 11. Loved that parking pass. Miss that parking pass.

Personally? Many years later, taking my daughters to the fair, riding the Flying Bobs over and over, wasting more money on the ring toss and the frog hammer hop than I care to recall.

Larry Mullholland, I too was at that Beach Boys concert. Other memorable concerts included K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Willie Nelson (several times), Kenny Rogers.

Re: Question of the day

Anon 12:29: Wow! "Tort reform" is a protection racket for the medical industry. Economic and attorney fee caps are designed as welfare for rich people. The medical industry has successfully diverted attention away from their incompetent practitioners and onto the lawyers. Lawyers are not the problem in medical malpractice. Lawyers are their scapegoats.

Part of the reason it's so hard to bring a malpractice suit is because doctors clam up and look the other way when they see other doctors having committed malpractice. These doctors are liars for the sake of their own wallets and not the welfare of their patients.

People who have been injured at the hand of their trusted physician or medical staff don't stand a chance until doctors are forced to report the errors of other doctors. That is the reform we need.

Re: George Ryan sentencing – UPDATE: RYAN SPEAKS AT HEARING – GIVEN 78 MONTHS

So, will he lose his pension? Weird.

Maybe the politicians are shrewder than the advertising wonks would think. Or hope. The buzz (good or bad) generated in online media, i.e., newspapers and blogs and whatever, is just free advertising for the campaigns. And, that kind of free advertising is probably a hundred times better than dollars spent advertising on weather.com.

Re: Question of the day

Downtown, that is intriguing.
