See, I usually resonate on any conversation about taking a critical approach to consumerism, pretty much any time I hear such a conversation. But I am utterly bewildered that, almost uniformly, Christians who are critical of consumerism truly believe that awareness of the true nature of consumerism will change anything. Or, as your subject for this interview says, "resistance follows naturally enough." The only way I can conceive of someone really espousing this view is if they (1) don't believe most people have a good understanding of consumerism, and (2) believe that simply having a negative attitude about something leads naturally to resistant behavior against it.

It's weird, because minus # 1 and # 5, that's my "most fun things to punt" list.

I like your development of the idea. I was only asking if these systems theorists were using the metaphor, because then I might have more evidence for my theory that the government is stealing my ideas and selling them to publishing companies. Also, I invented the Internet.

Did one of those guys who write on systems theory use the concept of "double theft"? Because I remember coming up with the idea independently, so it's weird that someone else conceives of it that way.

I think the emergent movement IS a protest movement, I just think that a lot of the things they are protesting against are things they are reincarnating in a different form. For example, they may despise what happens on Sunday morning, but often that just means having something only slightly different happening on Saturday or Sunday night. A protest movement is a good thing, but without a positive vision that's significantly different, it's just a protest movement and nothing more.

in Mixing Religion and Politics on the Jesus Manifesto
It's a valid point, but what I find equally "degrading" is the idea that religion and politics ought to be separated. The Church ought to be a political entity, and as such, it needs to use its spiritual power to make heavenly changes in the political realm. It seems like the point William is trying to make is that being used by the worldly political system is not a substitute for this responsibility.

There are a lot of people doing options 1, 2, and 3. My mom has been practicing her faith in a public school for almost 30 years, there are a lot of teachers AND students doing that. Christians are sticking up for Samaritans all over the place in America, and I think there are lots of people trying to point out corruption and oppression. Do we just need to do it more? Or are you suggesting a qualitative change?
