Yodlee does a little more than mint (like accumulating all your bills, etc). I don't use Yodlee very much though because their interface suck.
I ran into another bug with mint this week. My bank sent me a new credit card this week. Now all my credit card transactions are duplicated on mint. Hiding the old card transactions mean that I have to recategorize all my transactions again. Mails to their support has come back with standard "tips to reset password" , "tips to hide accounts" :) They are probably getting more feedback than they can handle.

My suggestion to them was to allow hiding an account between a time period. So hide all transactions on my old card from May01 and hide all transactions on my new card before May01. That way I don't have duplicate transactions and I wouldn't have to re-categorize my old ones either.
Posting here in the hope that someone from mint will read this and get it done. I have started to get dependant on mint now. :)

2010 to me is a nightmare.
I'll have my data segregated in the iPhone world, Xbox world and facebook's world.
There will be 19 app stores that don't work with each other.
There will be a "connect", "single login" feature from every service out there that only they use.

Why can't MS have a more coherent presentation. Scoble's transcript is what gives a more sense of direction to the whole presentation.

troyh, thats a good one. I have always wondered why MS hypes its technologies. After all its not a startup trying to get some buzz.
I prefer the method followed by Google and Apple to an extent.

I wanted to know the cause for MSN's censorship. Aren't we speculating a lot of things. I'd like to see facts before...
The reason I asked for the content, was to better understand the reason for MSN's censorship.

Allowing his blogs to read in the US would still be a violation of the law (if it isn't they'll make it into one).
Did MSN deny the censorship?
Does their contract specify that they won't censor?

Or is everyone just rushing to support coz thats how its done?

As a consumer I am frustrated that these techs are not available for use now.
But as an engineer, I love to see the technologies of tomorrow. I admire MS for trying a few things.

But I hate it when all that is mixed with market speak, thats all. After all the person within me who understands it is an engineer not a consumer. (MS should sell in a different way the future)

It uses magnetic sensors to get its direction and gyroscopes to get its inclination? If so, its really kewl.

When I started reading (here) I thought it mapped the nightsky image to a 'possible' nightsky from a database.

Anyone care to point me to sites with similar tech (I read something similar in robotics once, can't find it now) or more on this???

Mujibar : I wasn't trying to get Apple into the picture. That blog answers your questions. Replace Apple with Microsoft into the article.

Companies can partner with Microsoft for a lot of reasons but to be complacent and think MS (or any other partnet) will mother them would be a stupid decision.

People read MS restricted mp3s on Verizon phone - think its the truth.
People read Macintels are not doubly fast - think the processors are fast, no one said computers are fast.
People read Google's keynote was boring - think they have stuff up their sleeve (or maybe not :) which is why this is such a good publicity for them)

A device that will change the lifestyle of people in Africa or Asia has to be invented by the people there itself.
Not by people who live somewhere far away who probably has no clue as to what goes on anywhere else.

Am not saying these efforts will go waste. But if such a gadget is developed, then it should be flexible enough to be tweaked by the users for their own needs. And I don't see Microsoft marketing such a device.

There is no difference between a cellphone and a computer. There were computers that were slower than todays cellphones and were put to great use.

So instead of trying to come up with solutions. Try and identify the problems first. What are the problems they usually face? What can poor people do with computers?
Anyone?

Its no use having the next 'stuff' in right now. Coz a year later the next macbook would come out and everyone would buy one.
I remember when my dad bought our first TV. We had to be sure we got the next gen coz it was going to last for a few years.

If you have a floppy disk and you don't have a floppy drive, feeling cool and nex-gen doesn't help.

How do they assume users are incapable of doing anything complicated?

My answer would be :

Front row, the front row remote.

iPod not having an equaliser, not having on the go song deletion (I am not sure whether they've added this)

Macs not having a right mouse button (uptil this year)

customizable desktop on OSX (Windows allows you to movie things around, customize clicks, etc more).
Multiple ways to do something, e.g close an active window.

Apple never releases anything half-baked - but that also means they are not aggressive in advancing technology - what changes has happened to the iPod in the past 5 years ?

I know many people who bought an iPod not knowing it doesn't come with a charger :)
But they wouldn't dare say that out loud coz they would be frowned upon.

I'd take a bit more transparency in this case. If your product is mostly sold online and in your own stores, you have the freedom to reduce to data on the box.

But I would rather have more data on something I buy from Frys or Bestbuy - and on something I have no idea about (like a GPS device, for e.g)

If frontrow is meant to be simple it is not supposed to be compared to media center.

the stupid disclaimer any mac user has to put up forward : I also own a powerbook, I like it for what it is - and hate it for some of what it is.

And to the person who said that Apple is at the forefront of innovations (of course they are doing stuff in areas where they have to fight - thats why the company is still alive).
What have they done to the iPod in the past 3 years that was so innovative?
Now think if Apple were in MS's position, what kind of innovation would they be doing?

I have always wondered why A9 had prolems accurately mapping street addresses with their photos.
Live's preview is almost flawless in this aspect. The match between the lower screen and the top is good in most places.

Suggestions for improvement:

If you would restrict the car to not move (too much) away from the roads, it would be nicer :) I forsee the difficulties of that, but if your Navteq mapdata is perfect, you wouldn't have to worry too much.

Allow people to start maching addresses ?

Allow people to report mistakes easily, by pointing out on the screen, etc. :)

There are techies who dis anyone who isn't a techie (defined as who make the tech). Not me and a lot of other people, I believe.

No matter what you do or what he does, will persuade me to change anything (I believe)

What could happen is - if I believe that MS listens to me (thru you), I might take an active interest and check out its products (which I wouldn't have otherwise).
I am not sure if you can make MS change, but if you can make it listen to us, that will be more than enough.

One thing that pisses me off is - you try to sugar techies like you would others. I love techies because they are cute, because they are devoted, blah, blah.... I don't know if it works on some of us, but it irritates me.
Please don't try to be one of the techies, be what you are, stick around, help us, show us stuff, etc. :)

I almost never watch the C9 interviews because of its length.
Can't you get a DVD menu kind of thing inside your video (since you are using wmv anyway), so that people can see what's contained in the video and jump to the section they want. ?

Or also clips or highlights ?

The problem is not with the hype Robert, the problem is with the product. Even without the hype the product is still meh....

Now what is the product? Nothing... there is no spec...

Will it have a USB port.... it depends...
Will it have a camera...... it depends...

And what did MS do for the whole thing with its software prowess ? Port tablet PC edition? Where is the innovation?

I didn't hear about a single innovation from anyone yet - not MS, not intel and not even the manufacturers....

What should we be excited about?

I agree 1st gen products will have its flaws. But look at the 1st gen iPod... not a great product, but there were things that it changed.

Origami is not a product, Origami felt more like an idea. More like the space elevators I keep reading about :)

And please the name dampens the spirit too. Ultra Portable edition PC or what? Names like Ultra seem so cheesy these days... and boring....

Jay my view on that : A trendy name can't do what a trendy product can't.

Do you think of quality when you hear Apple, iTunes, iPod?
What about Google, the word wouldn't have made sense to anyone until the company came along. Now it has a 'meaning'.

So if Windows Media Player was the greatest software ever (meaning if it would do what I wanted, the way I wanted) - WMP would symoblise greatness to me.

Take Hotmail for e.g, that was a catchy name. But does anyone associate it with great service/software or great anything?

Blog about the ones you like the MOST, not because someone gave it to you or because you like the person (even though that should be a factor for a service product).

Then people will 'suck up' to you by making/showing you better products not by giving you more goodies.

The people with bad products will get pissed off.

That way you get to filter out the the baddies, and you hang around with the right people, and your popularity will increase (more) - isn't that what you wanted ? and your opinions will be valued (more)...

My speculation:

Adding the name "Windows" to a product makes it feel like its integrated with Windows (OS). That way the anti-trust cases can be thwarted.
And MS can also argue that Windows exists only as a package of the OS, Live and other apps, thus they can't split them up.

I can't see any other reason, other than the management not feeling confident about a new product that they have to use the "Microsoft" or "Windows" leverage to make it popular.

They (amazon) could have 'experts' in an area who blog about various products like : mp3 players or softwares or marketing books instead of one author writing about his own book.

They could hold competitions of sorts which would give points which would cash off (pennies maybe) when you buy something from amazon.

I've had a very good experience from amazon customer service. I could given a forum to express my thanks.

Blogs can't do anything if the product is not good enough.

If SUVs are sooo bad like so many people are making it out to be. Why are people buying it? (Just like so many people are wondering why Windows is so successful - there is no lock-in for an automobile).
So why are people buying it? Now that is something blogs can discuss and get feedback from its readers.

And Robert it is not easy to get a best selling car to market in 2 years :) Its not that GM doesn't have cars in the market...

I have subscribed to FastLane but I don't enjoy the conversations there. I don't feel its a conversation (two-way). Maybe this will answer the chap who wonders why GM sales aren't skyrocketing because of a blog.
Also the turnaround time in the auto industry is larger than in the software industry.

The firefox icon doesn't scale well. The very small versions don't convey the right message.
But its been staring back at me from my browser for a few years now. I'm used to it.
Don't change it unless you have more to 'say' other than just "feed" or "subscribe" or "rss" ,etc

Atleast orange seems to be the standard for most feeds, alerts, subscriptions, etc :)

I'm using XP/Firefox 1.5.02 and the line doesn't show up for directions in Live.
I always thought Live was not meant to be used for directions :D Now I see there are lines when I use IE6

Has the Streets&Trips team transferred to the Live Maps team? S&T doesn't seem to be an active team (based on features that are available on competing products not on the features they added to the last version). They better get working before Origami hits big time. Otherwise the other map services (TomTom Navigator or Oncourse Navigator or iGuidance) are going to steal the show.

One thing MSN could do is get their users to 'trust' their paid advertisers (they won't be lead to a scam site).

I hate it when those iPod pyramid schemes are advertised on Yahoo mail pages. I mistrusted those guys, and in turn mistrust Yahoo (as in they don't care about me). Then I started seeing such links in Google's ads too.

MSN could try and have 'reputed' companies advertise their website. Of course these guys might pay lesser but MSN will have the trust of its users.

I have been using siteadvisor.com for google and msn searches. Though not very accurate, its a tool which makes me "feel" comfortable.

Alijah & Brook : We are talking about people who can't change the default search engine, people who might not realise that MSN search and google search are different.

Don't you think it would confuse such people if you give them more choices? Then MS would have to 'explain' what different search engines are. Then they would have to explain their advantages. Would you do that in your product?

Now I am sure there is a reason why MSN search was renamed to Windows Live :) So 'dumb' (used in a very light sense :) ) people would just think of it as a Windows extension. Sometimes people like to use a 'package'. It makes them feel they are using the right product tailored for their other components. Remember we are talking about people who don't have time to check out different choices.
I also think Windows Live or Office Live will sound better in future monopoly suits (if any).

This discussion is unneccesarily getting complicated. What choices are you guys suggesting?

Giving people choices is not good. Windows is already thought of as having too many dialogue boxes. I've always heard that OSX needs very few tweakings out of the box. Thats what MS should also try to do.

I suggest having a 'right click' change search engine option. Now thats fair in my opinion. Easy to find... Any other opinions?

Something I read on Dell's forums yesterday: "My Dell mp3 player doesn't work with Xbox360, I called Dell Cust Service, they don't even know what a 360 is. And I don't think Microsoft would be interested in on of the millions of devices out there."

My experience with my iRiver H10 was similar. It would not copy playlists from my computer to the player. Nor would it transfer ratings from the player to the computer. I call up iRiver and they say the software (WMP10) is Microsoft's responsibility. And who in Microsoft is going to take up on this? I tried, no one did. I sold my H10.

There is no ecosystem. Or there is in which there are a lot of parasites and predators. Trick is to be one of them. Not an easy life as it is advertised, exciting none the less :)

I remember Michael not wanting a discussion at Techcrunch about the redesign, then someone commented that he liked the old Mike who used to listen to his readers. I guess that created the problem. His reader base got too huge and not neccessarily readers who gave suggestions for his benefit.

I always wondered whether MS could be muscled to increasing your pay :) with your subtle hints about how you are paid less at MS to the number of job offers you are getting and lastly the BMW post ;)

I admire MS for taking a risk in letting you go as much as I admire you for making this move. You are really worth than 85k/year. So money was the only reason? If not I would be interested in hearing what was lacking in your MS job.

A Week Later would be nice until it becomes popular. Then someone would have to come up with a week laterer. So if you have a 2nd phase to that, its a great program and something I would probably start on.

Pros: 1. It would get you instant popularity (I think)
2. There is an opportunity for speculation (from you, an expert and the audience)
3. It can be a source of information (if you have intelligent analyses instead of plain reporting)

A week later video provider B shutdown because they didn't follow Youtube's model of...

It doesn't have to be all negative and only about products/services. You could show Scoble a year later, too. How people changed in a year, for good or worse.

You could have prizes/polls for - what happens to Google Checkout "@ w33k l8r".
Have audience send in a short - I will shave off my hair if MS doesn't announced MS checkout in a week.

Hell? Mine is that I'm finding it tough to get a job now that I'm out of school. But, hey its something I can do something about.

There are two kinds of problems, the kind that you can do something about or the kind that you can do nothing about.

In some cases the problems can't be classified as one or the other.
Like my no job situation, if I don't have one within a year, I can still find one. But that it might be a scar on my resume, I can't do much.

Or if my dog died. I couldn't do anything to get it back. But I could move on (maybe in a long time).

I know a rational answer is probably a cruel one to give to someone at a time of grief. But it has alway given me a little bit of peace, hope it does help someone.

Depends on what you would call as design.

If you think about design for usability, design for manufacture, etc - US does not suck

for pure aesthetics - US really sucks

Almost all the technology that is/was showcased in that concept is available on cars of today.
For e.g the drive by wire for throttle, transmission and brakes.

I've not seen its drive technology from the motors on the 4 wheels anywhere else. I believe the same motors can be used to charge the batteries during braking, downhill, etc.

I didn't read thru all the comments but I am sure someone might have mentioned this.

Consider the scenario in which you have set up such a meter and you have a vcast with a red rating or a 10/10 rating - I say the video shouldn't be up there. I wouldn't be interested and I believe no one would be except the fans.

And you can't get 'fans' of a particular person(like Paris hilton :) )/group (Apple) on a general site like podtech's.
For that you should set up a fan site in which case the meter becomes redundant.

If your blog/vlog is popular people are going to talk about it and make their own opinions. They will have just one more thing to talk about. If thats what you want....

I would advise you to check other softwares, too. Streets and Trips is very basic. For e.g it doesn't announce the street names, which means you would have to glance at the screen for each turn.

If cellphones are going to take away the iPod marketshare, it could be due to the iPhone :)

Apple has been quiet for awhile on the iPod front. When was the last update? The last special event introduced the boombox.
If Apple's sale is down, it isn't because the competition has done anything. Its apple's own doing.

I'd rather guess immediately after I see a product launch than take one before one.

Patrick was lucky that his powersupply broke.

The geniuses said that my powerbook would take 10 days for it to be repaired and sent back (that time it took 20 days because they didn't have the part in stock). I believe 10 days is what it takes normally.

Dell repairs and sends the laptop back within 2 to 3 working days. No one can beat that.
For a replacement part like powersupply, they ship it priority (before 10AM next day). So if you call in today, you should have the powersupply the next day morning. Oh, and if you don't like staying on the phone, use their chat service, its faster and you can have a transcript of the conversation.
I've used an inspiron for 4 years now, and they've only made one error with the shipping once, which they rectified and gave me a coupon for the trouble.

For the inspiron, I had replaced the powersupply, cd-drive and ram slots for my Dell over the last 3 years. Recently I called due to some dead pixels on the screen. They sent me a refurbished (new - because I saw it was built that month) laptop within a week - of course the laptop was a new model, had double the ram, a better screen, a faster dvd-drive and the latest processor (times had changed :) )

In my experience... I've had better times with Dell support than Apple's.
Not to mention, I've never liked the attitudes of those geniuses at the Apple bar.
Thats just me :)

Community stuff has to start small.
I used to have accounts on a lot of networking sites. Orkut has been the most productive for me because I was invited by a friend who took the time too introduce me to groups over there and find old friends.

Any community site that has a free and open registration and isn't referral based is bound to be misused.
Take Gmail for e.g if there is a gmail account which consistently sends spam, it can be traced back to the parent referal which can further be checked to see if the same person has started multiple spam accounts.

Buy.com started something for 'products' but then no one 'stays' on buy.com's site for long. Which is why I think Amazon is the company to look for. They are trying to get people to stay on their site even after shopping around. They have a good community of reviewers. They just have to just get their UI a little less cluttered (IMO).

If Fripp's sound is good enough, people will leave their speakers on and MS can have their 'branding thing', too.
Mr. Ball, if you are keen on the branding aspect, get the sound right, not trying to force a bad sound. Most people here are annoyed here because of the XP sound.

Maybe the XP sound was not so bad. But people might associate it with the time when they had to restart after some stupid software got installed or mcafee updated itself or after the blue screen of death.
Maybe its not just about the quality of the sound/music alone after all.

If I buy the blender and it is the best thing that has happened to me. Then this strategy might work.

My point being that Seagate might not succeed with this kind of marketing. 'Coz I wouldn't realise the difference between my new seagate drive and the other drives I have lying around, even if I buy one.

Would I notice higher transfer speeds? Are they bundling any out of this world softwares that could hook people to seagate drives? Do their drives look ultra cool that people around me will want one?
If not - the short attention they might get will be wasted.

I have a Dell and 2 apple laptops (a powerbook and a macbook). Dell has been really good at getting me stuff shipped next day. When I've had to send it in, I usually get it within 3 business days.
My powerbook went back for 15 days because of a faulty touchpad after the first month. The next time was better - 7 days (it took 4 days for the "geniuses" to ship it from the store(Bay Street))

And Dell gave me a new (refurb but its history showed that it was built the same week) - after I had to send my old one 5 times in the 2 years. Apple would never do anything like that. Considering that the keyboard has stopped working this week. By now Dell would have made me happier.

I understand that different people have different experiences. I love Apple products and feel good to own one, but that feeling goes off when they go bad.

By the way all my recent iPod purchases have been from Costco.

If points can be 'achieved' by something trivial as 10 searches on Live which any dufus could do. Then it wouldn't be an achievement anymore, would it?

Competitions are only fun when you win sometimes (or atleast you have a hope to win). With something like points. Only the top few would be can be kept interested.

This is why I like Apple (sometimes). They didn't just slap a round virtual keyboard thingy and call it revolutionary ;)
iPhone runs OSX but the GUI is entirely different?

I am not going to buy it anytime soon though. Cingular (+ data plans)+ 8gb + battery life (unless it has two batteries in it) stops me from spending $600 now. Hell I didn't even buy the PS3 :)

How long before MS releases the latest iteration of Origami? Anyone know if they are working on a better GUI for UMPCs?

I love it how Apple is marketing this as a phone. Microsoft made the mistake of marketing theirs as a UMPC. They had to define a market first with that tactic.

Origami : Why have a $600 keyboardless PC when you can get a laptop for the same price.
iPhone : Ooh, it also runs OSX. Any app can work on it.

The beauty of this is that everyone needs a phone. The only hurdle is a price (which is justified by the features). Not everyone needs a UMPC. I love Apple's marketing.

I made my girlfriend buy a powerbook last year. It has been with the geniuses longer than it has been with her. This time its almost 2 weeks. The customer rep takes a look at the record and says "Oh! its only 9 days. You are still in the queue.".
Till Apple gets its stuff back together. I am not getting another Apple product.

Apple has to keep parts in stock and the geniuses have to be more intelligent.

And Pete, Macs are way costlier than other laptops.
An HP laptop that a friend of mine bought from costco for $945: Core2Duo(i forgot the specs), 2GB RAM, 256mb Nvidia GEforce (128mb shared), 120GB Harddrive, 8CellBattery, Webcam inbuilt, etc. This was bought 3 weeks ago.
I don't care about the higher prices coz the macs look good and OSX I like - but the service sucks big time.

Not true loganson. The HP I wrote about is almost equal in specs to the $2499 15" macbook pro except for stuff like backlit keyboard, etc (and of course the looks :) )
The HP was for $949 from costco. Even if you add a $50 costco membership to it its cheaper.

Nowadays the Windows laptops come with inbuilt webcams and smaller remote controls with 4 to 6 buttons. Their implementation come no where close to Apples.

But I could buy two of those laptops for an Apple's price. That way I'll have a backup laptop each time it goes for repair.

If I buy a product today its the condition of the company NOW that matters and maybe the immediate future.
As of today - I am not too fond of Apple and am more satisfied with Dell. Reason being that the powerbook has been back 3 times for the same reason. Dell gave me a replacement by the third time.

I want Apple to do something about me because I paid a premium for it. I expect Dell service to be bad - because they have a bad reputation and also because I paid less for it.

When the Apple CSR says on the 9th day that its only been just over a week and there are a lot of people in the queue ahead of you - there has to be something wrong - RIGHT NOW.

Gmail and search have stuck to the wall - now they'll try to pick stuff off the floor and pin it those things that did get stuck (which is what Microsoft has been doing now).
They don't want to throw stuff at the things that are stuck, they try to throw stuff at empty places on the wall at the same time stick stuff to the things already on the wall.

I sometimes type an address in a search engine to go to a website. For e.g. "yahoomail".
The difference in layout and lesser ads distracting me makes me go back to google.

The only problem with personalization I've seen is when I decide to search for something different (which is when I would need "help" the most).

I am an engineer and I do regular searches on scientific books, terms, etc. One day I decide to check out something new because I met this really interesting chick who studies poly sci. I would have a tough time finding the right links.

With regard to the RIAA/MPAA, its the government which should do something if they are displaying monopolistic behaviour. If we feel against it, we should revolt against the government (or the legal body).

I am afraid "suckstobems" is right. Microsoft has the ideas. But its Apple and others who get the engineering right. I think its partly because the others start out with their ideas on a smaller scale.
The demo on on10.net showed the remote desktop to be slow and they said that it will be slower on the web interface. Its small things like these which will put off an every day user.

Phillip Miller, You probably shouldn't be using a smartphone if someone has to explain things to you :)
(assuming the user of a smartphone is supposed to be smart and not the phone).

If this catches on Microsoft will be in the same soup IBM were when Microsoft decided to have a more open OS.
MS will probably adopt Android, put up a cute interface and name it after some animal.

What is it about human nature that we cultivate trolls? Obviously Scoble is in it for the traffic. If we hate this post so much, why do we give him so many comments? :)
I guess its the advertisers who should be more intelligent. That's my only hope now.

Since you seem to be a big fan of cameras on cellphones, why aren't you a fan of the Sony Ericcson Cybershot series? A year ago they had the best cameras on cellphones (and their photo editing on the phone was cool to). I have lost touch with their lineup since then :)

And the $9.99 apps from appstore ? :) This is going to be one heavy investment. Which is why I've decided to hold on to my old iphone for now. I think I can live without the 3G and GPS.
I guess the revenue separation happened because Apple wouldn't share its revenues from the app store with ATT. ATT doesn't seem to have any bargaining power at all in this relationship.

Joe - with companies like Google, Yahoo, Apple bent on promoting any anti-MS technology - you won't see mass adoption anywhere soon.
But the more you open up flash the more the void for a closed system opens up.

The other day I was reading a post about Yahoo's problems. The writer was ridiculing Yahoo's lack of seriousness (from job titles, strategies, etc).

I guess everything is fine when the company is doing well.
