Mostly as a hobby publisher of blogs. But my definition of hobby may be someone else's definition of commercial. So I've been searching only for CC that allows commercial use recently.

If I were licensing my stuff via CC and wanted to make the distinction you are suggesting between hobby sites and (let's say) companies earning over $x a year, I would use the noncommercial license and then provide a link back to a page on my personal site that set out additional qualifications for free commercial use. Perhaps a registration form indicating how it will be used and where, an example of proper attribution, and contact info. Set the barrier as low or as high as you want it.

Just because you're using CC doesn't mean you still don't control the other aspects of your copyright.

Re: Mahalo Vlog Idol: a success or failure? | Andy DeSoto

While I agree that the early rounds and parts of Bachelon were often cringe worthy, so too are the really poor auditions from American Idol (and similar shows). That cringe factor is the main reason many tune in to the audition shows.

I felt the competition really started to find its legs during the Man on the Street portion where it immediately became clear that Leah D'emelio was the front runner. Sarah's point about the process building in a fan group for Leah is on point, but I have to wonder how many fans of the other final 6 will now tune out Mahalo Daily and follow those hosts to their own Vlogs. Fans of Clay Aiken don't go out and buy Ruben Studdard CDs.

If we did learn one thing from Mahalo Idol, it's that Lon Harris is an amazing talent. I hope we continue to see more from Lon as the Mahalo Daily continues.

Re: Happy Blogiversary, Jeremy Wright

Just so there is no confusion, The Disney Blog, which you have linked to up in your post, is not an official blog for the Walt Disney Company. They do use blogs and wikis internally and use heavy PR to influences blogs and websites (like mine) to pimp their products (but hey, I wouldn't be blogging about Disney if I didn't already like the product).

Thanks for the link, hope this clears things up.

-John
The Disney Blog -- http://thedisneyblog.typepad.com

Re: The Start Conference, Helping Entrepreneurs Start Companies

Any chance they'll be streaming this so those of us not on the west coast can learn the secret handshake?

Re: Aside | Blogger Appreciation Day | Blue Archipelago

Hello. I'm very happy you listed The Disney Blog up there in your "blogger appreciation day". It was a ray of sunshine on an otherwise bleak Monday.

Ps... Keep an eye open for Amanda's next LOST update after the show returns on April 24th (I can't believe they've made us wait that long, but I know it will be worth it).

John from TheDisneyBlog.com's last blog post..Disney Cruise Lines to open London Office

Re: Hair Cut in the Magic Kingdom

$17 adult, $14 kids (comes with sparkles and mickey mouse icons, if desired). However, I think you did the wrong thing by confronting the party on your own and not involving Disney Security. One of you could have kept an eye on the party in question while the other dashed to a store to insist they call security. If you had done so, you may not have felt better, but you probably would have prevented this same party from repeating their action on future visits.

-John

Re: At The End Of The Day

David, I enjoyed your education presentation and really look forward to mining your delicious links. I've found their staff nothing but helpful and the ration of complaint and downtime not out of the unusual.

There is one thing that will cause me to switch to another provider when my contract is over. While the server space is generous the processor allotment is not. If you get digg'd or /.'d you'll quickly go over their alloted processor amount. This will result in a warning and if it's not corrected (essentially you have to take your website down) they'll terminate your service. That can be a problem if you're trying to run a business, not just a hobby site.

Re: Joi is right

Just curious how the bilingual aspects of the conference were handled?

Re: Google’s new Reader Features

I have a work around for at least part of this. Using Google's 'Shared Stuff' (see http://t-l.cc/44s ) share the item your interested in and leave a short comment about the page or post. Then subscribe to the RSS Feed for your shared stuff (mine here - http://t-l.cc/44t ) in Google Reader. You can then publish the item in your Google Reader Shared Links page (mine here - http://t-l.cc/44u ). I just did that with a link to Disney's VMK MMORG to prove it worked. The only problem I encountered is the delay in Google to check the RSS feed for your 'Shared Stuff' RSS.

Re: Google’s new Reader Features

Salubri,

I think the answer is that Google tracks so many feeds it has to prioritize them based on popularity (and probably some other factors). So if the feed you're looking for is one you've custom added (a google alert, let's say), don't look for that to update in real time. That's why the 'refresh' button really does nothing most of the time.

Re: GreenPan: PFOA and PTFE-free Non-stick Cookware

You can view product details from HSN here

http://www.hsn.com/cnt/prod/default.aspx?pfid=260475

There's also a video of the demonstration.

The product looks great and is reasonably priced. That's before property taxes and insurance, so let's add another 20% to that. That makes it $2216 a month. That's approximately the monthly take home pay of someone making 35,000 a year. If home and utility payments should be roughly 1/3rd of one's income, then in order to afford this home the family would need to earn $105,000 a year after taxes.

To me affordable means a family who earns twice the poverty rate for the region should be able to afford it. Therefore, this home is not affordable. The only way it would be affordable is if the solar panels generated enough energy to give the homeowner more than $1200 in energy income a month... I don't see that happening with today's technology.

-----author replies------

John, I just wondered if you meant $1,200 payback above and beyond low or no energy bills?
