Some of the arguments raised in that discussion can be applied to this post as well.

I should add that I'm not trying to place myself above the crowd in this discussion. I have a good old case of Catholic guilt about some of the cheerleading I've done in the past and the self-imposed "obligations" I have felt to offer support for announcements.

Re: Tasting Etude Wines at Carneros, Napa Valley

Of course! It's not an either / or proposition. It can be done simultaneously.

Re: Why Do Radio Stations Play The Same Songs?

Pay for play exists more in the US than Canada. Which then affects Canadian charts because Canadian music directors mimic exactly what happens in the US.

Payola really existed heavily in the early years of radio when DJ's had control over music on their shows. It now happens on a station basis where large commercial buys or concert appearances or trips are bundled and given to stations that add the records.

It's similar to what happens in politics.. the ridings that elect someone to government are more likely to win government contracts for their community than the constituency that has an opposition member.

It's not right, and people fight against it, but it does exist.

I do find your final sentence an interesting argument: "The Stations do not play it because people like it, people like it because the stations play it."

How do you fix the system? Because there ARE radio stations that play variety and dont get the benefit of big label dollars, yet they languish near the bottom of the ratings..

Re: Why Do Radio Stations Play The Same Songs?

Read the comments from Phil and myself again. I did enjoy the songs when they were still new, but they burned on me VERY fast.

The type of music I ended up listening to in my off time was top 40 -ish. More euro based, but the same sort of sound. In other words, the stuff I wasn't playing to death.

However, as many a PD would tell me when I made a beef about the music, when I was sick of it, the audience was just starting to get it.

Re: Why Do Radio Stations Play The Same Songs?

Radio spins the familiar hits because most listening is not done for long periods of time. People tune in for 10 mins in the car to the grocery store, for 15 on the way to the movie, for 20 on the way home from work.

Most contemporary music radio stations (CFOX, The Beat) are designed to be consumed like snacks, not meals. Consumed in small portions you're more likely to hear something that's familiar and you like, that's a good thing. Consume these stations for a long period of time as the only staple of your diet and you'll get sick of the songs, that's a bad thing.

I'm trying to find a better way of saying "you're using them wrong," but I can't. The radio stations are designed for light consumption (which is the way the majority of the population uses radio).

Re: NHL Face Off 2009

That's of the original bowl at the HHOF. This will be many tourist's point of entry to the city. That's what I mean by tourist line. There will be a far greater "rookie" quotient on this transit line than any other, and I would have hoped the UX for the machines would have taken that into account, somewhat.

As it stands I tried to board a bus at Grouse last week armed with a $5 bill and no coins. The buses don't take bills. "You should know that," was the reponse I received from the surly driver.

I haven't ridden a bus in almost a decade. I take the SkyTrain or SeaBus and they both have paper currency facilities. We did have some there, but they were family or out of towners. Locals were asked to not bring them, and all the parents heartily agreed - they liked having some grown up time.

The best way to tackle the subject is to talk with each couple individually to gauge response. Had we had local kids at our wedding, we would have had upwards of 20 under the age of 5 vs 50 adults. A medium, and format that has taken it's community for granted for too long.

I'm also a blogger, vlogger, twitterer and trying to build out my own personal brand.

Thanks for reminding me about the importance of the little things, Gary.

See ya in Seattle on the 28th.

Re: Gary Vaynerchuk - My Web 2.0 Keynote in NYC

We could target ads to people in Vancouver. We further targeted people who had "engaged" or "in a relationship" as their status. We further sorted it to hit the target female demo of the station. Cost us < $50.

Even WE couldnt replicate that sort of niche on the radio.

Re: Appreciating A Seth Godin Post

Guy Kawasaki interviewed Darren Rowse about Seth and his closed comment policy. Rowse came to an interesting conclusion - with closed comments it causes the discussion to be taken elsewhere, furthering the "sneeze".

Interesting concept.

I explored how it pertains to radio, here:
http://www.buzzbishop.com/blog/2008/05/21/radio...

Re: Cuil Misses Me

Missed me too. The challenge is to still be true to yourself.

Some, however, just dont have their own personality and are quite fine being defined by their children.

I was almost assimilated into the Cult of Mom at a recent library storytime.
http://www.buzzbishop.com/blog/2008/07/24/the-c...

Re: My BlogHer/Feminism Rant

I think you also need to look at it from the pov of the marketers.

Women at a blogging convention. Odds are more than likely, that a majority of them will have / want children. Yes, there will be some non breeders there, there will also most likely be some gay bloggers there as well... but. .. when trying to deal in majorities and probabilities, you have to generalize, pigeon-hole and stereotype.

it's not wrong, it's not right, it's just how it is.

Re: ALERT To Traditional Media

LOVE this line: I want a content experience, not an ad.

The way Starbucks is using Twitter vs the way The Vancouver Sun is using Twitter is a PRIME EXAMPLE.

Look them up:

http://www.twitter.com/mystarbucksidea
http://www.twitter.com/vancouversun

One is engaging, one is broadcasting old news.
