in Twitter blacklists Mad Men characters (some of them) on VentureBeat
Has anyone found other "in character" Twitter account? The only one I've found is for NBC: www.twitter.com/robinson_crusoe
The Mad Men ones are fun though...

I've seen www.twitter.com/robinson_crusoe running too. A lead up or fan of the new NBC show Crusoe? Who knows, but it's fun!

The heads of the studios, like their counterparts in the music industry and other large corporations, fear what they don't understand. The music industry could be rolling in the money they would have made had they jumped on the Internet rather than attack it with lawsuits.
Oh well, you snooze you lose.

I think dismissing the downturn in the economy in the U.S. so easily is a HUGE mistake. Perhaps American Apparel's profits haven't dropped as much BECAUSE of their online efforts? AA is also way ahead of the curve and, to their credit, don't mind experimenting with unproven tactics such as their store in Second Life.
Social Networks are fickle and companies often fail, mostly because they don't get it or don't trust marketers who do get it. You can't talk to consumers the way you could just 3 years ago, that's even more apparent in social networks.

I often wondered what was up with Boston. Silicon Valley, now Austin? How is it that a city with the ridiculous amount of colleges that Boston has (Harvard, MIT, WIT, Northeastern, BU, Suffolk, etc.), one of the highest rates of education per capita hasn't become a tech mecca. After all Facebook, Naspter and Zip Car all got their start here. We did lose alot of people during the .Com crash of the 90s and it seems they never came back. Is it the high rent? Lack of parking? When is Boston going to become a force in online space? We even have our own Second Life office!

Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins I feel the same way about Dallas - and I think the answer is that a lot of folks either integrated to other industries or moved to stronger tech centers. I know after the dot-com bust in Dallas, a large portion of my circle moved to Austin, and many others stayed in Dallas but moved to other industries.

Twitter is exactly what Steven Hodson says it is, for Steven Hodson. The fact is that Twitter is an amazing communications tool. Blogs are communication, micro blogs are communication, status is communication. Some use Twitter to let their friends know they "love Kevin today", some use it to pass along live news, some use it to share industry information, some use it to communicate their opinions. Twitter is just a tool, a versatile communications tool that can be used in different ways by different people.

I agree with the consensus. The UI is terrible. One of my designers equated it with early 90's web design. I don't know if MySpace has heard of a site called Facebook. They have an excellent design, usability, easy to navigate. I've become a more prolific user of Facebook specifically for that reason. If MySpace wants to stay relevant they need to kick it up a notch.

As a former professional musician with label dealings, I can tell you that bands rarely make any money from CD sales. Most bands are given a lucrative looking contract up front, then the record company deducts the cost of recording studio time, the producer, your new web site (they won't let you run your own anymore), artwork for the CD, video production, artwork for merchandise, the cost of setting up a merchandising department, the cost of your new equipment, etc.
Mot bands only make money through t-shirt sales (if they've set up their own merchandising company like Dave Mathews did, or else they just get a cut after overhead is paid) and live ticket sales.

in 2008/06/19/contextual-advertising/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
Well, of course CNN didn't choose to put the ad there. It was a little bit of coincidence, but mostly an illustration of how dumb contextual ad programming is. The idea is that if it's an article about cars and gas mileage, an ad for a Hybrid vehicle shows, assuming that if the viewer is interested in cars and gas mileage you're catching them at just the right time with your car ad.
Of course that same ad is likely to show when the headline reads "Youth Steals Mothers Car After Lighting Her on Fire with Gasoline" and the content bears out the details.
Contextual ads are a great idea, unfortunately they are often poorly executed due to the limit of programming. You'd be better off knowing a human chose your ad to go along with the article. Of course, no one wants to have their ad shown in an article about severed feet.

in Why Microsoft will buy Facebook and keep it closed on Scobleizer
Facebook is an even better investment if you think of it's population less in terms of the amount of people on it compared to the rest of the web, and more in terms of the fact that it represents most of an entire generation of young americans, i.e. long term customers.
One of the problems they'll face is that Microsoft would want to keep out competitors from all fields. Imagine all of those Facebook users no longer being able to pull up the Facebook iPhone app or access their account on their iMac because Microsoft makes the site unusable for Safari.

in Adobe Chief Software Architect has an iPhone, says “ask Apple” about Flash on Scobleizer
I got sick of waiting for Apple and Adobe to sort out the Flash situation on iPhone, which, by the way, would be great for applications and games, so I decided to get Flash on my iPhone no matter what. See:
