It means a lot to me to hear this feedback from you. It was actually my first time moderating a panel. So, this makes me really happy. :)

Funny thing about the Twitter lists demo. When it was happening - it was unplanned and I had no idea until it actually happened - I was thinking about it and the following things kind of went through my mind: we're making good time, we can afford to do this. Not many people have access, so people will be interested, let's see where it goes. Hopefully not so long that I need to forcibly cut anyone off.

Thankfully, that's what happened. Robert gave a great demo and was a great panelist. Afterward, I really thought it was awesome that the Twitter Lists demo was sort of a side plot for the panel, an extra morsel, if you will. Because we delivered what we came to deliver: we covered all of our points in an appropriate amount of time and we had a good Q&A where we answered whatever people asked. I hope it delivered value overall.

Great post, Nathan. This is a really helpful one for people looking to speak.

I have one more tip to add: don't be afraid to be different (style wise). A couple of days before the conference, I decided I didn't want to look at Twitter during the panel. At all. I didn't want to read from it during our presentation, I didn't want to look at it during our presentation and I didn't want it to interrupt us.

There were a lot of panels where the Twitter discussion or the back channel or whatever was a big part of it and that's understandable. I would do it myself in the right setting, if I wanted (and did do it at Social Media Business Forum, a conference held shortly after BWE). I just felt it for this one.

My reasoning was that BWE has us there to speak to the people who are there. The best part of conferences to me is face to face networking. As such, I wanted to focus on delivering the presentation to the people we were looking in the eyes and on answering the questions of anyone who stepped to the mic and looked us in the eyes. If no one stepped to the mic, sure, we'd then open up Twitter. But, otherwise, I didn't want to.

So, I told Wayne this and he was cool with it. I told Amber and so was she. I wasn't sure how Robert would react, but he was gracious and agreed to it (he didn't even open his laptop during the panel!). I was so happy with the way we stuck to it. The only question asked from Twitter was one that another person actually came to the mic to ask, which was awesome (to me).

Twitter is amazing and we all love it, but I think that... for one panel... the idea of not looking at it was a good thing. So, don't feel like you have to do stuff just because everyone else is doing it or because you feel like you'd be scorned if you didn't do it for not being "transparent."

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks again,

Patrick

Re: Email Marketing and Online Marketing – Video Book Reviews

Awesome of you to review Brandon's book, Chris. It isn't attended by a ton of kids, but there are some and there are more than when I started going, which I think was like when I was 5ish or something. I've gone nearly every year since then, now being 21.

When your Dad, i.e. the person making the purchasing decisions for the company, is standing next to you - everyone is nice. But, then when I got old enough to walk around on my own a bit, I'd notice people giving me looks or treating me in a less than gracious manner. Even straight out rude at times. (Obviously not limited to conferences - people like this treat kids like this at brick and mortars, over the phone, ete. etc.). What I am getting at is this: what would I do when that happened? I'd report right back to my Mom and Dad and it would affect how all of us looked at the company or the person, which in turn, affected buying decisions. So, it's important to realize that family is important.

I realize, of course, that there are venues where it is appropriate for only the professional to go. Certainly. But, generally, I don't feel that expos (where you walk around and look at products) should be that way.

Re: Why I don’t write about video games

After reading your post about the LinuxWorld expo, etc., I was surprised to see you associate those comments with "14 year olds." That's probably the kind of thinking that came up with that sign at LinuxWorld. I had to deal with it myself when I was younger, trying to do business. Already a strike against you.

It's not 14 year olds, it's immature people. I manage 7 online communities and I've managed communities for around 6 years now. Some of my greatest staff members have been teenagers. And some of my greatest staff members have been people in their 30s and 40s. I've dealt with big time idiots that have been teenagers and that have been in their 30s and 40s. I think that older people are more inclined to tell me what rights I have when it comes to managing my own property. :) I had a partner at a law firm (he used his law firm e-mail to contact me and respond) leave a nasty comment on one of my blogs and then after it was deleted in accordance with our guidelines, he called me a "Nazi pig," and that was the nicer of two names. :)

But, my point is that it's not an age thing, just a maturity thing.

Re: How many still use Yellow Pages?

Yeah, I still use them. I have tried to get my blogs (not the one linked, mind you) into Google News before and have been rejected. On some levels, I can understand it, but in one particular one, I simply can't.

I have one blog where we cover a specific subject very comprehensively. I have built up a great number of contacts in and around the subject that I use to break news, confirm stories, etc. We do real journalism, in other words. I work hard at it and I am very proud of the site. It got rejected by Google News.

Now, I was OK with that, but what then annoyed me was that there is a blog in Google News that attempts to cover the same subject as us, except that they cover it much less frequently, in much less detail and they don't break any news at all. The blog isn't attached to a large organization or anything. So, I have no idea why this blog is listed in Google News, but we get rejected. They give me reasons, but the reasons would have prevented this other person, as well. So, it's frustrating.

I don't want to spam your comments with a link to what I wrote about it, so I'm going to drop you a quick e-mail.

Re: FastCompany.TV launches

Congrats on the launch.

Re: Why I haven’t posted for two weeks

Good luck to you!

Patrick

Re: Some more MySpace numbers

Thanks for the mention!

Re: 13 essential reads for community managers, as suggested by … you

Wow, thanks so much. But, when there are issues, they generally address them, which is a good thing. phpBB is so big that more people are trying to exploit it than any other community software, I would say. If other community softwares catch up in popularity, they may face increased scrutiny, as well.

But, there are certainly viable alternatives as you describe.

Anyway, thanks again for the mention.

Re: Joining CopyByte

Congrats Jonathan!

Re: The Audacity of Free

Great post Chris.
