I literally laughed out loud when I read "The dead leading the blind".

Microsoft certainly doesn't have the best track record in acquisitions (ie. Hotmail, Driveoff.com) and doesn't appear to be very in tune with what its users really want (ie. Vista, most of the MSN sites?).

On a positive note (since nobody else seems to be) there is potential for synergies from leveraging Yahoo! web services with Microsoft capabilities in desktop and at home media. (Apologies for Buzzword overkill).

Also, in case you forgot to celebrate, Vista celebrated its 1 year anniversary on Jan 30.

Are you still looking for panelists for this? I submitted some speaker proposals (haven't heard back) and would love to participate in your panel. I work for a company that helps Bloggers make money from their blogs.... so, while I wouldn't pimp my company (speakers who did that last year were among the worst) I can speak knowledgeably on the topic. I am speaking at Blogher and Blog Indiana....

Thanks for sharing this and for taking the time to create such a comprehensive video. It is pretty shocking that a large company like Photobucket wouldn't have thought about the potential issues (not to mention the fact that some of the images appeared to be copyright). I'm going to post your video over on the Photrade blog.

Also - thanks for mentioning photrade. We are trying to create a site that respects the wishes of the photographers to keep their photos safe.

We got literally hundreds of emails about this yesterday (and hundreds today), and the option was to either provide a standard message and respond quickly or answer each email individually, in which case we would not have responded to everyone until next week. Given the seriousness of the issue, we felt that it was appropriate to provide a quick response that explained the issue. If an email was a part of the database issue (which yours was) we sent the same standard response.

We usually do provide individual email responses, however due to time constraints this just wasn't possible. We are experiencing some growing pains right now and are working to scale things like customer service, as we know how important it is.

I'm sorry that you were disappointed with our level of service, and hopefully in the future we can better meet your expectations.

I think that the real question is will Microsoft be able to realize the potential from the acquisition without alienating the user base.

There is a lot of potential but the track record isn't good. Only time will tell......

Hi - I love the photos on your site.

Check out our site www.photrade.com - it is a photosharing site made specifically for bloggers and photographers (and you appear to be both).

You can actually SELL your photos on this site PLUS you can earn ad revenue when people view your photos. Its also a great way to get your work out there - our library of photos is expanding every day. Check it out.

My Fav is the photrade badge - you can get one to show a collage of your photos when you upload photos.

I would love to know what you think about the site. Our goal is to make something better for the blogging community!

Per Timsdd's comment (btw - Timsdd has tons of great photos on the site), you should be able to use images without an invite, however you need an invite to post your photos.

You can request an invite on the site - click create account (top right) and you'll get on the list for an invite.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a well thought out post on the subject.

What I find interesting about this discussion (and the discussion over at Flickr) are those who say "don't put it online if you don't want it stolen". Do people tell musicians and bands not to create MP3s if they don't want their work stolen? Do people tell the movie houses that piracy is something that should be expected and tolerated because people CAN steal? I find it interesting that the artists (photographers) are attacked versus those stealing their work.

The internet has clearly created issues for all types of artists wishing to share their work online.

This posts brings much needed attention to some of the issues that photographers face online - Great Post!

I could not agree with you more. I work for a photo website (www.photrade.com) and we discovered this need and have been working to build a site to help photographers share, protect and make money from their photos. We are working on creating innovative technologies that will help keep your photos safe. To date we have launched custom watermarking (automatic - you set the watermark up once) and we disable right-clicking (you get a blank image). We will be releasing an entire protection suite over the next few months - this is only the first step.

We believe that you should be able to share your photos on your terms, so we also allow you to sell digital rights and prints of your image. Our goal is to give image users a simple solution to purchase images and generate awareness around image theft.

We are currently in a closed beta - if any of you are interested in checking us out send me an email (krista at photrade dot com) and I would be happy to send you an invite for our site.

We would love to hear your feedback on how we can create a photo site that would really meet your needs.
